    I would like to find just one reviewer who runs these tests on the boring stuff that most people do most of the time. We are not all content creators. How about running a mix of Office applications such as importing and manipulating large data sets in Excel, and say browsing and keeping 20 tabs open, and see how long the two last against each other? Everybreviewer want to show us Lightroom and Games, and I don’t do either. I’d just like a windows machine that performs well vs an Air in these mundane daily work tasks.

      @@Quicksilver-7791 yes fair enough point. These things are not hard for any pc to do although large data sets can slow one down if its RAM is insufficient. My point really boils down to whether these ARM machines are going to be true all day devices. No lugging the charger to work. Something I don’t need with my Mac M2.

    Your comment about battery is misleading. Apple purposely shows little battery drain at the beginning (ex: the 1% battery drain from 100% to 99%) but drains battery much faster later on to give the illusion of a better battery life. The surface shows a more equal battery drain, which is why you may think it performs worse on battery. In order to test these both equally, you must drain them to 0%.

    • @InconsisTenZ
      @InconsisTenZ Před 16 dny +1

      But that's just checking one percent of battery. For a real test you need to compare the TDP(total power draw) of the laptops for a specific workload. The Snapdragon X Elite doesn't even come close to the efficiency of Macbook Air M1 let alone the M3. So yeah windows laptops have a long way ahead to give similar performance at similar efficiency.

    Been running the Lenovo Slim 7x for 5 days now, no regrets. It's a pleasure, gorgeous HDR OLED screen, lightweight and no fan noise with minimal heat. Basically checks all the boxes I care about.
    Supports all my dev workload applications (.NET/Node/Python/Docker).
    For gaming I just use Moonlight, I've owned 7 ultrabooks, 0 of them for gaming. Never made sense to try to game on an ultrabook because you then make sacrifices to height, weight and battery life, then what's the point.
    I've probably got 4-5 applications that are non native, but all run fine under emulation.

    I just bought a M3 MBA 15" and it's my first Mac, I would've loved to have waited to get a X-Elite surface laptop but I'm not keen on the early adoption problems that come with first generation devices, and for the same price I could have gotten a 16GB/512GB X-Elite, instead of my 8GB/512GB MBA which I wouldn't mind... that and the amount of paid software you need to have a good experience on Macs is insane, I still might get a X-Elite Surface just for something to play with sometimes, although its GPU performance gives me second thoughts, not that I do GPU intensive tasks but it's unusual for them to match and exceed apple silicon but be so far behind in the GPU, I've not doubt the next iteration will be better, but with apples event coming up and the M4 coming to the MBP and maybe even M4 PRO/MAX/ULTRA I think the X-Elites extra performance in multi-score is about to be taken, I get a feeling snapdragon will always be behind Apple.

So, when you see Windows laptops losing battery fast, it's because their battery percentage decreases at a steady rate. But on a MacBook, it's like super slow at first and then speeds up later. Given your stated needs I'd say get the MBA M3 8/256 config which is on sale at BB for $849. I lean Windows cuz have some app needs but I think you'd be hard pressed to do better for your needs at that price for a M3 MBA.

I came to notice influencers even when criticizing Apple stay on the positive side and when criticizing Ms, much more unforgiving when the latter has a much more complex OS that has to target a lot of users and apps. Apple is tasked with maintaining one OS and 1 type of machine for it. This is a big step for MS, and they have to get all manufacturers and devs on board equally. We should not pick sides when it comes to corpotates. The qualcomm dev kit hasnt even released yet, and hobestly they should have delayed these machines.

    I wonder how responsive Windows on ARM is compared to a low-powered AMD or Intel system. Because with multiple high-res external monitors and many programs open, Windows 11 gets less and less responsive over time: you see some delays when opening file explorer windows, or even when navigating between windows using the task view (Win + Tab). This behavior might be different on ARM systems depending on how well Windows is optimized for ARM.

    The Surface will use more battery when using software that isn't optimized for the surface. which is basically every app you tested here in your video. When the apps are fully optimized the performance will be better across the board. I believe it was basically mentioned by app developers like adobe that they are working on arm base versions. So these early test are not true evaluations of these devices. But aye i guess you have to put something out. I have the surface pro 11 and no there isn't anything holding me back. It's strange that the usual rules do not apply for Macs versus Snapdragon Windows. Macbooks will be better at gaming and have more native apps. It is close in performance in CPU apps, though, depending on your pro-app usage. However, efficiency on intensive tasks is significantly better on Macs, and on casual PC use, they are close. The GPU is subpar, but hopefully, drivers will close the enormous gap.
    But then, if you factor in that, we could get an MB Pro 14 M3 Pro for around $300 more than the Surface Laptop ARM, which not only easily beats the Surface on most performance tasks but also is a better laptop (speakers, miniLED, ports, etc) with no downsides now for compatibility, you have to ask yourself why you would choose the Surface Laptop other than a bias for Windows even if it is not nearly as good? The natural monopoly of Windows due to Stockholm Syndrom-like consumer and business mindset really surprises me.
    It is rough to judge the X Elite on Gen 1 as it is clearly lacking in too many regards. Gen 2 will be the make-or-break, assuming the M4, Intel, and AMD do not stretch too far clear in the coming months.

    • @TamasKiss-yk4st
      @TamasKiss-yk4st Před měsícem +1

      And even the $300 extra on Mac is not a wasted money, since you get yearly free major OS updates (which cost extra money on Windows, because that is a new named version..), also the Mac keep the price better, so when you buy a new one later, you get back more (just check the 4 years old M1 price, it's still 70% of the original price, so you can sell your old Mac on about 60% price, which means you only spent $400 on the $999 M1 Macbook at the end in the past 4 years..)

    The launch seems to be rushed. M1 launch was much better executed in typical Apple style, M1, while older, was a lot more up-to-date cosnidering the time and the competition. The CPU on the SD X is basically top tier while the GPU is so further behind that it is actually worse than their SD 8 series. the SD 8 has things like RT while the SD X doesn't even have that. The GPU performance is very similar to M1/M2 GPUs which is not great considering the age. M3 offers much better GPU performance while being very close in CPU performance. M4 has similar CPU performance and much, much better GPU performance than the SD X.
    Edit: There are sources that claim hadrware-accelerated RT exists on the SD X Elite SoC. So the explanation to why it performs poorly might be because they used an older version of their ray tracing GPUs from the SD 8 series.
