My thoughts on the 96- 98 Mustang Cobra

  • This video was requested by a carfeens 18. The 96-98 Cobra is a very special car and it's a shame that it doesn't get the respect that it should. By today's standards the power output is fairly mundane, but with very few mods can be made to be rather impressive. This car set the stage for the modern coyote platform as well as the voodoo platform. They do everything well Andrew Moore the owner with very few maintenance issues. There's a part of me that wishes I would have bought one a long time ago, chances are if I did I would still own it.

    I’ve watched this video so many times since it came out! I’m slowly restoring my 97 Crystal White coupe that’s been in my family since 01. My dad was the 2nd owner and gave it to me when I graduated college and he bought it back from me a year later and then he gave it to my brother in 2015 and he ran it into the ground and when I asked him about it in 2020 he said he had a Corolla and it had been sitting for a year and I could just take it. I flew to Nashville to get it and it was covered in dirt/moss/cobwebs and the paint had peeled everywhere and had surface rust on the roof but I was able to get it started and drove it back to MN on 4 mix-matched dry rotted tires no problem. The only speed parts are from the original owner; 3.73 gears and short shifter. I started a channel documenting the progress and most of what I’ve done has been maintenance. The only “fun stuff” I’ve done is install a stronger clutch, aluminum flywheel, lowered 1.5”, and added deep dish Terminator reps with 315 rears. It’s always fun at car meets because I’m almost always the only one with an SN95 in general and I’m definitely the only with an SN95 Cobra. Currently saving for an On3 turbo kit. I’m having a blast!

    96-98 cobras were mid to high 13 sec cars in stock form. Gears and drag radials did help a lot. But I agree with your points about how that platform jumpstarted the mod motor craze. Another underrated 4v 4.6 was the one in the 03/04 mach 1s. Curious to hear your thoughts on those cars. They were giving the LS1 GTOs and fbodies a good run back in the day!

      @WILLIAM CLYNES this is very false. The cobra revs to 7k and has no low end at all. They really need gears badly. With 456 gears and stock height tires itll still do around 120 mph at the top of 4th gear beleive it or not. 4.10 you can do closer to around 130. If you're na its a no brainer only way i wouldn't recommend real steep gears in a cobra is if youre built force induction making big power...even if youre running a blower with stock motor above 400 rwhp id recommend 4.10 all day long. I had 4.10 in my old 97 cobra and thought it would be too low but afterwards i regretted not going 4.56. Driveability was perfectly fine.

      @@michaelharris748 im SICK of hearing morons spew dumb shit like "iT dOeSnT hAvE lOw EnD tOrQuE". it makes 90% of its torque peak from 2000-4000rpm and peaks between 4000-4500rpm.
      the rear why it feels like it "doesnt have low end" is A: it has 3.27 gears stock and B: it hold power VERY well past peak hp.
      this is the reason it benefits so well from 4.10+ gears. ill add that if you have a Centri, 4.10s are still recommended. the PD blower for this car doesnt come with an IC and adding one is a PITA but people still regularly run 4.10s with it as well, though personally i think 3.73s are better since it acts more like a big block engine at that point.

    I have a 96 Cobra, what is said is true. For a cost to performance ratio, it's hard to beat. The 4.6 DOHC Romeo engine is tough as nails with the stock rods and pistons being the limiting factor as the crank is already forged. The stock bottom end is good to 500hp, more than that and you'll need rods and pistons, which are readily available. With 3.73 gears, open exhaust through flow masters, staggered 17" rims and tires, cold air intake, this car is a jack of all trades. Not to mention my vivid memories of the Tommy Kendall/Trans Am days! And how many folks can say their motor was hand built and signed by two SVT techs! Prices are coming down, so try to get one that isn't hammered on. I have 130K miles on mine, a/c blows cold, it's plenty fast for cruising, the aftermarket is HUGE, and it sounds amazing!

I babied that car and regret selling it to this day. When I retired about five years ago and started looking for a classic muscle car in excellent condition I soon found out that that the few I found were priced way beyond my budget. I came across a one owner unmolested ' 97 Cobra and bought it. Pacific Green / Saddle Leather. I've only added a cold air intake,cat back exhaust and had the car tuned at a Mustang performance shop. Car has 121,000 miles now. I've really enjoyed probably one of the least popular models of Mustangs Ford ever made.

    I had a 1998 Cobra convertible, yellow with black interior, great car. Eventually the 96 Cobra will find its place in history. The 1996 Cobra really marked the point in time when Ford, really got back into street/racing specialty vehicles. Yes, you had the 5.0 mustangs from before and even the 93 Cobra, but those were pedestrian cars with a 1960's designed 302. Even the 93 Cobra was nothing more than a Mustang GT with a bunch of parts thrown in from the Ford Motorsports part book. The 96 Cobra is as significant as the 1969 Boss 429. This was the point in time where Ford went back heavily into performance, with a hand built DOHC V8 that was the envy of everyone. I would have said it was as significant as the 427 SOHC engine, but that engine never made it a production car.

    Many enthusiasts are after those Teksid aluminum blocks found in the 96-98 Cobra and Linkoln Mark VIII. They were basically manufactured by Ferrari and could handle huge power when built properly. They are still known as one of the toughest blocks ever in a mustang. I love em all....i personally will not judge a car simply by how fast they are. All year mustangs and Cobras have their pros añd cons. The 94- 95 s are cool for they came with the tried and true 302 of the golden 5.0 era yet came wirh the improved rigid structure newer body style with a wider track and new style, better handling that with only two year?s of availability will always be an icon of the mustang world, hell its the last year for the famed roller motored street ruler of a decades length. love it for what is is, not what i aint or dont got as per other ponys

With the 456s these things are nasty i highly recommend 456 to any 96-98 cobra that is NA. theyll still do close to 120 at the top of 4th with stock height tires. I told myself if i ever get another one 456 is one of the first things im gonna do along with drag radials that REALLY wakes these cars up.

    You made a ton of great points but the 96-98 cobras stock are in the high 13s/low 14s area in the quarter mile. They do not do 12s stock...they just don’t. And I’m a mustang guy.
    Now I have heard about a dozen or more stories from people who either had a 96-98 cobra or had a friend who had one say that with just an intake, mufflers and gears that they go 13.2 all day long which goes into your great point about the easy tunability of these cars without having to crack open the motor. Throw in some wider rear wheels and high end rubber and you are in the 12s BUT that’s far from stock though.

    • @michaelharris748
      @michaelharris748 Před 4 lety +1

    • @michaelharris748
      @michaelharris748 Před 4 lety +2

      They can make around 450 rwhp reliably with a good tune and supporting mods and all you need to make big power reliably is forged rods and pistons which costs about 1300-1400 bucks. The stock crank is already forged and the teksid block in them is prob the strongest block ford ever made. Yea it dont make as much reliable power as a 5.4 shelby engine but the engine costs 1/3 or less what the shelby engine costs so dollar for dollar these engines are better bang for the buck and theyre alot lighter being aluminum block (unless you get an 11 up shelby engine which costs even more) as for the cars themselves one of these can be had for a fraction what a gt500 costs. Kinda dumb to compare them honestly.
