    As CFI, when a student is ready, he's ready :)
    Safety and proficiency is the one uniform standard, not perfection.
    No rush, no pressure to yield that solo, and its earned sense of accomplish due to hard and smart work and study.
    ...rather, a standard to meet that determines one is ready, or not.
    Plus, that guy flying his first and subsequent solos is essentially flying on my license when I sign
    ...so, you bet he's ready ...safe and proficient :)

My instructor didn't teach DMMS and Vref the same way you do, but did give me safety speeds of 80 knots on base, and stay above 70 knots until on final, and then 65 over the numbers. After seeing your placarded airpspeed indicator, I was certainly safely above those numbers. I like your way of teaching it. Great job to they guys for getting in their first solo ever!!!! My grandfather was able to teach and solo his eldest son in 8 hours!
    Times were a little different back then. My grandfather had a new Great Lakes biplane and a commercial license at the time.
    They started early in the morning. My grandfather would kick hard on the rudder pedals from the back seat and let my uncle correct from the front seat.
    They practiced takeoffs and landings and were covering spins and stalls before the end of the day.

    On the other end
    ...absolutely bizarrely inept licensed would-be renters,
    even w Commercial and Instrument ratings, that would have killed me, if I didn't command "my controls"
    ...to prevent a cross controlled stall on base to final under 400 feet AGL,
    ...drifting from downwind into the final approach - head on into a jet, while zoning out alerts from tower,
    and more fun :)

    …. hmmm … not sure about this one:
    CFR 61.87 (n) Limitations on student pilots operating an aircraft in solo flight.
    A student pilot may not operate an aircraft in solo flight unless that student pilot has received an endorsement in the student's logbook for the specific make and model aircraft to be flown by an authorized instructor *who gave the training* within the 90 days preceding the date of the flight.
    An *endorsement* is a *legal attestation* of actions taken. Either the endorsing CFI adhered to the requisite actions, or he didn’t.
    The term “as judged by an authorized instructor” imparts considerable responsibility on the instructor to accurately evaluate performance and comport of students throughout the curriculum. As example, let’s say an original instructor “left for greener pastures”, and is no longer available. Even there, the succeeding instructor would rightfully administer an additional 1-3 hours of instruction. A “ sit-down-suit-up-and-fly-off” scenario is wholly inadequate.
    Be careful on this one. An NTSB ALJ would have a “field day” with this.

      @@easttexan2933 … the issue is not whether an individual will be “OK”, but if adherence to CFRs is in effect. This happens all the time, from the fledgling Student pilot, to the grizzled B-777 Captain. That everyone is being watched and evaluated on a regular basis is the name of the aviation “game.”
      In summary, my ultimate concern was this:
      =======
      14 CFR Part 61 Section 87 (61.87) - Solo requirements for student pilots.
      (p) Limitations on flight instructors authorizing solo flight. No instructor may authorize a student pilot to perform a solo flight unless that instructor has -
      (1) Given that student pilot training in the make and model of aircraft or a similar make and model of aircraft in which the solo flight is to be flown;
      (2) Determined the student pilot is *proficient in the maneuvers and procedures prescribed in this section;*
      =======
      To me, the requirements stipulated by *CFR 61.87 (d) Maneuvers and procedures for pre-solo flight training in a single-engine airplane* - did not seem like an attainable goal, given such a short period of time of observation and evaluation.
      … that’s all I’m saying - no more, no less.

    • @flitetym
      @flitetym Před rokem

      @@easttexan2933 clearly there is a misinterpretation or misapplication of the regs, here.
      CFR 61.87 (p) - “No instructor may authorize a student pilot to perform a solo flight unless *that* instructor has - (1) Given *that* student pilot training … in the maneuvers and procedures prescribed in *this* section”
      The *only* legal way to determine and affirm if the elements of CFR 61.87 have been effected is by *entries in a logbook.*” “Word of mouth” doesn’t cut it.
      Multiple instructors may be employed, however this does not relieve the Solo Instructor of the responsibility to *affirm and audit* the student’s logbook for the presence of the *complement of endorsements specified in CFR 61.87* at the time of solo.
      I have been presenting this fact of strict adherence to CFRs and “safety assurance” throughout this exchange. Don’t dismiss the necessity for a “pre-solo audit” of the students’ records (logbook), his aeronautical knowledge (61.87b), and his demonstrated abilities.
      I certainly hope the Instructors out there read and digest this exchange.

      Sam, I have always been in the same boat as you. I can pretty much tell if the airspeed is correct by feel, sound, attitude, etc. But when I first learned about DMMS/AQP-GA, I immediately saw the wisdom in it. I started teaching it and using it as well. I recognized the value of these procedures. I’ve been a CFI and professional pilot for 40+ yrs. I got to fly pre and post AQP at my company. One dramatic change for GA is the use of NC headsets. Great stuff, but the downside is loss of one huge input that directly relates to airspeed control… the sounds made by the airplane . Slipstream noise, engine noise, you name it. These are all important parts of the feel of an airplane that pilots don’t experience as well as in the old days of hearing destruction, lol. So put that simple piece of tape on your AS indicator and discover what you’ve been missing. I think you’ll be surprised! I was.
