Sloping ceilings - will your Smoke Alarms work?

So I have searched for this information for days and yours is the first video to have the answer to my question. I don't quite understand the answer though. Further than 500 down... 500 what? mm? That would be about a foot and a half. Is that right, or 500 something else?
