What Happened to Batman: The Movie?

  • No matter how many different iterations of Batman there have been over the years, some folks still see colorful words explode across their memory of the caped crusader: BANG! POW! CRASH! For as dark as the adventures of Batman have progressively become, there’s no forgetting the brief era when the universe of “Batman” was a cartoonish, campy riot, filled with tongue-in-cheek dialogue, scenery-chewing performances, and some very snug costumes. Comic books aside, it’s hard to believe that, for years, the TV show was essentially what people thought of when they pictured Gotham’s secretive hero, until of course 1989, when Tim Burton forever altered the way we view the Dark Knight.
The 60s TV show ran for three seasons on ABC, but the world got an extra dose of “Batman” soon after the first season concluded with “Batman: The Movie”, essentially a super-sized episode that brought four of Batman’s most famous foes together in one zany, candy-coated package. It contains some of the weirdest, wildest moments you’ll find in a movie about the Caped Crusader, so slip into your favorite spandex suit as we tell you WTF Happened to the very first “Batman” movie.

Same here. I watched this show, and movie, so much as a kid.
We didn't have the animated series or Keaton movie until later, this was Batman as I knew him until I was 10.

Burt Ward also had a brief cameo as Dick Grayson walking Ace the bat-hound during the crisis on infinite Earths event on the CW network. And I am surprised it wasn't brought up in the video that the Adam West version of Batman got an animated movie featuring Julie Newmar doing the voice of Catwoman and went up against Two Face who was never on the show.

Adam and Burt are why I’m a huge Batman fan today finding the series in 1989 during the hype for the first Michael Keaton batmovie and instantly falling in love with it I didn’t see the movie until a little while after and loved it as well with the series becoming my all time favorite television series and movie to where Adam would become my hero and favorite actor to where i may know more about him then most people due to watching every interview I can find about him and I have seen his movie staring Adam west multiple times and the series was a mid season replacement premiering on January 12th 1966 during the 1965/1966 television season instead of the 1966/1967 season like originally planned and the one season syfy series the black scorpion would pay homage to the movie by having 4 of her best villains team up to try and defeat her with Adam playing the villain the breathtaker

I was born in Europe over 2 decades after the original series aired and this version is still nostalgia central for many people my age. Even though we didn't really grow up with it, but rather the Cartoon Network gem Batman - The Animated series. That series is my childhood, but the original will always be special. Pure, unadulterated fun.
The absurdist campiness of the original made it unique and loved. It is still referenced endlessly in modern media both with quotes and visual jokes. It is one of those shows that became part of the culture.

Ward’s concern for his face had nothing to do with an inflated ego. In filming the first season of the show he was sent to the hospital three days in a row. Once when the seatbeltless Batmobile in a tight turn had the door fly open and him fly out, once when the crew used explosives to blow up a wall for Batman to break through and save Robin but the wall was too sturdy so an unsafe amount of explosives were used and I forget the thirst time.

Robin gets a third of the pay Batman did. Wow. Still, $35,000 in 1960s, when a house cost around $8,000 in the mid-west and $20,000 in Van Nuys, CA, was not bad.

Calling it "camp" demeans the results of back-breaking labor by suggesting that it's so corny, easy, or bad that ANYONE can duplicate those results. William Dozier's Greenway-Greenlawn Productions and its Repertory Company just made it LOOK that way.
