  • I feel that I have now mastered the motion color effect and that this is my best outcome so far. Don't get me wrong, I plan on making more remixes that lean into the glitchy aesthetic using this effect as part of it, but I think this is the most "eye-candy" version I will make.
I put a lot of effort into the subtitles. Let me know if they are off at all.
My previous attempt, which had much worse tracking and therefore much less color: • Bad Apple!! but the mo...
    Code (ever-changing): github.com/nimaid/bad-apples
    4K Video and Subtitles: archive.org/details/bad-apple...
For those who care, in the first iteration of this video, I used a dense optical flow algorithm to show the movement of the edges in the video, with colors corresponding to the direction and the brightness corresponding to the speed. I initially planned to simply make the "movement only" effect, where only the moving edges were visible. But once I got that working, I realized it wasn't very fun to look at alone, so I layered it over the source video with the blending mode "difference".
This second iteration expands on the concept by observing that there is a tradeoff between detecting fast/slow motions and the corresponding blurriness of the motion field. The larger the "window size" is, the larger the motion that can be detected, but it will just be a huge fuzzy region that is roughly the right shape. The smaller the window size, the finer the motion it can detect, but the motion is detected in smaller regions, leading to a less blurry image with sharper edge highlighting. Choosing one window size made some elements look good, but then the tracking on other elements wouldn't work. And often things that changed sizes (like the petals) lost tracking as they moved, because the speed of movement was changing.
My solution was to actually run the optical flow calculation 7 times for every single frame, each time with a progressively larger window size. Then, I layered each of the 7 motion frames together with a lighten effect, which produced the robust composite motion tracking image you see overlayed onto the black and white video here.
Speaking of the video, for this one, I myself used AI to upscale the source video from 360p to 4K (waifu2x), and also to interpolate from 30fps to 60fps (RIFE). You can download those upscaled files at the archive page I linked above.

Thank you for the lyrics in the subtitles. A while ago it was all just gibberish to me, then I came across a lousy translation that just felt wrong. This is, I believe, how the lyrics are supposed to feel, and they do hit me.

I hate to break it to you, but those are the lyrics "translated" for Cristina Vee/JubyPhonic's english cover. They've become really widespread, but in all reality, they're anywhere from almost correct to a VERY far stretch. I'm not going to analyze the whole song, but here's the first line, just to show how far of a stretch it really is.
      Japanese - 流れてく時の中ででも / 気だるさがほらグルグル廻って
JP (romaji) - nagareteku toki no naka de demo / kedarusaga hora guruguru mawatte
English (accurate) - even in the midst of flowing time / look, listlessness still turns round and round
EN (JubyPhonic) - Ever on and on I continue circling / with nothing but my hate in a carousel of agony
So... She somehow turned listlessness (feeling as if you don't have any energy or care in the world) to hate and agony, that's something.
Just for reference, in my opinion, the only "almost correct" lines are as follows...
0:59 (same as 2:37), only "Maybe it's a dream" (literally "am I dreaming?" in Japanese)
1:30, only "am I hurting? am I sad?" (literally "Am I huring now? am I sad now?")
3:02, only "If i make another move" (literally "If I move", it's repeated twice, not sure why they didn't.)
3:06, only "Then it would all fall apart" (literally "Everything will break", it's repeated twice, again, not sure why they didn't.)
I feel like this was a product of it's time (June 2010 or earlier). A huge lack of good Japanese translator programs (the lyrics were wrote by an Irish guy who, as far as I can find, likely never knew Japanese) means that a huge amount of the errors I see in the lyrics come from what you'd see in bad translator apps, as well as from literally no involvement from anyone that speaks either language. Not going to go into detail, as this is already long enough for a few hour long video essay on "Everything Wrong with Cristina Vee's Translated Covers", but my point has always been...
That translation is not even close to accurate. It's often worse than a mile-long game of telephone.

@@TeslabladePlaysMC oh, that's a shame, but I see your point... thanks for writing up all that, still; can you refer me to an accurate translation?
