My home town is Chicago, and I am very familiar with Mr.Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge dealership, and in 1966, I remember the news paper adds for these cars. The add stated that only 50 cars would be available, and if you wanted one, act fast, as it was a one time deal. Special order cars were available from other brands, most notable, Nicky Chevrolet in Chicago. Their deal was 427 Chevelle's and later, Camaros. These dealers were always trying to out do each other, leading to some really fast cars. I later worked at G/S Dodge, and was there when the first Hemi Darts came in. Working there was a great time, and could tell some wild storeys about those days.

From Roselle, lived in Rockford a few years ago and Mr Norm was operating a custom car shop downtown. Don't think it's still open but was told that he lives in Florida. This was about 8-9 years ago. 🐾🐶🐕

I have seen the original Mr. NORMS ad for these cars. I believe he called them street burners. They were equipped with the 426 wedge. I have this ad saved on one of my computers.

My dad had a 66 coronet 440. I loved it when he took it out on the feeway to let the motor breathe as he put it. He would say dont tell your mom I did that.

1966 either had 383 or hemi, no 426/440 wedges.
Super Survivor!!! High school friend of mine had the same year with a 440. Beautiful green in 1973. It didn’t survive the failure to lift soon enough during street hot dogging. Miss one of my best buddies and a very special Mopar.

I was staying at a hotel off the I-65 Rensselaer exit about a year ago and seen this car on a trailer parked at an adjacent hotel. Being a Mopar guy all my life, I had to stop and take some pics. I also owned a Mr. Norm's car, a B5 blue '71 Charger R/T that's unfortunately rotting in a junkyard in Utah. There's a video about it on CZcams. But congrats on your mega rare find!

I stripped and rebuilt a Radio Flyer Wagon , in Plumb Crazy. Pin-striped it with Gold trim, and added Left, Right and rear Roadrunner Stickers on the Body. Damn that was a fly Vehicle! People loved it at the Airshows and rallies.

It’s interesting because what we’ve learned is all the cars that got the wedge were made with left over motors none of them were new

@@darryladams519 sorry man, I have a totally original 65 Coronet 500 two door hardtop with it's 73k original 426 4bbl./727 cableshift automatic in it. Chrome unsilenced air cleaner and matching chrome valve covers. Turquoise engine paint and yellow/red maintenance decals on the aircleaner.
My Dad bought it new, and it's never been out of our family. It's real. And it's the last of the line of factory offered packages with the 426 wedge. Unless you want to count the 65 Dodge Monaco that my Granddad bought new with the 426 wedge in it. So, 65 was the last year of the 426 wedge being the biggest cube big block, because our 66 Monaco 500 has the new for 66 440 4 barrel in it. Still have all 3 cars.

A great find, and that build sheet is a treasure. I'd heard that some 426S cars were built for Mr. Norm, and anything with Mr. Norm provenance is pretty special. The original owner can tell you how the engine was dressed out, pretty much like a 65 I would guess, and what were the emblems, was it wearing the 383 call outs?
Actually the emblems were the standard 66 V8 emblems and we have discussed with him a little about the wedge he said it was painted Hemi orange

All I can say is “wow…cool!”. I know it’s not cheap to do so, but this deserves to be restored back to 100% original. This is worth it
The most original we’re looking at going is probably putting a wedge back in it don’t get me wrong I believe the car was beautiful when it was new but I just feel it’s a good survivor the way it is

Even tho the original 426 wedge was blown up if u find a 426 wedge built around the same as the original that would be the next best thing. I'd leave the 383 badges if in fact it came that way factory & talk about sleeper!! Lol! Good luck on the restoration!
@@paulsecondine1484 eh it’s not so much gonna be a restoration me and my brother have no intention to change the car (unless we find a cheap 426 wedge) but we do plan to fix things like the broken arm rest and some other small things

Awesome ! Started driving one in 82,have lived up through them, started with a 68 charger rt 440 4 speed to a 2002 duranged with a 413 roller that flate lines at 3500. MOPAR
I would say someone buggered-up the front at some point & found a front clip in a junkyard. I had 3 500’s w/ the 3884/4bbl in the 80’s - they were plentiful back then.
The original owner hit a patch of ice driving it home from work all he had to put it back together was a green 66 500

We know the original color all the EE1 blue you see on the car is original paint
Unfortunately the only photo we have from the past the car was already turned into what it is now but I’m still glad to have it
I grew up during this time, and you could in the 1960s order any engine package you wanted while having the VIN code represents something completely different. You could have a Hemi put into a car that was marked as a 318 or even a slant 6. And the reason was is that your insurance would bill you based on what the VIN number claimed the engine was. This was the era where the insurance started billing you more for the power output of the engine. Chrysler's special-order program wasn't set up to defeat this, but the way the special order program was applied in the factory Matt the bass car, in this case the Coronet 500 which always had a 383 2 Barrel, was converted to either a Hemi engine, 440 engine, or in this case of 426 wedge. Even though it actually shows 426 engine. Because it's not an R code, I believe that the Hemi was an R code, but I may be mistaken in that. It's been a long time since I knew this easily. But I was enamored with Chrysler products pure raw power that they could put out. Usually 50 to 100 foot pounds more torque than the similar-sized Chevy or Ford and usually a minimum of 15 to 20 hp more of actual output. And it was that pork that made the difference. Everybody looks at horsepower numbers and nobody thinks about the torque. The problem that the Chryslers had was that they had a forward sump on many of the engines and when you accelerate that fast all the oil comes out of the sump and the engines would starve for oil. Because of where the steering linkage went. When they went to the forward bearing linkage, you could put the oil pan on it with a sub towards the rear. That's a huge issue with the Slant six. Which can actually be built up to some respectable numbers. It was originally designed to be an all-aluminum engine after all. And was the first successful one ever put into an American production car that I'm aware of.
In 66 the Hemi was an H code as well as these 426 wedge cars but yeah I’ve heard about the insurance company’s jacking up prices over these cars because they were “race cars”

I had a 66 Coronet 440 (model, not engine) 4dr, with a 361 cubic inch B block. Just a 2barrel carb. I bought it with a spun rod bearing and rebuilt it myself. I worked at a Chrysler Plymouth dealership and had access to shop manuals and tools. It had the 727 torque flight transmission. Lots of low end torque and quick off the lights in traffic. A baby 383. Good car.

Out in California, I bought a 62 dart. With a 413 wedge , 2 4 barrels, push button Trans, from the original owner..

Agree a restoration would destroy the life story of this survivor, I have my dad's 79 Malibu classic, with the high output v6, an factory 3 speed on floor, ordered that way.always garage and never repainted.

Eh to each their own I get a lot of people see it as one that needs restored but at least while I own it we’re going to leave it as a race car that’s what it has it’s history as not as a stock car
Truthfully the amount of excitement I got when I got in contact with the original owner and his son was through the roof
Just maintain it . If you "restore it " it's just another restored car. In this instance it looks pretty solid and worth preserving
The car has very minimal rust on the deck lid and a small spot on the drivers quarter but is super solid
@BackWoods Performance that's awesome. Especially for a Mopar. I have a friend who owns a 68 camaro and he built it in the 70s with a L88 and a thm400. Street raced to beat hell. Recently he restored it because it was an original L78 4 speed ss car. Unfortunately it seemed to loose its soul and became just another restored car. Granted it's a beautiful restoration but it just ain't the same anymore

We plan to leave it the way it is for now I think it’s earned it’s battle scars we will get it running again that’s already in the works
My brother had a 66 Coronet 500 , 383 , 4 barrel , 4 speed . He bought it in 1973 , LOTS of snot !
I love Dodge. The Cornett and the sport ferry is my favorite. Beautiful Car.
These kinda things are always intriguing. What's always amazing (or maybe not idk lol) is these oddball order cars many times are noted as such almost immediately. That even when the paint was still burning off the exhaust, some guys were making mental notes and filing them away. A factory wedge in that body from MR Norm's would have created a bunch of thought in the drag racing environment. Finding them (The guys that recall the car) has always been the challenge.
So you're kinda lucky to have the social media wave to help find those that would remember it. A whole bunch of one off 50s cars just missed that media window and have been lost to time. Only because the old guys aged out and aren't here to talk about it.
I agree with leaving the as is condition - except for worn out and ratty. Original and ratty is just that no matter what it is or where it came from. Some interior work and other details is what I would do myself. It'll be interesting to see the story when you get it all together. Thanks for sharing
We want to avoid doing to much the interior is in great shape other than it was dyed back in the 70s or 80s and has 1 small mark in the front seat and 1 small mark in the back there’s also some knuckle marks in the bottom of the dash where it used to get raced
@@BackWoodsPerformance67 I agree. I'm more about things like the armrests, the chrome piece they hang on, window cranks etc. Everything you touch and use like that. Maybe a carpet kit. You don't have to go whole hog to make things a whole bunch nicer, and it's still just fixed up/repaired - not restored. Think of the difference between a so -so original paint car with nice bright fresh looking chrome vs. the same so -so paint and rusty or painted bumpers. That same paint perks up with new chrome. Or an all original car that has rattles vs. a similar one that doesn't, little things can really perk up an old ride. Ultimately it's your car and your money - others have a problem with that idea but it's the way it is. It's a neat piece - glad someone has it that appreciates it.
@@oldschool6345 stuff like that is a good 90% chance we’ll do it we plan to enjoy the car and leave it a survivor but that doesn’t mean we can’t improve the state of somethings

I had that exact same car back in the 70s , I thought it was a 383 but it had power like it was bigger. You could not set up the timing to a 383 or it would not run very good. Yes a cornett 500, 1966 4 speed. It had bucket seats and a center console with a chrome shifter and 8 track.
My parents had a '68 Coronet '500' wish they saved it for me love the Dodge Coronet's.
I had a 1967 Cornet R/T 440CID w/727 automatic. Sure bought alot of rear tires for it over the years. I hope you finish this car you have. It deserves it.
I Owned a 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T , 426 HEMI. It was Red , with Flame job. It was a MONSTER ! B/M SHIFT KIT, 4/11 GEARS IN THE BACK. My wife wouldn't even ride in it. We called it ANIMAL . NO ONE WOULD RACE IT. WISH I HAD THAT BACK. 😎
Thanks for showing us the car! I owned a 66 and loved the way it ran with a 383 & 727 auto trans. The car however had 440 badges on the fenders so I never checked the VIN against he motors number. In 82 I was splitting with my wife ( at the time) and the car got flooded to the roof. I gave the car to the x and she sold it! Wish I had it today! 😂
You sure the trim level wasn’t a 440? That’s the same case with this one we’ll be doing a more in depth video and kinda an analysis of the car discussing why it’s got 500 badges.

Note: in 1966 B bodies you had to go from 383 to Hemi.
No 426 wedge or 440 wedge was available, as regular options.

It’s not charger quarters they’re just cut 426 wedge wasn’t a standard option on the cars Mr Norm special ordered a limited amount of these cars with the Wedge motor

I ran across a '66 Chevelle in the late '60s that had 427 flags on the fenders. Further research revealed it was a dealer-ordered race car. The motor was long gone & had a small block. When I saw your video I thought it was 1 of those which it was. It had been wrecked & repaired is all.

I just watched your video, ive got a 67 plymouth belvedere 2 with paperwork from grand spaulding dodge sold used in 1968 . al smith sold it to the old couple i got it from the widow drove it weekends still has under 80k miles her husband insisted she keep the car when he went to vietnam he said dont ever sell my baby, he never made it home he was killed she never sold his baby he spent a lot to buy it ! more than if he had bought a new car ,she told me and i later discovered why ! my car was traded in 68 with a blown motor but had a lot of rare options. turbine bronze being the color, because mr norm only sold dodges new but also sold other cars if they were performance or rare option cars . the man who bought it saw the car fell in love with the color it also had a gtx interior for some odd reason gtx was basically just a belvedere option in 67 so he got the 67 plymouth belvedere 2 cause he liked its looks even though it had a blown motor. mr norm did the sale this way intentionally ! basically this made him
a manufacturer he let the guy put his choice of replacement engine and add some options and let mr norm be the manufacturer of this creation the guy waited 2 months from may to july to finally pick the car up he had the following done (dick landy industries) dodge built super stock warmed over 383 for it ! crank hp was 465 hp 520ft lb.on dick landys dyno ! mr norm then added a few things, it made 460 hp to the wheel and mr norms crew tuned the car with a set of holley 3 barrels on a cross ram added a hi flow fuel pump ignition upgrade i guess he did fuel pumps and ignitions a lot ! it made a bit beyond hemi power when it left mr norms ! i found the motor in the chicken coop it has dli stamped into it ! super stock , has set screws to lock the main bolts in , holes for cam lifters , lifter bores are larger than stock, oil ports drilled , block smoothed over, the shop that sold her this crappy 318 it has now with 340 heads and an edelbrock 4 bbl. told her that small block was every bit as good as her landy 383 !! yeah ok back 3000 miles ago in 1999 they tried getting her to give the landy 383 to them ! she said ohh no my husband paid a lot back then for that motor im going to keep it with the car, mabe some day someone will make it all one again ! they were pissed from what i heard and the top end of the motor was "stolen" from the shop yeah stolen with two 950cfm 3 barrels on top of a cross ram intake ! really nice people and it had 1968 906 heads fully ported and polished by a professional back almost 60 years ago. they had 440 distributor in it ! used a roller bearing shim to adapt a rb distributor to a low deck ! ive been told gas porting didn't exist till the 90s well somebody should inform dick landy cause the pistons have a slight dish and 8 gas port holes roughly .100 from the edge all around! the cam came out to be .280/.280 duration 104 lsa 545-525 ! id like to find the cross ram and 950s what scumbag steals from a 80 year old lady who just wanted to enjoy her husband's car ! they just figured wtf shell never use it just take it and tell her it was stolen ! its only worth more than the whole 318 we just charged her almost 4000 for !! i have all the receipts what con artists! a story like hers is way better than the black ghost and the belvedere could spank the ghost !

I was 19 when I bought a '67 Coronet R/T 440 Magnum engine 4 speed from a co-worker. He was a salesman for a large tree service company and needed something a little more economical. I paid $ 1400.00 with a bank loan , co-signed by my boss. ( my parents wouldn't co-sign for me ) It had 20k miles but had raw gut wrenching power. I traded it to a Chevy dealer a few years later for $ 100.00, towards a new '73 Chevy 1/2 ton pick up truck with 4-wheel drive. Still to this day I loved that Dodge.
I remember the story about the GSS. Norm tried to order ine and Chrysler said it couldn't be done....so Norm's put one in, fabricated heat shields, etc....then drove it up to Chrysler and showed them. The engineers had to come out and look it over.

Interesting story.... back in the mid 70's I bought a 66 Coronet with a broken 318 poly automatic.... already had a wrecked 68 Super Bee 4spd , so swapped the 383 , tranny and 3:25 posi into the Coronet and was back in business.... I would have loved to have a 426 Wedge though.

My brother had a dark blue and white 67 coronet 440. He let me drive it once because I let him take my brand new 1980 yamaha 650 special. He was supposed to have it an hour. He had it all day. I loved that car.

just a headsup,but most older mopar guys know Galen cannot be trusted,still has peoples money and their papers,vin tags broadcast sheets and other stuff too that hes never sent after ten years.....he was also caught shelling for a used car company....you can check any of this by googling.....every time you kept saying his name in the vid,i would wince...there are Way more TrustWorthy researchers online now,and a lot will help for Free.
i would consider some of the foks at the Bbodiesonlyforum to be the Real Knowledgeable mopar guys nowadays.

We did go to the B Bodys forum actually the 22 page forum post surprisingly only 1-2 guys on there even had a clue these cars existed which turned into a large argument of 2-3 guys claiming it’s a 383 car and we’re lying about the whole deal
The 3rd coronet 440 with a 426 wedge was destroyed in my old neighbor’s all mopar junkyard in moline Illinois back in the 90’s.. he had it there for years, since the late 70’s.. he had some clown running his yard after he got sick with lymes disease, and that guy was dumping oil into a creek which ran through the property and into the rock river and the epa came in to do their checks and busted him.. they shut down the yard and came in and started crushing.. the yard was loaded with mopar muscle cars from the 60’s and 70’s plus had 50’s -90’s mopars .. there were Hemi cars, 6 pack cars, wedge cars, rt cars, even a real aar Cuda that was wrecked on river drive in moline in 71.. everything got crushed.. this place was one of the coolest junkyards in the country. His sign had a 70 duster funny car that was Don Schumacher’s star duster on it with the actual sign that said A-1 auto wreckers under the car.. I have a few emblems and remnants he had in his garage that he gave me over the years, one being one of the coronet 440 emblems that were on that 426 mr norms car.. you can say I’m full of shit if you want but before the epa came in I was at his house and he and mr norm were in conversation about said car. Norm had someone who was going to come buy that car and a couple others like the aar, but they didn’t arrive before the epa came in and started crushing.. it’s a sad sad story..
That’s something we’ve discussed is how many of these cars were probably parted out and or crushed just due to it not being a 68-70 or a “performance model” as some people would say

My step brother had an all original '66 Coronet in purple with a 383cid.
Does it have the 426 Street Wedge exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes? Which rear axle came with the 4-speed 426?
We can’t answer on the manifolds and exhaust pipes it’s got headers and a 383 in it now the owner swapped it after he blew up the wedge
It came with an 8 3/4 for a rear axle

My 67 Coronet 440 has a 392 . It wasn't an engine option in 1967 but it should have been .
392s are slept on I got a buddy I’ve been trying to convince to put his in his front engine dragster

I KNOW 426 wedges are hard to find but in this case it would be worth the effort to either find one or build one for it.I know it would be extremely expensive and I cant remember with 100% certainty who it is, but I THINK it is (or was) EGGE MACHINE that used to build all new correct replacement engines with with all the proper engine parts casting numbers and almost accurate serial/VIN type numbers to identify it as being from a specific car with one alteration to the numbers and that was an addition of a letter or symbol that identifies it as an all new reproduction engine built ss a correct restoration replacement which is used when it is an extremely rare car. It is not going to be frowned upon as badly as if it had for example a 440 put in it yet at the same time it is clearly identified as a reproduction replacement.
We’ve got some leads on wedge motors and we would love to put one in it but we’re also not going to pay $1000 for a block and a crank (that’s not what they actually go for just exaggerating a little) this car would have never had VINs on the motor or transmission 1966 and 1967 at least were still too early for a partial VIN

I never forget a car this car used to street race on Broadway in Gary Indiana back years and years ago it was one of many that were considered the Dodge guys this car a Daytona another purple 70 Challenger and a purple Dodge charger

I bought a 1971 challenger from mr norm new it was supposed to be a 440 6 pack shaker hood slap stick and a Dana rear end with 488 gears well here is the question on the front left side of the block from the factory was a tag that said 413 cid now remember it was supposed to be a 440 and on the dyno it put 550 hp to the wheels after more checking I found out it was one of ten that was ever built, I talked with mr norm about five years ago and he said that it was one of the specials that he had special ordered and if I still had it the worth now would be between $ 300 to $400 thousand well when the gas prices soared I sold it for chump change, what a- a hole
This is far more common than you might think. My dad ordered and bought a brand new 66 sport fury that was supposed to have a 318 poly but actually came with a 383 and it had 440 super commando badges on it. We didn't find out it was really a 383 for a couple of years after he bought it.
This car is a bit different from that this car isn’t a factory mistake it’s just a car that shouldn’t exist

I've got a 1969 Hurst Olds that only around a thousand were rebuilt to Hurst Company that took out the 350 rocket 442 and replaced with a 455 Hurst engine

make me wonder, many many years ago when cars were just cars one of the many ,mopars i had was an all original 63 black on red factory sport fury convertible 383 4 speed posi car that actually had a 413-4 bbl motor instead, although that was the only pre 67 mopar i ever owned, that car was flawless and every inch of it looked as original as all the post 67's i had owned, after seeing this video it makes me wonder if that 63 night have been a one of one special order car..........

By the time this car was ordered would it not have been ordered with a 440 Magnum? Seems like the 426 Wedge would've been out of production for several years.
1966 was the Very last year of the 426 Wedge the 440 was available (albeit in C Body’s and wagons and large vehicles) it still hadn’t been proven to be a performance motor yet

So have you checked to see if it came with a Dana 60? 4 speed 440s and Hemis only came with them and i would think the 4 speed 426 wedge did.
These cars didn’t have that apply all were 8 3/4 with 23 spline 4 speeds

I’d love for it to be a big money car but it’s still a 66 Coronet at the end of the day a lot of people don’t like them

If somebody ever tried to buy it and would like to restore it that’s on them but we aren’t going to just give the car away like some want
My buddy has a 66 with a 440 with high miles she's a smoker rings I think he plans on tearing the engine down and doing a complete rebuild it's gold colored
