Have a 6yr old male Working Line. Amazing animal. The focus, intensity and total immersion into everything going on is shocking if you have not been around one before. They are on another level with their innate protection and situational awareness. So teachable, smart and willing to work yet calm and mature enough to make the right decision. If you have not been close to a big male and their dragon-like bark - you should 😁 it will put the fear of God in you -fast !

I had a western GSD work line, her name was CoCo. She was an escape artist. Tracked me down with no problem, very intelligent, could open the the screen door, loved to play in the woods, loved being outside in any weather, and was just an all around damn good dog. See ain't let anyone in the yard except my family or my friends she seen me interact with daily. She could tell when I was close to home when I was walking. Before my car days. Lol she was her max healthy weight, no health issues, great fur, great teeth. She would not leave my side and if I told someone to hold her while I walked off, she would wine and immediately come to me asap.😂 she'd hunt/kill small animals, and got along with other dogs. The only time she ain't like a human or another dog was if they energy was off or I didn't like them/the dog. So yes I approve of getting one if you love GSD, they're loyal asf, hard working, and simple to train/up keep.

Going on our 5th German Shepherd, 4 were working, our last was a show. What difference in purpose. Our last "showdog" was possibly the most beautiful and sweetest dog Ive ever known or seen especially in GSD category. Protection was out the windown but thats another story..LOL. My only concern as of late has been the rise in disease. Our last two both had Degenertive Mylopathy, very hard on everyone. The show dog ALSO had EPI and Perinal fistula, he was dealt a bad card but such a loving boy, we miss. Our next will be a black working gsd, I look fwd to the training. Nice video.

Simply put, a show dog is better for a less experienced owner, and a working dog is for a more experienced/active owner. You can have them do the same things, and the show dog will do it but the working dog will have better results because it’s desire to work is stronger. If you’re used to show/companion dogs you could find a working dog annoying because they just want you to give them something to do

@@yolysun7420 Things are really busy right now. We have a lot of coyotes and bobcat..My dogs have in the past killed several of each. Right now I have one elderly k9 who I will care for till she passes and she will not tolerate another dog. I had a flock of domestic blue slate turkeys and the bobcats tried constantly to get at them . One of my dogs would sit on the porch and watch while the other slept. When the dog on watch went off I would grab a gun and by then the other dog was outside. I try to get a pair male and female both nuetered.I never lost a bird. When Tank passed away and Lucy's age caught up to her I lost all 30 birds in a single summer even with my guns. We also have occasional cougars I still remember a foggy night during my first year on the farm. Both dogs refused to go outside even for toilet without an escort. You can bet I had both my AR and my 1911 and was looking through a thermal gunsight for any heat source lol.

@Philip Briney--thanks so much for responding. I know that GS can kill coyotes. I didn't know they are able to kill bobcats as well. I think GS, even working lines, are no match for a cougar. I'm guessing you'll need at least a pack of four GS just to deter a cougar. It's reassuring to know that GS can protect the farm just ljke a LGD was meang to do. Do you have wolves in your area and have your dogs fought w/ wolves? And having an AR and 1911 always help. Preserve the 2nd ammendment! LOL. Thanks again.

I have 5 German Shepherds and have both Show and Working. I and another breeder outcrossed the lines. Most people don't have the time, patience , or training knowledge for a working line, but what a working line brings to the picture is better health genetically. Better structure, more stable mind. Yes, most people want the Showline, and all of our dogs are from Germany or near Germany, but you still can risk getting a dog genetically weak in health. We always did x-rays and DNA testing before we bred and never had a problem with a single working dog or pup we brought over but had several Showline that had heart murmurs and several with bad elbows. Those were altered and given away free without a health guarantee. Breeding, unfortunately, is a tough business, so don't plan on becoming rich.
The goal was to provide a mentally sound, healthy pup that had the desire to learn but wasn't so over the top that a regular person couldn't handle it. We didn't want our pups ending up in the shelter. Obviously, not every pup turned out, looking like a red/black Showline. Some ended up looking more sable, looking bi, having blanket backs. We ended up with several pups growing up to go through training and get certified as service animals and have a ton of them being involved in competition sports. I just got an email that a female pup from my final litter before I retired is currently ranked the 12th fastest German shepherd in AKC FastCat!!!! She also finished her testing and is now a certified therapy dog and competes in AKC Scent trials. Yay! Makes this German Shepherd Grandma proud. 🐾

I have had showlines and every single one of them have been able to jump in the back of my truck. My showline also climbed up the walls as I just seen in your videos as my best friend has a working line. The showline is just as stable and trusting. Showlines are wonderful dogs they are not as intense as working lines. But absolutely just as stable. My showline did EVERYTHING my friends working line did just not as intense. I have brought her everywhere and she handled every situation with incredible stability. So I don’t think this is a fair video at all… showlines do way more then run around the ring…

Pretty much guaranteed to be lame at an early age. It's disgusting what they have done to the German Shepherd. I have a female German shepherd guide dog. She has a flat back.
