When we think of pirates, we often picture those who active were in the Caribbean during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Flamboyantly dressed, armed with cutlasses and pistols, readily seeking out new treasures from aboard their sailing ships with the Jolly Roger flying from the top mast. Modern media depictions have certainly reinforced this stereotype but as we shall explore in this video, the historical truth is some what obscured by myth and fantasy. This is the history of the real pirates of the Caribbean
In this episode, we examine the beginnings and causes of piracy in the Caribbean, starting with the Spanish empire conquering the americas, whose plentiful treasures would prove tempting and easy targets for the passing English and French privateers of the 16th century.
It was not until the mid 1600's, that piracy really became established in the Caribbean. The Buccaneers operating out of Tortuga and Port Royal, with names such as Henry Morgan, Bartholomew Sharp and Henry Every, would plunder the settlements of the Spanish Main and capture their treasure ships making the return journey to Europe.
Later, in the 18th century, during what became known as the Golden Age of Piracy, the likes of Blackbeard, Charles Vane, Calico Jack, Stede Bonnet, Sam Bellamy, Mary Read and Anne Bonny, who were all part of the notorious Flying Gang operating out of Nassau's Republic of Pirates, began to establish a name for themselves which history would remember them by to this day.

Black Beard actually got married and quit piracy to move to the Carolinas. He did end up leaving his wife to return to being a pirate. No one really knows what happened to his wife. His real last name was Thatch or is to believed to be. He's probably one of the most infamous pirates of all time. Biographies on him say he was actually a quiet and reserved man but loved a specticle. He would dress up when they attacked and boarded a ship. He would attach long fuses to his hat tgen light them. He wore two swords and three or four gun belts across his chest. He would act insane and terrify the captain and crew if the ship he boarded. He also suffered from syphilis so that probably attributed to his craziness. He ended up being executed by having his head cut off snd his body thrown out to sea.
He was dead before his head was cut off. When he was cut down, he had over 20 sword cuts and 5 bullet holes. Then his head was cut off and placed on the bow of the attacking ship.

What you said is not accurate at all
The famous Bartholomew Roberts quote could be quite hard for people to understand, since he uses sentence structure and word placement in ways modern people don't, so to anyone struggling to get it, here is a modernized version of what he is saying:
*_The typical man works hard for very little money, barely even affording food. In piracy, there is plenty of money and food, peace of mind, and freedom. Who would not favor being a Pirate, when the only negative would be a quick hanging? For me, this is the life I choose, a short and happy one._*

@danduley56 your mother has enjoyed multiple internal massages from several men who are not your farther.
I never had much of an interest in pirates or even naval combat for the longest time but I got a game called Port Royale 2 for $0.49 and its really sparked my interest. Like the name implies, it takes place in this exact area and time as you build your own little pirate organization, doing pretty much everything that was laid out in this video and interacting with all the towns. You can even buy up real estate, as well as getting money through trade, then through plunder.
I'd really recommend it to anyone who found this video interesting. The game is nearly 2 decades old, but if you have an interest in this stuff it's worth checking out.
I have been waiting for a series about pirates and your videos are animated, scripted and narrated perfectly. Please don’t stop! Subscribed
What a fantastic documentary. Succinct and filled with engrossing details. Definitely provides ppl interested in pirate history with many details worth springboarding into for deeper dive. Thank you 🙏
Probably the BEST source for an easy to follow and rich history of mainstream piracy!

Very interesting and well told. Never realised the origin of Buccaneers. Our views of pirates come from Swift, RL Stevenson and Victorian authors.
This is like listening to a short audio book with a video I appreciate this 🔥💯
Thanks for the research and work to make this excellent video👍
Superb content and exquisitely presented. Very enjoyable. Thank you.

My wife's grandmother was born on a plantation in Jamaica to slaves who escaped to Panama. Pirates were some of her ancestors.
very solid
So that’s what are the Private companies I always wondering huh? They are the pirates.
No matter what you think of them Brits, you can't knock a country that let's you attack a country that just robbed natives who couldn't defend themselves and robbed all their gold, and when the Brits attacked the Spanish, the King would give you a fist bump, or the equivalent at that time.
The Brits were just salty that the Spanish robbed them of the opportunity to loot the natives.
@@rishikeshwagh the world's loss, as if them Brits had got their first they would have left the country with a world class transport system and court system that didn't kill people just because they didn't get any rain that year, etc, it would have been a country that today would have been one of the top ten country's, not like some 3rd world country's that don't listen and learn, them Brits have done more for this world than any others, yes they made mistakes but they learned from them and changed, only haters will disagree,
@@darrenmorgan870Bro what. When people came from europe to north america (apart from spain) made intentional disasters. Spain left biggest number of natives, and most of the ones that died was mostly to do illness brought from europe, not intentional, since obviously they were their working force. Also Don’t forget what the british did to india, it was developing just fine, and then the british came and exploited the country. I don’t see india being a first world country today, do you? Also some natives americans actualy sided with the spanish to end the reign of some leaders that treated them with cluelty anyways. Some religious leaders advocated later for the rights of the natives, and After centuries of governing the colonies and trying to jmplement this, it was finally put to practice. The spanish actually integrated with the natives to some degree, and gave rise to the mix of races we see in latin america today. I’m not spanish, and I know Spain did bad things of course and colonizing is still bad, but they were of the least cruel from the many european colonizers. Sorry for my bad english.
@jhonwander9493 Britain is an island and they got hit more than most like the plague which killed off whole villages towns and big cities and ......

Rule the seas rule the world.
Good telling but you should have included the end of the pirate / privateer era with the likes of Victor Hughes , Langlois and Jean Lafitte .
The only acceptable story of red dead redemption 3: Pirate -> Pirate hunter, killed by an old friend or acquaintance. ( Also this is really cool history, thanks for making this!!)
I bet if you were born into a pirate life, being raised by pirates would be a horrible life when you think about it.
Plus when you get caught it ain't a good ending
Every single one piece fan after seeing Edward teach: 😱😱😱
In Antiga, a slice of pie is $2.35c
In Jamaca, a slice of pie is $2.57c
In Barbados, a slice of pie is $3.15c
In Dominica, a slice of pie is as expensive as $5
However, in Belise, that same slice of pie is only $1.80c

What about the Pirates that attacked the european coast until the 18 Century mainly from North África and t Ottoman Empire .? Its hard to find anything about it...and what about Portugal? They were the first not the Spanish...u dont even mention them ......
because to mention Portugal, it means do some research beside the cheap movies and novels
Portugal was not relevant at all in 18th century, decading into a spanish client state and getting fked in SE Asia by the dutch. And mate, fking read about the barbary pirates from wiki, its not that hard
The story is inspired from rais hamidou from algiers...... They just don't want to say it
@@TheRestInPeace Why? Spain literally barely appears in movies and series, and when they do appear they play villains and are given a bad image due to the black legend.
