Fun show, great to see more people interested in pinball, and great to see fresh fans being accepted and courted.

Awesome to see you guys together. Ralph should be a guest every few weeks so he can give regular updates on how many arcade players he’s converted to pinball players. 🤘

Pinball is the best.. even the toxic parts get funny after a while. In terms of BOM.. in addition to costs.. they have to run sales estimates so running a Black Knight with no license cost might be a great margin boost.. but they’ll sell less because maybe the interest is less. They also have to account for the rainy day. Historically there are only small number of releases.. if one doesn’t do well and they blew all the profits from another.. they’ll be in the red. Smart companies also need to maintain a cash surplus to account for future bumps in the road.. or even account for increase license costs 2-3 years down the road. Better to prep today then wait till the month leading up to signing the contract

Awesome show. I’ve been watching Retro Ralph’s content forever now, and come from his side of the tracks as it were (though I’m with Joel… mucking about with CRTs is not something I’ve ever been willing to do either). I love your play streams, but more of this kind of thing would certainly be great. Thanks for the fun!

Enjoyed the discussion as someone newer to the game I really enjoyed the cost discussion.

The cost delta from arcade1up to real arcades and pinball is huge. A homemade mame is $1-2k, and a new pinball is $7-12K.
Stern invited the top reviewers to the factory to meet the people, but what is the story behind wick? Showing the QA process is smoke and mirrors. Very few people are complaining about wick QA. Wick cannot have QC issues, the 4 mechs (the car, the one drop target, the crate, and the blood marker) are way too simple. The jaws fin is a completely different story. It was a new mech that is very complex and QC issues are justified in my mind.
Forget the lack of guns on wick, stern won’t change the art although they could offer optional side art, plastics and translight art. Arcades are full of guns and violence, starting to make a big deal out of it now is 25 years too late. They won’t and never will change the art because it is admitting a mistake. The game play still sucks. The art sucks. The BOM is cheap. Where does it go from here?

Does stern ever run sales on machines? Or would that be up to a distributor if they want to sell at any type of discount?

The only games Stern sells directly are a few LE’s on each release day. Everything else is sold through a distributor.

Before it was stated by Stern that Star Wars was how it was because of the cost of the license.

Interesting. I’ll have to dive into that more. If that’s the case then that would make it very challenging to design a game with a massive license.

Stern has enough creative power , artists, and story tellers to create characters and make new pins without license issues. They just need to pull it together with all their various staff. People want great pins. Great art, play, music, mechs. Sure nostalgia plays a part, but people will gravitate towards good games. By example, I am interested in playing foo fighters, but can’t stand the music.
