      I have a weller brand soldering gun that goes to 250 watts I use it to solder 10-4 gauge copper works really well the tip turns bright orange when it's fully heated up

    • @dannichols6261
      @dannichols6261 Před 5 lety

      @@mrmeiii , yes, he did, but I suspect it's the difference between a soldering GUN and a soldering IRON. Your 250 watt GUN undoubtedly works, but as you can verify, the tip is relatively small in comparison with the IRON he used. The IRON has so much more thermal mass that the heat is sort of 'stored' in that mass & replenished from the (smaller) 100 watt heating element within it, and thus works to solder big wires which tend to absorb the heat & can tend to draw the applied heat away as they're soldered. Your 250 watt gun has to run 'more' (eats more current) to provide the same transfer of heat to the wires you're soldering, I'm guessing. Does that make sense? (Of course, the iron has to be heated for some length of time to get up to a usable heat, whereas you can turn your gun on & off as you need to use it.)

    You have some really cool videos that are inspiring.
    A really knowledgable fellow regarding capacitors is Robert Murray-Smith. You will not leave his channel without having learned something, a very inventive and inclusive CZcamsr. He developed a liquid graphite paint/print on gel which offers 4 farads per centimeter square for building capacitors. These Graphite Super Capacitors, besides functioning like a normal capacitor, will store 3 or 4 times more energy, so they have battery qualities.
    Another novel capacitor includes plexiglass 30cmx30cm, coated with melibdenum film, having a central hole through which, perpendicular to the plane of the plexiglass, is mounted a coil 4cm x 30cm. This presented by Don Smith at Tesla Symposium is said to gather ambient energy. Mr. Smith was the Head engineer for a large American Space company. Not big on details but does like to get your appetite going.
    Keep on producing awesome videos.

    • @hunter00047
      @hunter00047 Před 7 lety

      Depends if it's a good joint or not but a poor 1 ohm soldering/cracked joint as little as 10 amps @ 12v 120Watts equal to a soldering iron, many factors come into play mainly the resistance of the joint. Crimping and soldering is best you will never find a soldered car battery.

      @phizicks Před 7 lety +3

      Just remember cranking an engine is anywhere around 500AMPs+ (just look at your cranking amp capacity of your battery). A loose cable will arc and get super hot if you keep trying to crank a car that's failing due to bad current transfer. I've burnt my hand on just a loose clamp on a terminal once and it was smoking very lightly before I grabbed it. this will soften any soldering and with weight on the cable, may pull it out

      smoke one suspects...not to mention a lot of modern cars run smart chargers- you need a board that mimics the charge cycle of the lead acid it is to replace and feeds that to the capacitors?
      , you are also going to be charging at 14.3v from an alternator and if uncontrolled that load will increase exponentially in amperage your car will also be pulling amps to run its auxilliarys...radio on loud, air con on, headlights and interior lights and seat warmers and electric windows eyce tc- you would need to overmatch the alternator to all that, 200 amps?
      i dunno...
      however the whole benefit of this system is that it should in theory recharge almost instantly.hopefully that happens very quickly before the alternator gets too hot...

  • @thehobe9
    @thehobe9 Před 5 lety +1

    I am concerned about the gauge of the wire used to attach the balancing circuit. The charging current in the 5A vicinity could cause significant voltage drop when balancing occurs and potentially cause a imbalance to overcharge one of the capacitors above it's 2.7V rating. This could be a disastrous problem after many cycles of charge/discharge, when each capacitor voltage will be different due to differences in the actual capacitance value of each capacitor. The wiring may burn up when 5A is applied overtime as well.

      I'd rather refer to an electrical engineer when it comes to electrical unions inside a moving, vibrating automobile. Turns out soldering the wire to the crimp on lug provides the strongest union you can do benchmade, whilst forged lead lugs directly onto the wire is slightly stronger - that in effect solders the wire to the lug as well. BTW if you wish to try it, I'm sure you'll find what the engineers did - you can do so without that mondo soldering iron. (Use an oxyacetaline torch like you'd use to solder copper pipe.)

      2.7v x 6 = 16.2v

      6 Super Capacitors should be able to safely handle the car alternator turning on, after a car turns over, if this battery is to be used in 12v automotive applications.

    Could you not add a 7th cap and eliminate the PCB protection? 2.7x7=18.9V(in the case of 2.5V 2.5x7=17.5V)that should get you safely past max voltage alternator could output. It might take up a little more space but far simple and easier to troubleshoot.

    • @Schematix
      @Schematix  Před 4 lety

      Great question. The PCB that provides basic protection won't actually prevent overcharging from an alternator. The amount of current an alternator can output is many times greater than what the circuit protection can handle. For sure you could add a 7th capacitor but, there is a drawback. When capacitors are wired in series, the total capacitance is divided by the number of caps. In my build, each cap is 2600F & there are 6 of them. So the equation would look like this: 2600/6 = 433F of capacitance. If you added a 7th cell: 2600/7 = 371F of capacitance. In summary, the more cells you have in series, the total amount of power storage diminishes.

    Don't solder the ends on battery wires. A good crimp will hold up better. All OEMs crimp. Solder causes the wire to become brittle. At the point between brittle and flexible, you can get metal fatigue.
    If you don't have a large crimp tool (they're quite expensive), some table vices have the ability to crimp. Or you can buy a fixture that will fit a vice.

    • @Schematix
      @Schematix  Před 7 lety

      Absolutely correct. However, because these wires aren't moving or bending metal fatigue isn't a concern of mine. The vice trick works great. At a pinch, a hammer and punch tool can suffice. :)

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 Před 6 lety

      If you are in the US, you can just go to your local Harbor Freight and pick up a crimper. The 8 tons of force hydraulic ones are under $60 and can handle anything from # 14 wire up to #0 wire. When done, my #4 cables then had a sleeve of black heat shrink tube and red electrical tape on the positive leads and just heat shrink tube on the negative ( couldn't find the right size red at the time ).

    The heatsinks should go on the resistors, not the chips. The resistors burn off the excess energy, the chips are just control and do not give off much heat

      Incorrect. The semiconductors get extremely hot under load. I have performed tests using a temp sensor.etc

    Hi all?
    I don't think I can afford to make this beast, but did see a 6x500F on eBay for £35.
    I need to use it as a leisure battery to power lights & charge phone, tablet, cycle lights...
    I only do short trips in the van, so need something that'll charge fast, where as the leisure battery I have takes many hours to charge :-(
    So if I bought THREE 6x500F's
    1/ would it be a good compromise?
    2/ how would I charge them (using van only) or with what?
    3/ how quickly could I charge them (I'm hoping only 15 to 30 minutes)
    Helpful info needed
    Thanks
    Mike in the UK

      6x500F cap's in series will be able to store around 2.5watthours of power storage. For context, a typical phone battery has around 10 watthours. Charge time would be a few seconds. But you'd have to limit the charge current if you're charging from a car plug. Otherwise, you'd blow the fuse every time. In a nutshell, 6x500F caps won't provide anywhere near the power storage you'd require. The real solution for your application would be a LIPO battery pack. A quality lipo can be charged very quickly (depends on the capacity & charger used) within the time frame you specified. Plus you could have a couple batteries. So one's charging while you use the other. Hope this helps

    these ultra caps are not made ideally to be used without a battery! if you have a high power consuming system its best to have a good battery as well, best types are LTO batts, or LifePO4 batts, along with super caps and a good alternator of course!, these caps dont have the much needed power reserve that regular batteries do like an AGM battery

    Ok kids I have twelve of these caps in my car for the last 8 years. I have no circuit board and I have a charger in my trunk just in case. Do not try and jump start your caps from another car , you will blow up their battery and alternator especially from 0 volts. Possibly the cars computer too . 8 to 9 volts and you will take months of life from the other cars battery! Possibly blow up the alternator. I know i fried two of my wife’s batteries! If you want to build a charger just use a 600 watt HPS BALLAST transformer with the secondary coil chopped out. Use about 14 to 16 turns of the heaviest gauge wire you can fit and a single 400 amp diode will do. I use a 1000 watt HPS BALLAST and a 400 amp bridge rectifier and it’s overkill . Mine Chargers from 0 volts in about 30 to 40 seconds at 150 amps. Once you reach 14.4 volts the current tapers off. Get yourself a 12 volt solar panel and wire it straight to the caps for many days of not driving the car. DO NOT START YOUR CAR WITH THE PANNLE STILL HOOKED UP ! Your caps will drops about a volt a day and under 10 volts and you will not be able to start your car. Umm what else I can tell you. Oh NEVER, I SAY NEVER TRY TY USE A CHARGER DIRECTLY TO THE CAPS WITH THE CAR IS STILL CONNECTED!!! Disconnect your caps from the car and charge your caps. Then connect your caps to your car. 150 amps across your computer will definitely fuck your car up !! Use a meter in your cigarette lighter to monitor voltage. My twelve caps cost me 200 bucks back in the day now I just buy one every Friday and I’m at ten caps for the old ladies car. Do EXACTLY what I say. Trust me and if you blow your shit up it’s not my fault! You just don’t understand electronics. DO ALL CHARGING EXPERIMENTS OUTSIDE OF YOUR CAR FIRST!! YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE NOTHING OVERHEATS OR BLOWS UP BEFORE YOU USE IT IN YOUR CAR! Make sure you use a volt meter. Anyway good luck.

    why are all the large cap's always low voltage? is there some intrinsic rule in electronics i just don't know about in capacitance. and you should check out Julian Ilett's video on his smaller super cap's and his explanation on the control board and a cool mod on it czcams.com/video/trEnwNaEgJ0/video.html

      Our current technology only allows us the choice of low voltage high capacity, or high voltage low capacity. Unless you want to use a refrigerator sized capacitor.
      Hopefully with carbon nano-tube tech., we can make a high voltage high capacitance capacitors that are small and lightweight.

    how many people, wired in series, can you kill with that thing? the DOD might want to hire you...

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před 7 lety

      You can't kill people electrically with the thing, you can however burn them alive if it vents with flame.
      While the capacitor is happy to supply a lethal amount of current, its voltage is going to be limited to less than 14V. The resistance of human body will act as current limiter and limit the current to a safe amount. Injury will be averted. And the more people you connect in series, the higher the resistance and lower the current. A single person with very sweaty hands might just about feel the tiniest bit of something very subtly, but multiple will not.

    those lugs are horrible...the crimp ones are worse. you want whats called a split bolt lug. i have 8000 watt electric furnaces that run at 2600 F...and to power the elements i have to use split bolt lugs,,,,anything else just goes to crap really fast. dont waste money , time ,,and risk a fire. dont use crimp on lugs.
