I'm interested in how your daughter will be using Khan Academy for middle school science this year. Did you pull from all 3 courses to create your own? Is there a reason you chose to not have her work strictly in one of the middle school sciences?
I tried to take a very laid-back and child-led approach for her this year because 1) she’s NOT a fan of science in general, and 2) I’m now working part time and need to delegate a bit. Basically I created a class that includes all three courses. I set a mastery goal for Biology for her (because we studied biology all last year, I figured it’d be mostly review) and let her work 30 minutes per day at her own pace until she mastered the material. Doing it this way was far less work for me than assigning certain topics and things individually. She just “mastered” Biology and feels pretty proud of herself!
I used to teach Math in public school and love the upper school program for MUS. My son has done pre-algebra and algebra. It is absolutely a college prep curriculum. We have used the videos with MUS. My son is very good at math and hated the samples for AOPS because he doesn’t want to know the “why” - I loved it as a kid, but it was not a good fit for him. Also check out Mr D Math. We spent a semester doing Saxon Math and hated it!
I’d love to hear more! I’m tempted to stay with what we know. I can’t remember now where I heard that the rigor just wasn’t there. I have the Prealgebra teacher book in storage, so I’ll be looking that over again soon too. There is also the independent aspect of it too. Short answer: I don’t know what I’m doing any more than the next homeschooling mom 😅
@@RegularSecularMama I’ve heard the same and I just don’t see it! I’ve also read so many stories of families using MUS through Calculus and going on to successful college math experiences! Here’s my take…I think people don’t think the rigor is there with MUS because they don’t jam so many words or problems on a page (each problem set is only 20 problems), or maybe they think the use of manipulatives means it’s less rigorous at that level 🤷♀️ Honestly, I think Saxon became so popular in the homeschool community because so many homeschoolers felt like they had to prove they were “doing enough” and thought that if they made their students do all of the Saxon problems they were “doing enough”!
Oh my goodness, those Saxon worksheets were such a huge turn off! I can see that having an influence on people’s opinions for sure. Interesting. I have the Prealgebra book in storage, I’ll have to dig it out and more closely compare the topics covered 🤔
Absolutely! I plan to do a review soon. Short version is it’s super thorough and the rigor is there for a kid who enjoys science and/or a challenge. It’s quite a lot of moving parts, which is something to consider based on your time and interest.
