There is so much in this Rich Little appearance that illustrates the greatness of Carson's Tonight Show and of Carson himself as host. He is far and away the best person ever to do this type of thing. He is very knowing and sophisticated and assured and charming, but still has the energy and fun of the wise cracking kid at the back of the class in high school. I don't know if we produce this type of person any more, or if we let them get to the top.
ironpyrites: they'd be fined, arrested in Californication for showing GOD-given talent; Communism duzn't reward individual-ism unless it's murder, slavery or some such.
And while he'd sometimes repeat something in response to a funny quip or impression, he didn't feel compelled to try to top it, which is a rare gift -- letting his guest have their moment in the Sun helped make him the enormous success he was.
I loved this man. When I was a kid, I stuttered, and one day discovered that doing impressions of people I knew, cartoon characters, whatever, curbed my stammer to the point where it was almost unnoticed. I'd tried all kinds of methods to control my speech, but emulating other vocal patterns was the only thing that worked well. Now I barely stutter at all. Thanks, Rich!
I never thought I would feel this way myself, but I know what you’re talking about. I feel the same way. And I’m 50 years old! Sometimes I look at my computer, smart phone, and all the other crap and wish that they did not exist. I wish I could go back to the 1990s when none of the stuff was really around to the extent that it is today. Oh well. At least we can vicariously experience that time through these video clips.
Rich Little was an incredible impressionist. He could do spot on impressions, so perfect you couldn't tell it was an impression. He also had his own show which was great but it didn't gain momentum with it's small audience. ❤
You damned Canadians...trying to suck America down into your pit. Rich became an American(I can’t italicize American enough, or at all) after this appearance.

My god this stuff is gold! Rich and Johnny were both artists of the genre and perfected this kind of humor and banter, high water mark, and they played off each other so beautifully and with genuine warmth and mutual admiration. It doesn't get any better.
Rich Little is definitely the greatest impressionist of all time. Other cinediana have done good jobs at continuing the art such as John Byner and Dana Carvey, but Rich Little tops them all.
After I logged in to youtube today I couldn't believe this video was recommended. I haven't thought about Rich Little in years. What a classic. I grew up watching the man and still enjoy seeing this.

Say what you will, but Carson was a genuinely talented, intelligent and well-read host. He was thoroughly prepared before each guest, and you could tell it by the insightful and well-researched questions he asked. A true class act in every regard, as well as certainly being a very complicated and complex man. He is much missed today and every day. Rest in peace, Johnny Carson.

Mr. Carson will "NEVER BE MATCHED." You were a "CLASS ACT" that will forever be in our thoughts and prayers, and certainly never be forgotten, and never will be replaced by anyone.
Back then we didn't have tv with people talking about themselves, and attacking people who don't agree with them. People were more educated, and not by brainwashing like the liberal schools do now.
There still weren't many mutiple-TV households yet, but a lot of folks had TVs on wheels, and could roll the set into the bedroom to watch Carson in bed.
These guys had talent I’m 64 years old and these roads in 2021 with their fowl language with mother this and F that don’t even come close to the talent these guys have. I sure miss Johnny Carson, I’m so glad Rich is still alive.
As a Canadian, it is amazing to me that most Americans think that Rich Little is ALSO an American citizen; he is not, but we don't mind 'loaning' him out to do great shows like Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.........lay them in the aisles, Rich!
@13:35 I love how Carson cracks up, sneaks a drag of his cigarette and then is just in complete awe of what Rich Little is doing. True admiration of a comedic genius, FROM a comedic genius.
Yep I agree, and people keep saying Johnny hated when Rich little imitated him but you can tell that's not accurate. Johnny didn't like people really from my understanding, but when on TV you were funny, interesting or on point he honestly responded, no fakery or putting on airs. So I'm not convinced at all he disliked little, he literally giggles like a boy at this time you referenced and also when introducing him he respects him and says he envied his talent and humbled himself that little was the best at doing boghart.
At least not on the show. Reading the book by Henry Bushkin, Johnny Carson cursed like a sailor (no pun intended, as he served in the navy). He frequently dropped the f-bomb when drunk, used gd, and several other forms of profanity.
Rich Little is brilliant his ability to write and recite without a hiccup while impersonating is testament to this. Also shows how much of the Canadian culture is tied in the U.S. considering one of the best impersonators of U.S. actors and politicians was a guy from Ottawa Ontario.
Back then, a Canadian talent couldn't make a real living ,in that, the market is too small by itself, while right next door is the largest market. So usually all our great talents toured Canada and the states at the same time.
In high school in the early 80's i would watch when i could by myself... It was homey and comforting late at night... Kinda like Bob Barker/Monte Hall and Merv Griffen when i was home sick from school..it was company.✌
Johnny Carson and Nixon are my favorite Rich Little impressions. And Johnny looking on at his impression, and the Nixon one being done during Watergate is perfection!
I love to watch these old Carson clips now and then. He reminds me of my dad who was a very funny man and was born a month after Johnny in November 1925. Carson and many of the guests he had on remind me of my parents generation and how much they loved to laugh, having lived through some very bad times including the great depression and WWII.

That was absolutely great! I remember Rich Little and Carson and all of those greats, you just see this talent anymore!
And while he'd sometimes repeat something in response to a funny quip or impression, he didn't feel compelled to try to top it, which is a rare gift -- letting his guest have their moment in the Sun helped make him the enormous success he was.
well said
Arsenio Hall was probably the only other late-night host in the 20th century that came close to being as engaging with guests as Johnny was.
Rich Little's Richard Nixon is a scream and a half! I just can't get enough of it..lol!
His BEST of MANY classic's he does !!
Bogie too. "And I'dddddd have produced that key, if they hadn't pulled the Caine out of action."
Great stuff.
Especially during his nixon bit when he waves his hand over his face and changes expressions!!!
His Nixon's the best.
I was 10 years old when this ran....now I'm 59.......how time Flies !!!!!!!!
Hi, I was 5 when this aired. Yep, time flies!
I miss the old Earth
Me too
I just typed a 1,000 word lament, then realized you’d already said the same thing with five words, so I said screw it.
Yes we can Alpha
Me too...
Those were the days.........Rich Little on the Carson show, nothing but the best.
Jay Company Ozzie Nelso
classic Carson ; Rich Little = both of these guys are legends, in my book !
Great to see Rich Little on the Mike Huckabee show recently and he’s as brilliant as ever
Rich Little was an incredible impressionist. He could do spot on impressions, so perfect you couldn't tell it was an impression. He also had his own show which was great but it didn't gain momentum with it's small audience. ❤
Hello Debbie, How are you doing?
He still is!!
His brother Fred was actually a better impressionist.
Rich is a genius. Makes me proud to be a Canadian.
Always thought he was overrated, but that's just an opinion.
You damned Canadians...trying to suck America down into your pit.
Rich became an American(I can’t italicize American enough, or at all) after this appearance.
Speaking, of The Great White North........Dave Thomas, of "SCTV" fame, is the greatest Bob Hope Impersonator and/or Impressionist, ever, as if you did not know and he just turned 71, as of May 20. Happy Birthday, to him.
@@TheKiller-yh3pi When the U.S. gets an official language , then the people of the U.S. can criticize Canada .Until it does , Rich will always be a Canadian, he learned his craft in Canada .
That Bogart impression at the end, that is so spot on. That dedication and skill to remember those lines and mannerisms so well takes time. Never seen this clip before. Thanks so much.
Agree.
Agreed. But what movie was that from?
@@Tubetopfan1 The Caine Mutiny (1954)
look at the original
@@mitchsherwood822 Great movie. And in Colour. Some good copies ( either of the top 2 on the list ) are worth downloading from Pirate Bay. And of course free as well.
Greatest impressionist to ever walk planet earth...Rich Little!!!
Johnny was one of a kind never will be another as great as him The King of late night TV!!!!
One of the greatest impressionist of all time. Always loved him and grew up watchinghim
Hello Yvette, How are you doing?
I have always liked richs Jimmy Stewart act..
Each time I watch the Johnny Carson videos it's like having friends visiting.
There will never be another Johnny Carson NEVER
Wow Jack... That is beautifully profound. Well Said.
And they think socialism is the wave of the future.
@@valerieehrlich2254
The ones on late night TV now are punching above their weight class!
Miss the guys,,,what can I say,,,,
I miss Johnny Carson. I wish there was something entertaining on anymore. I really cannot watch anything on TV at noon Nevermind what they put on at night.
Carson was in a class by himself. Leno, Letterman and the rest are so lame by comparison.
From this time period David Frye and Frank Gorshin.
Frank Calliendo is probably better.
@@BobInKC1 yeah Frank Gorshin did the best Burt Lancaster
Nobody but nobody was better than Frank Gorshin!!! Hands down he was the best!!
@@ericsjursen7494 - Frank Caliendo is as good as any of them.
After I logged in to youtube today I couldn't believe this video was recommended. I haven't thought about Rich Little in years. What a classic. I grew up watching the man and still enjoy seeing this.
Just Plain Ole Tommy: thanks to CZcams & all the tireless Posters / Uploaders! Thank You folks!!
Without a doubt, two of the best entertainers of all time.
I used to love it when I got older and my parents let me watch the Tonight Show. It was the first show they let me watch late in the evening. I miss Johnny a lot. He always had the funniest guests.
Man...back when Hollywood had some CLASS to go along with all that talent! These days they have neither.
Gee Ess now it’s just bad talent and semoRATS!!!!
Johnny Carson was beating his wife while drunk in those days. You call that classier than today?
Gee Ess my mother always told me, if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say ANYTHING at all!!!!! Oh, wher were you when these beatings were going on?????
Class like Carson being a racist? Impressive.
Is that why Carson rarely had Black comics or actors on his show? Common sense?
Great stuff..... what a mix... the atmosphere the likes we'll never see again. I tried to never miss the Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.
I was 8 that year. And yet I remember Rich Little. He was big then! And I sure do miss Johnny. I watched him until the last show. And I miss that time, when the people I love were alive....
Nothing like it on TV today.
If there was something good on TV we wouldn't be on here.
@@matthewmclemore6465 "There IS..."? Where did you learn to write?
Wow, that green rug, and Johnnys desk, love it! And Richs clothes to.
Thellbro: try blue velvet bellbottom pants, maroon & white Patent-leather shoes... sox optional, a psychedelic guitar- strap 4 a belt topped off w/a Shirt that looked like one of my gr.-gramma's animal feedsacks in tiny flower designs (purple, green, maroon: I had all three for variety)... all worn @ the same time. Fortunately I remember few people laughing To My Face!! GOD Is Good!!!
Lapels and ties were at their widest. I think we're heading back in that direction.
Best talk show ever. No one has come close to Johnny Carson.
Rich Little was on fire.
Trip down memory lane. Was always great way to end every day, spending time with Johnny Carson. Thanks for all the fond memories and many, many laughs.
I saw him in Las Vegas in 2017 and he was as good as ever. I asked him his age and if I remember he said he was 82 at the time. God bless him!, As for Carson he was the best ever and I can't see anyone like him in the future or ever.
Rich Little was an awesome impersonator!! He was so much fun to watch!!
Carson and Little top of their game...1973, shag carpet....glad I was around to experience it.
His Jimmy Stewart is so perfect it's unbelievable...he nailed Johnny as well.
Mr. Carson will "NEVER BE MATCHED." You were a "CLASS ACT" that will forever be in our thoughts and prayers, and certainly never be forgotten, and never will be replaced by anyone.
Omg! his impression of Bogart was EXCELLENT!!! I just watched the Caine Mutiny the other day so that scene was still fresh in my mind.
Remember the old days? Before things changed? Things were better...before they changed.
Better TV? Better telephone service? Better safeguards our food and water? Better music? Better....? Better for whom?
Most assuredly Better TV before we had 1000+ channels and not one single thing to watch except reality tv. Better Quality without HD that is.
Back then we didn't have tv with people talking about themselves, and attacking people who don't agree with them. People were more educated, and not by brainwashing like the liberal schools do now.
Ian Washburn: you mean B4 what DemokRatz morphed N2: the communist, socialist, Global-ists they are?.
U.S. population in the 1950s 150,000,000. Now 325,700,000. Have something to do with it?
Thanks for posting this. Priceless, we used to stay up late fridays to watch Johnny. Great stuff!!!
There still weren't many mutiple-TV households yet, but a lot of folks had TVs on wheels, and could roll the set into the bedroom to watch Carson in bed.
The one and ONLY Rich Little! None better, EVER!!!
These guys had talent I’m 64 years old and these roads in 2021 with their fowl language with mother this and F that don’t even come close to the talent these guys have. I sure miss Johnny Carson, I’m so glad Rich is still alive.
I have always loved and adored Rich Little since I was a teenager.
Hello Susan, How are you doing?
I miss how long they would dedicate to one guest.
As a Canadian, it is amazing to me that most Americans think that Rich Little is ALSO an American citizen; he is not,
but we don't mind 'loaning' him out to do great shows like Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.........lay them in the aisles, Rich!
Great just great brings back my youth and no quarantine
I CAN REMEMBER AFTER THE TONIGHT SHOW THE NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYED & THE STATION SIGNED OFF FOR THE NIGHT
Mine didn't. Tom Snyder came on after Carson. Then a local 15-minute church show after Snyder.... and THEN the station signed-off.
Jamie McVay I always remember that too and some stations it would like a prayer called thoughts to live by. Nice old times!
your station did not broadcast the tomorrow show
That's right Tom did come on after Carson
"Georgia" played in GA. ♡
Rich Little, the original master of impressions.
@Jeepman89 It was also said that Carson banned Little from The Tonight Show.
Those were the days. I moved here from england in 85 and Every night, I'd go to bed and watch carson then letterman. It was so wonderful...
I love Rich Little's talent.
No profanities and no cursing and no swear words and it's still an excellent classy show!!!
So much time has gone by that it's hard to remember just how talented these two were. God bless.
Johnny Carson and Nixon are my favorite Rich Little impressions. And Johnny looking on at his impression, and the Nixon one being done during Watergate is perfection!
Thank goodness Rich Little is still here
I love to watch these old Carson clips now and then. He reminds me of my dad who was a very funny man and was born a month after Johnny in November 1925. Carson and many of the guests he had on remind me of my parents generation and how much they loved to laugh, having lived through some very bad times including the great depression and WWII.
Rich was on ALL of those " Watergate " voices !! * great !... I was 10 in 1973 and remember when it was all on TV !! HISTORY !
