      There are some achievements I like because they extend the life of the game by incentivizing replay, if the game is enjoyable. New Game + completion if it’s well designed, different game style or karma outcomes if they really effect the gameplay and the world, challenge modes if they aren’t crazy hard. Then there’s other ones that are just like, just play the game again. Non-stacking difficulty mode achievements, or ones where you have to unlock higher difficulties, different game style or karma where it doesn’t change the game much at all (like playing as different classes in Mass Effect), different endings where it’s just one decision at the end and it doesn’t let you reload from a save.

    • @The_QuestionIRL
      @The_QuestionIRL Před rokem +1

      For my money, the stealth achievement, Foxiest of the Hounds is the worst. Like the book achievement is tedious, but if you are following a guide, you can do it.
      This one is a not set off alarms achievement, which has all sorts of weird rules that are never really explained.(see the difference between the Ghost bonus and the Smooth Operator bonus.) You can't track the achievement, so the only way you'll know if you got it or not is when you complete the game.
      The first and last levels in the game are really not designed for stealth at all, so they can kill your stealth playthrough right there.
      And then there are the bugs. The closest way to track that achievement was to see if you got the Smooth Operator bonus after you cleared a level. If you got the bonus, you were on track to get the achievement. Except later versions of the game had a bug which would stop you from getting this bonus if you loaded a saved game after being spotted.
      And the Picus level had a bug where Smooth Operator wouldn't display, even if you cleared the level without setting off the alarm. So you never knew if you didn't get that bonus because you were spotted, or due to a bug.
      In short a really frustrating achievement.

    Any achievements requiring me to take part in the online/multiplayer aspect of a game are going to stay missed. As for the ones that take a lot of prep to do, those are the ones I look up a guide for to make sure I don't screw up. See getting the Usurpation of Flame ending for Dark Souls 3 and the squid ending of Bloodborne (also just all of Eileen's quest so I could keep her alive and not angry at me). If I do ever Platinum Bloodborne, it's going to take me ages since I haven't even touched the Chalice Dungeons beyond a little exploring of the very first one I made. Happily the dungeons to do not scale up in NG+, so I can just do them then. I'm also honestly bad at achievements that require me being too mean or whatever, or choosing paths that I can't bring myself to choose.
    That Tomb Raider one definitely isn't worth the effort just based on the fact that you have to do all the conversations in one run. At least most games are pretty generous at letting you get the achievements whenever you want and not all in the same run. Hell, most of them require multiple runs because of different endings.
    "Can this not count as one of the fetch quests?" lmao. I took a break from RDR2 after not getting very far into it because I didn't have the energy to devote so much time and effort in it at the time. I've reinstalled it after getting a M.2 SSD to expand my internal storage of the PS5, but I still haven't started it up. I'm so rusty and I can't remember what all I was doing, so I'll need to start a new game. I don't want to do that tutorial bit again.

      FightingCowboy has a 100% plat walkthrough for Bloodborne. You need to read the comments sometimes to avoid making fatal errors though, like letting the wrong hunter die (or accidentally killing her). As thorough as he was through most of it, there were moments like that which could completely fuck your whole game up if you weren't quick enough on hard closing it out before tragedy struck.

    • @SolaScientia
      @SolaScientia Před rokem +2

      @@ledumpsterfire6474 For Bloodborne I need just 9 trophies in order to pop the plat. 3 of those are endings (which also takes care of the trophies for Gehrman and Moon Presence since those bosses are directly tied to the endings, thankfully), 3 are bosses, 2 are hunter weapons (main game and DLC), 1 is for hunter tools. I'll get Orphan and Laurence this time. Queen of Yharnam will be at some point when/if I do the Chalice Dungeons. The weapons are annoying to get though. I'm also not sure which tool I'm missing. All the major ones are done though and weren't too bad to get. Bloodborne is, on the whole, a lot more straightforward with things than the Souls games.

    • @ledumpsterfire6474
      @ledumpsterfire6474 Před rokem

      @@SolaScientia Truth be told, I don't really like the Souls games because of that. The exploration is too "messy," convoluted. For me at least.
      Never knowing if a boss was ridiculously hard because it was a hard boss or because I'm simply there too early.
      Landing yourself in an area that's very near impossible to escape from with your current build/stats, because the way you came in closed off behind you and is now forcing you to get through an area you shouldn't have been in for another several hours or so.
      An area or boss battle where some obscure item is damn near mandatory to get through it without god-like skill, but that item is arbitrarily tucked away somewhere totally unassuming, possibly in the middle of an optional area.
      Bloodborne circumvented a lot of that, and thank fucking god it did, because it's a masterpiece.

    • @SolaScientia
      @SolaScientia Před rokem +1

      @@ledumpsterfire6474 The messy aspect is mostly seen in Elden Ring with so much freedom of exploration. In the Soulsborne games and Sekiro, them being more linear a bit makes it easier to see if you're overleveled or not. Part of that too is leveling up when you have the souls/echoes to do so and not spending them on stuff early on. I was overleveled when I fought Alrdrich in Dark Souls 3, because I cleared the Irithyll Dungeons and killed Yhorm before him. At least with Yhorm the sword you need is right in the room with you. I'm barely in the level range for the Orphan of Kos (level 89), but I'm managing it just fine. I will say that when I need to farm echoes in Bloodborne to restock my blood vials, they sure make farming easy. I don't really farm for souls in Dark Souls 3, but if I did I'm having a hard time thinking of places that are easy to farm. Bloodborne has a number of good areas for farming. As for being at the right level, I only run into that question when I'm up against an optional boss. If it's mandatory I'm usually always in the right level range for it. The Old Hunters kicked my ass hard when I first started it. Martyr Logarius was also a pain.
      I will say that I find the Orphan of Kos actually easier than Laurence. I hate Laurence. His boss run is trash. I can't read his moves very well and it's just horrible. I nearly had the Orphan last night (just 2-3 hits away). I can parry him and backstab him pretty easily now. Laurence is the most bullshit boss I've ever fought, I think.

    The audio diary achievement in the original Bioshock. You can revisit areas and find almost every one, but there are a couple in the starting area, which you can’t return to, and is early in the game so you almost certainly didn’t look at a guide yet on your first playthrough.
    I think there are also a couple in later areas that you lose access to (like maybe Ryan’s office and Tenenbaum’s shelter?)
    Burnie from Rooster Teeth once mentioned a great idea, that there should be an achievement website, spoiler-free, that just tells you what you need to know to not miss whole-game achievements (I think he was talking about doing 30 missions with the same horse in RDR).

    Tales of Beseria: Velvet's side quest needs you to see several skits AND get Velvet's cooking level to 20.
    That's not cooking 20 times. It's leveling the cooking to 20. The easiest way is to have Velvet auto cook at the beginning and get into way too many fights.
    Guess who found that out at the end of the game!!!
    Honestly several of the Tales of Beseria side quests could go here.

    I feel like speedrunning trophies should count for this as well, since they're almost always easily missable if you don't know they exist before hand and are planning on going for them, and force you to replay the entire game, (usually in a fairly specific way if you want to be fast enough), to get them. I pretty much immediately give up on getting the platinum in most games if I learn that there's one for speedrunning, since while that sort of thing can be fun on its own, it's annoying to be forced to do it.

    Best bromance from the original final fantasy 7. You have 4 options for Cloud to go on a date with. All 4 characters have invisible affection values for Cloud. Barret starts the game with 0, and Aeris/Aerith starts with the most at 50. You basically have to guide all the dialog options up to that point in the game to get the trophy. Very easy to miss.

    Prey (2017) has an achievement at the very beginning of the intro, for killing yourself on the blades of the helicopter before the game even begins.
    Though if you want to get 100% of the achievements you’ll probably have to play through the game *at least* 3 times, and complete several timeloops in the Mooncrash DLC.
    I did about 5.5 Preythroughs not including DLC before I platinumed the list.

      There are so many different way to navigate the station depending on what Neuromods and Chipsets you own/invest in.
      Or you can literally just stack blobs from the Gloo Gun to create a path.
      And there are multiple endings, so 3 Preythroughs really isn’t asking too much, as unless you’re married to a particular Preystyle, each time feels unique.
      The only reason it took me more than three is because I wasn’t being careful on my Kill All Humans run, and let one self detonate by accident, so it wasn’t by my hand, and the attempt was void.

    Just before the era of 'systematic console/platform achievements, Dungeon Siege had a easter egg of a secret level on the default multiplayer campaign...that was only accessible with three items - an extraneous book found in the campaign's final boss battle, a crystal from a challenging 'extra' dungeon...

    In the original Assassin's Creed (1), the cutscenes would display a random shimmer at points. If you pressed the right button at the right time when that shimmer appeared, it would switch to a new camera angle. It didn't tell you that's what they were, or which button to press. You just had to know. Or discover it several missions in.

    My personal addition is the 'Daredevil' achievement from Nier Replicant. It requires you to play through the game AT LEAST 2 TIMES (One whole run through parts 1 and 2 and then another 2 runs through part 2. Oh, and make sure you don't miss any of the weapons in part 1 or else getting the ending required the progress through them all will now be unobtainable.) just to have the OPPROTUNITY to get it, and how you get it is by looking up a character's skirt 10 times when she becomes playable. And she only becomes playable after you've played those 2 times. If you complete her section before getting the achievement, welp, you'll have to start over completely from scratch on a new save. And by the way, getting to her section already requires you to wipe your old saves and make a new one then play through the first 2-4 hours of the game AGAIN.
