  • In this video I show how to record a very very quiet wristwatch using an extremely sensitive black high-gain Metal Marshmallow contact microphone.

Additionally, because the gain is so high there is a lot of background noise and I show how to remove it using spectral subtraction in reaper.

I want to use this for hearing Marching Bands in the press box that don't have windows that open. I judge bands and when I am in a pressbox that doesn't have windows, I struggle to hear the band on the football field. How would I amplify this so I could hear it?

Hey Dr. Krzyzaniak, nice work on the Marshmallow! I heard that Rihanna used one on her latest album. Do you think it would be useful for safe-cracking? Asking for a friend.....

@@MichaelKrzyzaniak The only trick will be teaching Rihanna to crack safes (saves??)... She has many skills, but dunno if that one is under her umbrella yet.

What is the micro usb for? Any chance you’ll be updating to usbc soon?

Michael, I just bought the Metal Marshmallow Normal gain Mic from Amazon. And I watched this video. I am amazed at the sensitivity of the mic. I bought this based on an online recommendation that I saw on a blog post. I am going to use this on my Monochord. I am very excited to see how it is going to sound. Can you give me a feedback for the best placement? Should I place it inside the resonant box or just tacking it to the outside box is enough? Also am assuming the a USB charger with the right input will work to charge. I received the mic without any charger. Lmk.

Hi, apologies for the delay, I just saw this. Yes, the mic charges with a standard micro USB cable which is not included. I have never tested it with monochord. I don't think it will matter whether it is inside or outside, but I might try to put it somewhere that is roughly equidistant to all of the strings.

Is there a sticky putty you recommend for these mics? I'm not having much luck getting them to stick to things. Thanks!

      I'm having the same issue

For horizontal surfaces I use regular white tac / mounting putty. If I need more strength I will use double-sided tape in combination with that -- this holds strongly enough that I have pulled the veneer off of finished plywood trying to remove a mic. I show the products I use here: czcams.com/video/V-SWFjRpiMg/video.html

What is the audio device between the microphone and the computer? Could you connect the microphone directly to the computer (without that intervening device) and still record the sound OK?

It is a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 usb audio interface. Yes, you could just plug the mic directly into thee computer. I'm in the habit of using the interface because it gives me more control and allows more complicated setups.
