  • Video from my Big Pine Lakes 3 day backpacking trip in September, 2022! I think I say “WOW!” about 100 times in this video and for good reason! Lol
    I got to camp at the most breathtaking/perfect campsite I have ever seen for two wonderful nights and went on a spectacular day hike up to the Palisade Glacier!
    00:00:20 DAY 1 on the trail begins!
    00:02:32 Waterfall #1
    00:03:32 Lon Cheny Cabin
    00:05:03 Waterfall #2

    00:17:56 Palisade Glacier journey begins
    00:20:41 Beautiful meadow
    00:21:46 Look back at 1st and 2nd Lakes
    00:24:22 Palisade Glacier!
    00:28:20 Up close and personal!
    00:29:33 Rockfall
    00:30:27 Scrambling up and back to camp
    00:32:53 Marmot
    00:36:29 Back at camp
    00:37:21 DAY 3
    00:38:21 Cool time lapse
    00:39:54 Heading out ☹️
    00:41:51 Raining!
    00:43:54 Take cover!
    00:45:43 Almost done
    00:46:41 Back to the Manivan
    I know this one is even longer than my normal not so short videos, but this trip was the most epic experience of my entire life and I feel like I need every bit of footage included to fully capture my experience over those 3 days. It’s hard to put into words how beautiful the Big Pine Lakes area is and camping at Second Lake was a dream, especially considering that I got lucky enough to snag “THE campsite”, aka the best campsite there! This is my new favorite place and I will definitely be going back!

    Epic hike, spectacular scenery. I would skip the glacier though, too tough for me and I don't feel comfortable on loose boulder fields like that. However, it was quite interesting close up. Glad you made it up and back safely. I think rain in the Sierra is magical, as long as it's not a bad downpour. Love to see the low clouds swirl around the mountain tops. Thanks for a great video.

    • @ManivanAdventures
      @ManivanAdventures  Před rokem

      Hey, thanks for watching! I totally understand skipping the glacier for that reason if you don’t feel comfortable on that stuff, especially climbing down to the little lake at the end of it (a lot more loose rock here). I live for that kinda stuff though, so I couldn’t resist lol And it was incredible getting up close to it! I was more afraid of a rockfall coming down on me while I was in a pretty dangerous spot. Lol I also have to agree about the rain. Usually not ideal to me, but it made for a great experience and as you said, the clouds… love getting time lapses of them over the mountains. You aren’t the first person to mention the video quality and I love it because I do all of my filming and editing with just an iPhone 13 and a sometimes a GoPro hero 9. Lol Nothing fancy and I shoot in 1080p and 60fps. I actually just bought a new laptop for editing though and I’m going to start shooting in 4k/60fps for an even more crisp/clear picture. I also want a different iPhone model with better zoom, but I am so satisfied with the iPhone quality, plus it’s nice that I would already have my phone on the trail anyway, so I have no desire to get an actual camera at the moment.

      Hey, thanks for the kind words and feedback!
      I am still very new to this and have actually started experimenting with music in my newer videos, but I’m still trying to figure out my style. I personally really like some parts with music, like the driving montages for example, but I also like having parts with no music. I definitely think I overdid it on a couple videos after going back and rewatching though. Lol I am still trying to find that good balance.
      Not sure if you have ever watched Kraig Adams, but I love the way he uses subtle background music in his videos. My thought is to mesh that with my own kind of vlog style editing if that even makes sense. Lol The video I’m editing right now has very little or very subtle background music, other than a couple driving montages and the intro/outro and I think it is turning out really well.
      I highly recommend going to the glacier too! It was incredible in person, but second lake was probably the highlight of the trip in my eyes. Just so incredibly beautiful! Oh and that log crossing was actually just me playing around by the creek just off the trail lol
      Again, thanks for the feedback and for watching! Happy hiking!🤙🏼

Lol Of course you never know what can happen, but as long as you keep your level of awareness high and keep your bear spray on you, shouldn’t have an issue. - Random New Balance fleece jacket
      - Warm long johns, extra pair of warmer socks, and a fleece lined beanie for sleeping
      - BearVault BV500
      - Vargo Dig Dig trowel
      - Teva sandals for camp shoes

      @@ManivanAdventures - Nice list - thanks, I absolutely love the Flash 55 pack! Now if I can get my total pack weight down another 5 lbs so I am not overloading it. Still working out my gear issues.
      I attempted Whitney in '79, near then end of what I call the medieval times of gear, especially packs and tents. having to turn back at the top of the switchbacks when lightning came up on us and we went back around the overhang and tried to wait it out to no avail. We scurried down as fast as we could back to camp and by that time had run of time to try again.
      I started getting back into hiking/backpacking in the last two years a couple of decades slaving at a desk. A year ago I started planning to do Whitney again this summer but our highest point is only 5k - but I realized during my recent trip to the AZ/Grand Canyon that after living at sea level for the last 40 years that I can no longer handle any serious altitude. Only after 5 days did I start to feel "normal" and we were camping at only 7500'. Fortunately there are so many more places to explore at lower altitudes - Stay safe!

    • @ManivanAdventures
      @ManivanAdventures  Před rokem +2

      @@laidbacktraveler2580 I feel like gear always seems to be a work in progress. There isn’t a whole lot I can do to go lighter at this point without giving up a comfort I’m not willing to give up though. I like being light, but also don’t mind carrying a little bit more weight for extra comforts at camp, especially when relaxing at camp is usually my favorite part about backpacking. Good news is that my gear is already light enough that the Flash 55 carries the weight just fine. Will be a true test this weekend in the Wind River Range to the Cirque of the Towers. Should be low 30s, possibly into 20s at night, so I’m going to need to pack a couple extra layers and my other quilt.
      Sorry to hear that you couldn’t summit Whitney and about your altitude issues. I’ve lived in the midwest my entire life up until this year and strangely have never noticed any effects of altitude. Have yet to go above 13,294’ though (James Peak in Colorado), so we’ll see what 14,000 does to me. I’m 34, so maybe it will start getting to me more as I get older…. but I hope not. Haha
      Hopefully someday you can find a way to tackle Whitney, but like you said, definitely plenty to explore at lower altitudes too!

    Are there any permit requirements for the overnight camping in this area?

      For overnight trips, yes. You need to get a permit for Big Pine Creek North Fork. You can reserve them up to 6 months in advance I believe at Recreation.gov. I think they release more permits 14 days out too, in case you don’t snag one when they are first released.

      @@joshrahn7535 Happy to help! It is an amazing place and permits go fast, so make sure you get on the website first thing in the morning as soon as the permits are released! Good luck!

    how was the mosquito situation?

    • @ManivanAdventures
      @ManivanAdventures  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I was there late Sept last year and don’t remember mosquitos being a problem at all. Went back this year in early Sept and I think there were more bugs. I don’t really remember though, so it obviously couldn’t have been bad enough to hurt my trip if there were lol
