I loved Such a Fun Age ; it was one of my favorite reads of 2023; it was juicy but deep at the same time
I love an honest review! 👌🏻
What a bummer! I love this new series. :)
I completely agree with you, about both Such a Fun Age (readable, but not especially well written) and Come and Get It, which I DNF’d because I liked it even less. Looking at the blurbs I should have loved these books, but I think Reid just isn’t for me, I won’t try her again.
You are more generous than I am--if I don't like a first book, I'm not likely to pick up the second unless I've heard lots of people I trust say they loved it. Reid's first book didn't interest me, so I didn't read it, and now you've spared me the time wondering if I should read the second one! I can't agree more with your points about writing realistic dialogue.
A lifetime to write the first book and a year to write the second. Not a surefire recipe for success in my mind. Hopefully, halfway through the writing of the second manuscript she came up with a good idea for a third. I enjoy a good campus novel and almost bought this one when I saw it on sale. Glad I held off.
I haven't read either Kiley Reid book. The subject of the first one didn't interest me and now I'm turned off the new one.
I'm hit and miss with Kristin Hannah, I like some, others are too formulaic for me. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it.
I remember in The Martian, the author had characters pinching their chins all the time. His next book as well. And no, I have no idea what it means.
I found the dialogue way too clunky in Such a Fun Age so with you mentioning that there are similar issues in Reid's sophomore novel, I'll probably pass on this. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
In the US most people omit the first R in Feb-you-airy 😂
(*^I’m not suggesting that’s right. 🤔)
@ I just saw a video yesterday which says it’s a quirk of American pronunciation of English: if a word has two R’s we tend to omit the first. Therefore “berserk” becomes “bee-serk” when we say it.
Historical Fiction is not a go to genre for me either. If I want to know something about a certain era I would rather read a non-fiction book covering that topic. I have also tried and failed to read Hannah. She is very popular with my friends but the two I started did not work for me. I am currently finishing Mrs. Dalloway and our next book group book is How to Build a Boat. TY for your as usual honest review of Kiley's book. A new book coming out I am looking forward to is James by Percival Everett.
Thanks, Britta!🌷Have you considered The List of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey as a possible buzzread?
“Nopity, nopity, nope”🤓
What is chin dipping? Is that a euphemism or is it literal?
'The Women'! I wonder what you'll make of it!
“Campus novel” would have stopped me from picking this up no matter how good it was but what a shame the hype was misplaced.
Eek! I feel bad for the author, but then she decided to write the book, send in the manuscript and signed on the dotted line to accept her advance so... Please continue this series!
The Book Riot pod hosts did not like this book either.
I agree, it was not worth the hype, It was a mess. I did quite like Such a Fun Age so this was disappointing.
I tried reading it and couldn’t get into it. I found it flat and boring.
I'm sorry that you didn't like the book, but I LOVE this series! Just love the idea of sharing whether the buzz is worth it or not.
Very happy to hear you like the series!
