You are right about Ohtani's English skills. He can communicate with other players or coaches on the ground because they are moving in the same direction. But I am sure Ohtani doesn't have any idea about the banking system or even how to register an account online in English. And you guys are right about accessing a banking account. Ohtani allowed Ippei to take care of making a payment of laundry, grocery, phone, water, and power bills. Ohtani is the type of person who doesn't consider work and life balance but desires to concentrate on anything in his life on baseball. So he needed someone he could trust, and Ippei was the one whom he believed in. But it was not. That's why he said he was sad and shocked at what Ippei did to him.

When I worked as an interpreter, I had to assist the players on just about every aspect of their daily lives. These include: opening bank accounts, taking them to DMV to get licenses, and setting up utilities. I also carried their check books on the road for clubhouse dues.
Assistant stolen money from their rich boss is more common than you think. And Ippei is like that to shohei, he's not only interpreter. He handling his business everyday.

I'm Japanese, but I want Americans to know about this new translator. I feel like he only translates about 80% of what's said. For starters, he uses "obviously" a lot, but Shohei never says "obviously" in Japanese. Also, Shohei didn't use the word "willfully" in Japanese. I think a real professional translator should have done this. Shohei's explanation in Japanese was perfect and left no room for doubt. Shohei's explanation in Japanese clearly and concisely shows that Shohei has nothing to do with gambling and that Ippei was telling a huge lie to everyone around him at the beginning.

Excellent analysis, Jeff and Anthony. It's not hard for me to imagine how Ippei could have gotten access to Shohei's bank account. All we know about Ohtani is that he is ver focused on baseball, especially as a two-way star. It doesn't leave much time for the day-to-day stuff during the season or even after. Ippei does everything for Shohei. They're best friends. People do not understand that their relationship is so much more than just an interpreter. They're like family. If you look at history, then you'll understand that 4.5 million is actually the low side of thievery regarding sports athletes, unfortunately. Another thing too. It could be a very real possibility that Ippei handled bills, etc, since he does so much more than just being an interpreter since he drives shohei around as well as does stuff for him.

When Shohei was still a pro in Japan making 1.5 million a year, he had his parents manage his funds and they sent Shohei $1000 a month. This is because Shohei wanted to focus on baseball and training, and his lack of interest in money. It hurt him this time but he'll learn.

I don't know for sure but it's easy to guess that Ippei helped Ohtani open an online bank account, created his username and password and stored that information somewhere both of them can have access to whenever they want.

    • @KYDodgerfan
      @KYDodgerfan Před 5 měsíci +1

@EddieHersh To me, it appears that Mizahura was much more than just an interpreter to Ohtani. He was more like a personal assistant. In that capacity, it’s not a stretch to presume that Mizahura opened bank accounts (yes, plural) in Ohtani’s name and with Mizahura as a co-signer on those accounts.
That way, Mizahura could write checks and send wire transfers at his pleasure. We think in terms of single accounts because that’s terms that we know from experience. Personally, I can’t fathom the concept of millions of dollars in multiple accounts, because I’ve not had that issue in my life.
This wouldn’t be the first time someone betrayed someone (athlete, artist, etc.) else. I think back to the time Billy Joel was cheated out of money by his father in law. It’s sad, but it happens when one trusts the wrong person.

Instant translation is extremely difficult. Context and language structure is important. To get remotely close, it requires hearing and translating instantaneously like they do at organizations like the United Nations. In this type of press conference, if Shohei is reading the text, the translation could have been printed and read so the accuracy would have been pristine. If Shohei deviated from the text at all or spoke on his own, it would start to lower the accuracy. It would be interesting if someone published the word for word translation into English for us to read.

It is indeed a difficult job. And Ippei was really good at it -- which makes it even more tragic that he would screw up so badly.
The new guy wasnt bad. It was pretty clear that he was feeling the pressure and sticking pretty much to a word-for-word quote of what Ohtani said. Unfortunately that takes away a lot of the context and nuance. What Ippei did well was to translate the underlying "humor" and "personality" of what Ohtani said, which isnt always the same as a direct translation of what was said.
Hopefully this new guy will loosen up and give us better "non-direct translations" when the pressure of an MLB investigation isnt so intense.

When he was in Japan, his parents managed his salary, and he didn't know how much he had in his bank account because his parents sent him only 800 dollars every month. He spent only a small portion of the 800. In the U.S., Ippei, in stead of Shohei's parents, was taking care of Shohei, like a baby, especially because Shohei only wanted to concentrate on baseball and become the best player. Furthermore, he is not good at English. He can handle simple daily conversations but cannot understand or espresso his views on something complex in English. It's much more difficult to do things in a foreign language than people imagine. Many of my colleagues in Japan are from English-speaking countries. Although they have been in Japan for ages, they are still unable to function well in Japanese society. Many of them are so ignorant due to the language barrier, and their Japanese spouses and friends do everything for them as if they were babies. So, I cannot blame Ohtani.

And even if he had access, doesn’t he check his bank accounts? Maybe he couldn’t read an English based bank web site? Although numbers are a universal language (-$500,000 is the same in any language)

Ippei Mizuhara has been telling two contradicting stories and we now know he's been lying about his job and education. So who would want to believe him over Shohei Ohtani? Accusations should be directed towards Mizuhara and not Ohtani. As for wire transfers I can think of several ways in which they may have been executed by someone other than Shohei himself - but that's for the investigators to ascertain.

I've never seen a real victim of a crime have to read from a script written by Attorney's! Real victims don't need a script because what happened to them is seared in their brain. I believe the original story, which was Ohtani was helping his friend by paying off his gambling debt. But when his Attorney's told him that that was illegal and against MLB Policy he could face severe consequences. The entire story changed to the Interpretator stealing from him. Nice try by Ohtani, but only Dodger fans are buying what he's spewing!!
