- Swami Sarvapriyananda teaches Verses 13-16 from the Seventh chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. This series of talks unfolds the highest truths of Vedanta through the study of "The song of God".
🔆Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 7, Verse 13:
त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभि: सर्वमिदं जगत् |
मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्य: परमव्ययम् || 13||
tribhir guṇa-mayair bhāvair ebhiḥ sarvam idaṁ jagat
mohitaṁ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ param avyayam
🔴 Deluded by the mental states accruing from the three Gunas of Prakrti, this world knows not Me, the Imperishable, transcending these Gunas.
🔆Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 7, Verse 14:
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया |
मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते || 14||
daivī hyeṣhā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā
mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te
🔴 My divine Maya (power) constituted of the three Gunas is difficult to overcome. Whoever takes refuge in Me alone, in utter devotion, overcomes it.
🔆Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 7, Verse 15:
न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढा: प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमा: |
माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावमाश्रिता: || 15||
na māṁ duṣhkṛitino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ
māyayāpahṛita-jñānā āsuraṁ bhāvam āśhritāḥ
🔴 The lowest type of men, evil, foolish and demonic in nature, being deprived of right understanding by Maya, never take refuge in Me with devotion.
🔆Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 7, Verse 16:
चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जना: सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन |
आर्तो जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ || 16||
chatur-vidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ sukṛitino ’rjuna
ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī cha bharatarṣhabha
🔴 O Arjuna, the greatest of the Bharata race!Four kinds of pious men adore Me. They are the distressed one, the Knowledge-seeker, the wealth-seeker, and the knower.

And I think I learned more about my deluded self in the first 10 seconds of this talk than I remember learning in a long time! Those first 10 seconds showed me a personalized version of ‘the snake in the rope’ - if not in the ultimate sense, then in the psychological and perceptual-error sense. I think Swami Sarvapriyanandaji mentioned that the sound in the beginning is a static sound from the microphone in the shawl, and yet, no matter how many times I listen to it (with headphones on), I cannot hear anything other than a garbled, but most-familiar voice - even as I tell myself it is just the sound of fabric on the microphone. I am guessing voice recognition must be one of the most primal attachments of the body-mind complex. Each time I listen to it and tell myself, ‘it is the sound of static,’ my mind still automatically tries to decipher words being said in some garbled message, as it recognizes the timbre of the ‘voice’ so strongly and immediately. Sorry for going on about it; it is just interesting to me. I am trying to decouple the association, but I have not been able to yet. It is an auditory illusion for me. Perhaps it is the same on the jnana path when the knowledge has been acquired but not assimilated and integrated, and one must just keep confirming the acquired knowledge in one’s mind, but it is still not settled or experienced as reality. That, and then this tiny, little auditory illusion is so strong-held and persistent even as I know it is an illusion!
