I should also mention, the CRT type monitor/grainy effect can be switched off if you want - it seems to have made the video a bit blurry, so apologies for that, I didn't know until it was uploaded and I can't re-record everything with it off. When playing it wasn't blurry though!
So the effect messes with the video compression algorithm?

effects with lots of small particles (like confetti) destroy video compression algorithms, so that's probably why.
*10:35 You, the prince to the throne, were placed under the command of a Veteran (I think Admiral Daud - not easy to find character names outside the game) put under the lens that the Capital of your homeland just got vaporized you take control of the Imperial Fleet as the new assumed King. Your advisor states that taking the enemies one nuclear plant would put negotiations of surrender on the table.
The visual mashup of WWII, Russia, The Middle East and Dune look first class. This is very hard to do well (looking at you, Shadow and Bone).

Funfact: You can land your ships anywhere. You can do this to set up ambushes outside settlements or the paths between them.
Expanding on this, landing the flagship in the middle of nowhere and running sorties out of it is often a good idra
This looks so much like many of the old MicroProse games: strategy layer, tactical layer, variety of minigames set in context of the meta game, immersive manual, etc.
good news is that it is a micro prose game. theyre going back to their old ways and its great imo.

Yes, and to those Submarine simulators as well, both from 90's and these days. Quite often I think about LHX and how plain and ugly it looks compared to current games and yet I spent so many hours playing it.

@@briani7858 Just for context, it is a game that Microprose picked up, not developed. They are great, but they pick up games by various small developers and promote them, not develop them. This particular game was in development for at least 8 years, it's made by a Russian named Konstantin Koshutin (the lead of the eponimous design studio) and allegedly just one other person not counting composers and additional art.
Funnest strategy? Taking apart your entire fleet, then reassembling them into one mega ship.
Best part too? I won the campaign by doing this, it's actually viable

@@Sintarzus MicroProse didn't even exist (again, I'm talking post Cybergun era) for that long though (the real revival was in 2019)... The other thing is, MicroPose is about to release like dozens of games the coming months (around 20 for the next couple of years). They really have not been working on just this one game. And no game is ever stuck in 'development hell' for seven years. That's just bs.
@@PHeMoX Highfleet was actually developped by a small indie team, and they only decided to partner with revived Microprose for publishing recently.

If I went back in time to my Amiga 600 / Atari ST playing self, this is how I would have imagined games of the future. This game is a real ode to gaming nostalgia; these are the types of games we 40 year olds used to play growing up.

Looking at the 2D fights, the game lore, the music... somehow it all seemed vaguely familiar. Then I found out, Highfleet is by Konstantin Koshutin, maker of Hammerfight, a game I've sunk over 400 hours into. You can think of Highfleet as Hammerfight 2.0. Can't wait to get this now. Thanks for this video.

There was a patch today that added some more options (mouse acceleration) and better resolution scale. Still not perfect, the screen gets offset on my ultrawide monitor, but it's great to see many of the big concerns being addressed. Technical problems aside, the game is a real gem.
And this is why people don't like ultrawide

@@Shinzon23 Ultrawide is just so good when it works. I played through Half Life 2 for the first time last year. First tried on old 1080p 60hz and it felt shit. Really hard to get immersed. Got a 3440p 100hz monitor and tried it again. It was amazing experience. Would have never enjoyed it without getting ultrawide.

This game straddles the line between incredible and entirely too complicated.
It's a bit overwhelming at the start, but I'm now about 10 hours into playing it and am starting to feel like I've got a basic grip on all the systems.
Every button in the cockpit does something. What do they do? I have no idea yet
at least it isnt Hearts of Iron or Crusader Kings level of Complicated.

If you *really* need some help though, the manual is a very helpful source and has that feel of late 90s manuals.
Every time you do a playthrough, see it through to the very end. It's when you are down on luck and hunted by multiple strike groups that you will learn the best lessons. Also, look stuff up in the manual if needed :)
The atmosphere reminds me so much of Homeworld, mixed maybe with Endless Space. I rarely try out new games, but this might be worth it...

Honestly I think it's the same universe too, except a thousand years ahead. Seeing as the ships control similarly except they have modern weapons lol

Think there is a mouse you can unlock scroll wheel to really speed up that dial turning when trying to find frequencies, etc.

They just released a patch for exactly that mouse issue. Hope it really got fixed.

You should check out Hammerfight, the first and only game of its kind (to the best of my knowledge) by the Highfleet designer. it was his first game.

The visuals are amazing and very innovative. Good games bring one or two new things to the table, I'm only 7 minutes in and highfleet seems to be on the 5th amazing one already. Visually, everything is special and the UI seems to blend into the action perfectly. I'm intrigued, wishlisted!
There's an interesting part about the game's world. For example, Gerat is a real place - it's a province in Afghanistan. Khiva - is a city in Uzbekistan, and during the times of Russian Empire it was a capital city of Khanate of Khiva. And there were three Russian expeditions there in 1717, in 1839 and in 1873

Reminds me a bit of Deserts of Kharak - and it will probably be similarly overlooked by the mainstream, which is a shame.
Deserts of kharak has much better plot than in Highfleet. I think prologue is more interesting than main game. Brilliant mechanics and visuals, but game not finished.
I think it was just because combination of triple A corruption in gaming journalism (see also: IGN which is like a parody of itself) along with the era of RTS games being bygone for awhile now. Which is a shame really, because I found quite a number of really fantastic or even ambitious RTS titles which just came out at the wrong time, like Grey Goo. It's clear they were angling for being the next Starcraft but came out a decade too late, and a lot of other stuff like SupCom I found really lackluster.
I also think people who were fans of the original just didn't generate as much hype because it was 2D now. I still think it's one of the best RTS games I've played and the amount of optimization was phenomenal. One of the best looking and best optimized games I've ever played anywhere. The thing runs on an actual mid-range 1gb GPU potato PC at ultra settings all while managing to look better than most games coming out in 2020, although then again phoneshit is already really dragging down the quality of games in general.

A silly thing but I love the way the smoke hangs in the air. Due to the render cost i guess almost all games depict smoke effects for just a few seconds after an explosion etc.

I just want to give a mention to Airships: conquer the skies. The premise and gameplay is extremely similar. It's like a Lite version of Highfleet. You can build everything from scratch and research things while looking at a map while the enemy also moves in real time. It's mainly about the 2d ship combat in a steampunk/Dieselpunk setting. Very much should take a look at that as well if you're not looking to get super immersed in Highfleet.

The options in the dialogues are dependant on your values set, that is displayed in the bottom right.
Latest videos both on highly aesthetic games I like and very good for helping me try and determine my feelings, I got highfleet already I like it but it was very expensive, 40 bucks for me, but its also gorgeous and I bought it mostly for how it looks, carrier command 2 is very similar also expensive also pretty also interesting, but also a bit of a hard call, thank you for both these videos I appreciate them plenty

The main issue is I’m a late comer to PC gaming. I was a console gamer until 2013, only playing Total War and Age of Empires before that. So I missed a lot, I’ve been catching up though with streams of old games like Starcraft, Homeworld, Empire at War, Stronghold etc.
@@RepublicOfPlay Nice! I'd be more than happy to see more of this RePlay idea. If you liked Age of Empires and such, maybe you'd end up liking Empire Earth 1/2. The 2nd is probably the peak, before the downfall with the third.
Edit; And/or some old Command & Conquer games, like Generals etc.
