  • As a latchkey kid, Wendy Speake turned to sugar for comfort. Every Friday, she would pedal to the candy show and use her allowance to fill her bag with candy. And one day, when she was older and a mom of three young boys, she came to realize that she was still “pedaling” away from her stress and using sugar as comfort, instead of turning to Jesus. She was joyless, worn out, tired, and in need of a change.
In this interview, Wendy will challenge Christians to take 40 days to focus on fasting from something they turn to instead of Jesus for comfort. She invited people to break free from a dependence on sugar and taste the goodness of God.

I had an addiction to carbs. Turned out I was low on neurotransmitters in my brain. You have to go to a functional medicine doctor to get that kind of stuff tested. Not to distract from Jesus...He is most important, but I was led to do the test, and I feel much better now.

Yes! Functional medicine and neurotransmitter supplementation helps so much. It truly worked for me. Best wishes, N

I agree, absolutely. And if you want to understand how satan is using the food giants to hook us on sugar, etc. read 'Salt, Sugar, Fat' by Michael Moss

I would like to iterate that the intention of eating healthily is not pathological. It's when it causes extreme weight loss or extreme mental distress that it is unhealthy. I'm disappointed that Jim Daly chose to talk more about his fascination with it being possible to eat healthily with the result of illness and distress than to listen to Kate talk. I am thankful, however, that Kate spoke, that Focus is talking about the connection between physical and spiritual health, and that we all have an opportunity to prayerfully consider what the Lord is asking of us in terms of our attachments to certain kinds of food, including sugar. May the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, and may our hearts be enlightened that we may know the hope that belongs to our call. Amen.

It’s so strange to me how easily Christians call out sugar addiction, but completely ignore caffeine addiction, which is much more serious and addictive if you look at the change in brain chemistry.
Why is no one writing books or making videos about all Christians giving up coffee?

I never had much of a sweet tooth but something happened during my 2nd and 3rd trimester of my pregnancy. Now, 3 months postpartum, I feel addicted to sugar... cookies, gummy sweets, ice cream, soda and fruit juices are my drugs of choice.
    I need help😐

Today more than ever there are healthy alternatives to all the foods you mentioned.
Ice Cream: Rebel Creamery, Mammoth Creameries, ketopint, killercreamery
      Soda: Zevia soda (w/Stevia)
Stevia, monk fruit, chicory root - in *smoothies, yogurt, soda drinks
      sugar alternatives for Baking:
Monk fruit: muffins, cookies, cakes. Lakanto Monkfruit sweetener is a combination of Erythritol and monk fruit extract.
      Allulose: pancakes, muffins, etc.
      Truvia: Stevia and Erythritol Blend.
try watching Dr. Sten Ekberg on CZcams and see if you like him. Controlling your food choices and intake is an important discipline. Currently I'm into fasting, and it's great. If that sounds strange just look into it.

Thanks to Noni for bringing this up....I’m in the same boat.....my parents just gave me sweets my whole young life. And, MRTdiver, thanks for taking the time to write out all these substitutions. I took a screen shot! I really appreciate this!
