  • The tachometer on my 1983 Goldwing GL1100 started making a whining noise, but was completely functional. I was hoping I could get away with just lubing up the cable, but it didn't fix the sound... so I took it apart and lubricated the shaft from the inside with penetrating oil. It sounds like it it fixed the problem.

This is great video and it made my repair much easier.
I didn't pull my tacho apart I just removed the two nuts and undid the cable. I turned the tacho over and dropped a bit of gear oil into where the cable goes and turned it about a bit with a small screwdriver. Put it all back together and the whining is gone. I suggest you try this before pulling the gauge apart as it only took 15 mins to complete this task.

Wish i would’ve seen this before taking my tach apart but all good. You just used a bit of engine oil down where the cable goes and that’s it?

@@MannyFBaby Yes worked for me. I thought there was two sides to oil from and choose the easiest way first if it hadn't worked then I would have dismantled it.

Very interesting, Today May 13 2022 my 83 interstate GL-1100 started making that exact same noise. I just took it to Chets Honda in Quincy to have the struts rebuilt. I have to go back in June to rebuild my carbs. I am anxious to see what is making the metallic buzzing sound I would never have thought of the tach.

  • @productreviewswithgdub7861

Interesting you said tach as mine did start bouncing a bit on my way back about 100 plus mile ride from shop to home.

I had the exact same problem on my 1983 GL1100. I followed these steps and now it works perfect ! Needle is much steadier as well. Thanks for the tutorial !

Same exact sound on my 1982 wing. 35,000 miles. Glad for this video. I’m going to try drops in the hole first. This humming sound is quite an eye turner (streaky sound) when stopped at red lights. My full dresser GL 1100 is already enough of a vintage eye turner…I don’t need any more attention. 50 mpg I love it!!!

Glad to find this because i didnt realize how rare/expensive the chrome factory cluster or gauges were comparatively until recently.

Great video very helpful. Cautionary note, check the drive where the cable enters the tacho for driveability and maybe spin over the tacho using a drill before attempting to dismantle. Look in the light holes to observe the condition of the tacho internals as it is a job to open the sealing crimped band and then get it back together as there is a sealing rubber gasket that requires compression on rebuild. As the guy says got it back together, not perfect. Mine is now the same as his, a bit bodged and applied glue to the band to stop hopefully any contamination.

This fixed my problem, however I didn’t open it I just poured gear oil through the piston and that was it, now my speedo is working perfectly

Tach Cable... Usually it means that the strands are frayed and it's about to snap. Had the same problem on my speedo cable. Ebay has them for less than $25.

I thought it was just a cable needing to be plugged in tighter or replaced to fix this issue. Lube to the rescue, I suppose.

Just pull the cable and shoot a light penetrating oil up into cable drive area of instrument. Once a year or so. Speedo same thing. 1983 gl 11oo. 230000 miles

What a life saver. I just need to go another 30km tomorrow until I fix this. What could happen if this isn’t fixed immediately?
