If you'er crazy then I'm crazier. I started homesteading at 60. In the 5.5 years I've been doing this I have lost 25 pounds and am constantly hearing people say how healthy and young I look. I love being crazy.

Your not crazy, maybe just a little unwell. I also love hunting, fishing, camping and kayaking. I just turned 60 and joined a gym to stay in shape. Definitely something you don’t have to do. At this stage in my life I also enjoy a few more creature comforts. I camp in a trailer with heat and AC. I can cook over an open fire if I want, or I can use the gas stove. You can always make things easier, but you’ll never know yourself without testing yourself. It simple physics. A moving object tends to stay in motion. Just keep moving and doing. You’ll figure it out.

I hear you Shawn. I retired at 62 after 30+ years as a nurse. The nursing job really did a number on my feet and back so I'm not in the best shape. BUT, I have 7 acres, Pecan Grove, horses, and I'm working outside, solo, every day. I think I'm stronger now than ever. I can pound a t-post with one hand now. 5 years ago, I could barely lift the pounder with two hands. So, yes, it's hard, we're always getting older. Yes, maybe it's crazy, but I'm happier now than ever, and certainly much more capable. Yesterday I used the table saw to build sides for my raised garden beds. Feeling finally 'at home' can offset years of age! I plan to keep at this until I drop, hopefully outside.

My Grandma homesteaded 5 acres up in Tok Junction, Alaska at 62 and built a log cabin. She had always been fit but that was quite a challenge and she asked for help when she needed it. But she lived there and loved it without indoor plumbing or bathroom until she passed at the age of 86. She did have electricity and an oil stove. I lived in Fairbanks and used to drive to her place on vacations from work and loved woodworking and helping her. She built all of her furniture, cabinets, etc. but never liked doing the finish work (which I loved) so it was fun for me. I so greatly admired what she had accomplished but never believed it was something I could have done myself. It's wonderful to hear your story and also Shawn's. It's rare in life when we actually get a chance to do what we really want to do and what makes us feel happy and satisfied with ourselves.

Stop questioning yourself- it’s only because of the school ‘reunion’ that made you reevaluate in light of your classmate’s eyes. You’re the envy of the vast majority of us who don’t have the choice. You’re a truly rich man now, and it has nothing to do with money.

I can tell you from experience, that when you don't use muscles, you lose them. As we get older, it's extremely important to stay active because the body is changing so much due to hormones etc. that it becomes more difficult to find motivation, drive & energy, the longer one stays inactive. I sincerely believe that the key to longevity is to stay active mentally, physically and spiritually. I suspect that the majority of people would love to be living the life style you've chosen. Keep on keeping on. Wishing you and yours all the best.

When I was forty-one I had sort of a mid-life crisis and sold all three of my businesses at the beginning of "Desert Storm" and went to sea as a janitor (wiper) in the engine room of a steam powered merchant ship. Everyone thought I was nuts too. It was the best job I ever had although it was a very hot environment . My main job was mopping five floors of metal decking, cleaning, machine maintenance, painting etc. I loved it because I was never bothered by anyone criticizing my work. I knew exactly what they wanted from me since I used to pay people to do the same things around my shop and warehouse when I owned my construction businesses. I made much less than what I had before but I was fine with it since my house was paid for.and it was a good union job with good benefits. I got to see exotic Asian ports and get paid for it. Problem is? I messed it all up by going to Maritime School , becoming an Engineer and getting all that responsibility back. I had forgotten why I went to sea in the first place.....To avoid being a boss (I had previously had thirty-five employees). I went to sea until I was fifty-five and then retired so I could be a stay at home dad. I'm Seventy-four and live alone now. Do I regret any of it? Not one second of it even though lots of friends fell by the wayside when I was gone all the time. I guess a lot of them couldn't understand me giving up my successful company's to go gallivanting around the world. lol You do you Shawn I doubt you will ever regret it!

Shawn I just wish I was 50 years old again . I turned 73 last December and last year in January 2019 my wife and I bought small cabin and five acres of woodland . Our plans are to sell our home and build another smaller home here on this five acres . We’re clearing the underbrush along the creek bottom that’s right behind our cabin . It’s very thick with vines and briers and we’re clearing it with an ax , nippers , and a machete . We’re raising a big garden and some fruit trees on the place . Of course we’re not off grid at this age . We have electricity, and running city water . Most everything we do is by hand . The reason I’m writing this is to encourage you in what your doing and don’t let age bother you . You’ve got many years to fulfill your dreams . At 73 years of age that makes me 23 years older than you and I’m still very active just a little slower lol 😂 !!

As I really listened to this video for the 2nd time, this is what I heard and felt. Not only is it your passion, but you have needed to do this for a very long time. Do you value what others do, or do you value and appreciate everything that your hands build? Your excitement and pride shines thru in everything you do. You have not let the wilderness beat you, you are taming your portion of the beast and doing RIGHT by the environment. Here is the thing.....it doesn’t matter what others think outside of your wife and the girls and Callie. If I didnt have to take care of my 80 year old father, I would be your neighbor! I am tired of people and their thinking they are entitled to this or that. Appreciation is where its at. You are also showing people what they could achieve or take from parts of what you do, and giving them the knowledge on how you do it. Education, motivation, and demonstration proves that anyone of any age can do what ever they set their mind to do. We are only held back by our mind and its thinking this or that cant be done. You chuckled when you thought people think your nuts, but that chuckle to me was you saying one day you too shall realize that you need to depend on yourself because our world is changing. Please keep up the great work! It’s appreciated!

Hi Shawn, I'm sixteen and have been watching your channel since the near beginning. Before seeing your work I was the ultimately academic concentrated individual. Always putting school before myself and getting amazing grades out of it. Nevertheless my academic achievement never fully satisfied me, there was always something missing. Then I discovered your channel which opened my eyes to the world of nature out there, the range of exiting adventures that can be had in the wild which I was never taught, living in a small English village. I noticed that the people around me in school and elsewhere live fairly robotic lives of work, every one of them utterly tied into this modern philosophy that investing time and energy into making their lives more and more comfortable and convenient, nevertheless I already understand that this is not where happiness is found. You have opened my eyes and now I try to self teach myself through your videos and others alike the ways of nature, in an attempt to push against the ways my society want me to go, to get closer and closer to breaking out of the chain of cyborgs, my generation at least are being forced into.

Thank you for every step you take towards a common sense future which supports survival AND THRIVAL. Our homestead is lovely, it has been a great practice ground...now we are gearing up to acquire land on which a small community can live out this lifestyle. People who love to be more social can pool their bucks and buy land together. Small earth conscious communities are popping up all over the place. Perhaps not everyone is ready to build everything up alone, but if people are willing to work together, solve conflicts, pool talents and resources, beautiful dreams can be manifested. Also, it is likely that land will be more affordable with the economic downturn expected to follow the wake of this Corona craziness.

I didn't retire from my job with a very large multi-national company until I was 65. I really liked 95% of my job and it involved lots of travel both internationally and in my home country, so I saw lots of the world, some very interesting places and allowed me to do things that I would not have been able to do in a "normal" 9 to 5 type job. But once I retired it allowed me the freedom to do what I wanted to do rather than what someone else wanted me to do and eliminated all the corporate rules, stresses, etc. It allowed me to explore new and different things to do places to see (mainly in my home country) and ones that I have always wanted to do, all work as a volunteer and it has been the best time of my life, so far.
I must say that I could not have done this as a married man, but I have been a sole parent for almost 40 years, so when the kids left home I was able to take on the "roving" lifestyle. No one else has come into my life, so the current lifestyle only needs to satisfy my needs rather family and partner. So do what makes you and your family happy.

Shawn, I hope you read my comment, as it is quite heartfelt. I began watching you build your cabin a while back, and your quiet methodical ways reminded me so much of my dad, it was calming to me.. My dad was a carpenter and worked much like you do, with a lot of your same mannerisms … so, thank you. You present such a good example of how to lead a quiet life, and still pursue your passions. I am now 70, almost... and, yes, I chose a path less traveled, as my mom needed my help at home, so, with little skill or knowledge, I went from living in a nice apartment a few blocks from everything I could want, to a small town where most raised their own food and baked their own bread. My idea of house maintenance was to call the rental office before leaving to teach school and coming home to a completed job with a nice note on my door … my idea of gardening was taking the dead plant (yes, there was only one) to the dumpster on the way to Kroger's to get a new plant.... I had a habit of watching This Old House and Victory Garden on Saturday mornings, but, really, that was the extent of my knowledge and experience. My mom, the local hardware and nursery, and garden club taught me the rest. We started cleaning and ended up remodeling this old house and landscaping the outside so my mom would have a nice view from every window... who knew I would live here the rest of my life? Anyway...if there's anything I quarrel with you about it's when you're going to get that screened in porch finished so your wife doesn't get eaten up by flies and mosquitos this spring/summer....lol.... hope you have lots of lemon balm growing around... it does the trick for me.. just a handful rubbed on the bite and the swelling and itching go away immediately. It grows like a weed here, and for that I'm grateful. Anyway... love your meals … I kind of cook that way myself… So, no, I don't think you've lost your mind, rather, that you have chosen to be an inspiration to many... me, for one. And not just you, your wife, as quiet as she is, is also an inspiration to me.. Thank you much.

His cardiologist gave him beta blockers, instructed him to walk every day **keeping his heart rate below 120 bpm**. He started at just 10 minutes of walking and slowly worked up to over an hour, and over time he was walking five miles.
Another cardiologist suggested he start taking ubiquinol (high end COQ 10). His own cardiologist agreed.
He was restricted from lifting anything over the weight of a gallon of milk. He also reduced to his salt intake in food and made a point to eat a better diet.
In two years his heart was pumping the same amount of blood as any normal person. He continued his walking regime, although he got less careful at maintaining the bpm. That was 16 years ago and his heart checks good every year.

You did invite responses, or I would likely remain silent, as usual.
There is a lot of stuff here Shawn. This could have been 3 or 4 separate videos Several things strike me, to wit.. Many go through the same questions at the same point in life...40 thru 55....incorrectly called a mid-life crisis where we ( I did this ) buy sports cars we wanted but we could not afford as a younger person, or, we ( I did this ) begin doing something that convention denied us because of the financial or social restraints imposed by society, or we ( I did this ) prove to ourselves that we remain useful and essential pieces of our world by doing things we have always been able to do, and thus prove to the world that we are an essential part of nature's plan, even as we grow old.
My personal goal was to achieve a position in life where I was well fed, had a unencumbered roof over my head, a hot shower when I wanted one, and the time I needed to watch others attempt the same success. I did the work when I could do the work, and now I get to enjoy the fruits of my labor. If those goals identify me as mentally unstable, I welcome the moniker. Personally, I believe the rest of the world is losing their mind.
You are so eloquent when you reveal your thoughts. Honesty shines through in everything you do..... God Bless you and your family.

I turned 51 in February. I would love to live a life like yours, Shawn. I'm a photographer and a knifemaker, and you can see how both those activities can easily morph into an off the grid lifestyle. After this lockdown, when we are allowed to travel again here in the Philippines, I'm going solo camping for a while. Perhaps that will be my opportunity to think things through. Your videos has been an inspiration to me and I'm sure many others out there. You are not going crazy. Your life off the grid is the way to go. That is the normal thing to do. We have been misled to think that city life is the norm.

passing 38 this year, drained by 15 years of corporate life with stress, deadlines, meetings, commuting, I'm thinking to move on the countryside, buy a cottage and a big land and to be self-reliant and far away from the world...

Number 1 reason we age and slow down ... we stop moving. I sold my business at 48 and started over feel more alive than ever. I drive a Tractor trailer across The US. You are living your passion and are in better shape . I’m turning 55 in February and never felt better. Keep moving in the direction that moves you and your journey at the end will feel completed.

You made the right choice. We are 70 and homesteading ourselves. We haven't built from the ground up by hand like you have but we purchased a pole barn building and 5 acres in the mountains of Northern Idaho about 30 miles from the Canadian border, that was unfinished. You mentioned you gave up certain recreational activities for this life style. We did also. We were avid mountain bike riders and skiers. We are totally off grid as you are. People have thought we were crazy at our age but we would not go back to the city life we had. Everything we do we are planning for the future as we get older when we can no longer cut the firewood we do now. We have installed propane for heating, refrigeration and stove, although wood is our primary source of heat. and a wood cook stove. We can most of our own food and have built a raised bed garden. We also have solar for electricity. Composting toilet and grey water system. We have a pond with fish and a creek. Life is so much better and less stressful even though the work is much harder but physically good and satisfying. You are definitely doing the right thing and we really enjoy your channel.

Having just turned 50 in February, last year was a very introspective year for me. Not really on purpose, but it's where my head went whenever I had time to myself. If things had been different I could have seen myself doing something similar to you. But life changes plans on us. I physically couldn't do most of what you do, now. Injuries from rock climbing and working construction did their toll. As I've mentioned in other comments, my wife and I have plans to get the heck out of the NYC metro area. How far and when are dependent on incomes, housing markets, and family obligations. I've worked hard at having a stress-free but happy adulthood, compared to financial debt and drama of the 20's.
We all have to make what we can out of our lives and always be really to adapt. 10 years ago we were getting our house ready to put on the market so we could move to Maine and bang, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with alzheimers... moving was put on hold... and holy crap, that was 10 years ago!
I'd keep going but it'll turn into one of those old man rants about time going by faster as you get older...
We're all a bit nuts, some of us just keep from getting our hands stamped.

God Bless you for taking care of your mother-in-law. Anywhere would have to be better than NYC. I know it is vibrant (when functioning). But the traffic, people, are all too much in that 24 hour/day life and push push push.

We're actually about an hour and a half south of NYC, (exit 82) but we have lots of traffic from commuters, tourism, etc. Where we live used to be quiet and the county was one of the lowest crime rates in the state...not anymore. Most locals that remain call it Staten Island South. We're looking toward Maine or possibly the Canadian Atlantic Maritimes, but a lot of ducks are going to have to get in a row for those plans.
