Johnny was ahead of his time. He's playing some cool T. Bone Walker licks on a Fender Stratocaster.

An addictive guitarist. I listen to it many times. It seems like a miracle to listen to a song made entirely of live sound. The riffs are good, the saxophones are good, and I always think it's new.

That guitar riffing sounds like it was heavily influential on Dick Dale, Lonnie Mack, and Jimi Hendrix, among others. Has a super drippy reverb sound I'm certain influenced a lot of the Surf Rock acts that came after in the early 1960's.

According to Rick James in his autobiography “Glow”, Hendrix memorized this and it’s where he got the idea to combine distortion with highly recognizable riffs :))
James also mentions Donald Duck Dunn in the book but not with regards to this (I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same musician?).
As a personal note I do know that there was already distortion happening in the rockabilly and Cajun rock scene.
One of the main takeaways from Glow is that all acts and scenes tend to have some overlap and influence each other due to great mutual admiration.
His recollections of learning melodic guitar from Neil Young while schooling Neil about R&B in Toronto are fantastic.
He has similar stories about working with Allman in Miami and Stephen Stills/Neil Young in LA.
There’s a little bit of Rick all over Rock n Roll history, and a little bit of Rock all over Rick.
I would think that’s what took place here too.
      :))

@@thinkofsomethingcooler "James also mentions Donald Duck Dunn in the book but not with regards to this (I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same musician?).": Now that you mention Rick James being influenced by Donald "Duck" Dunn and Neil Simon, who influenced Donald "Duck" Dunn from Booker T. and the MG's? And speaking of "distortion happening in the rockabilly and Cajun rock scene", did you know one of those forefathers was the legendary Pat Hare from Sun Records who had two songs he collaborated on with the legendary bluesman James Cotton titled "Cotton Crop Blues" and "Hold me in your arms", both released in 1954?. In addition, Pat Hare's " guitar work with Little Junior's Blue Flames had a major influence on the rockabilly style (song titled ", and his guitar playing on blues records by artists such as Muddy Waters was influential among 1960s British Invasion blues rock bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. Moreover, Pat Hare played the electric guitar solo on "Love My Baby" (1953), which later inspired the rockabilly style.

Always one of my favorites of all time. Severely underrated. Check out the SRV outro lick ("Pride and Joy")-SRV only copied from the best.

So odd hearing and realizing the horns date this song. The guitar rifts are pretty timeless.
