Don’t use overdrive when pulling anything you’ll get better results and better fuel mileage

@@joshlower1its for normal driving to get better mpg. when you tow, you should not use OD on hilly areas. OD is fine on flat grounds.

@@ImJoeTheCeo So, pardon the novice question then but....
If I'm towing 11K lbs on flat ground then the OD can be utilized with no issues.
However when going up grades of any real note, OD should be in off position correct?
1005 F350, 116k original miles, E4OD will be gone through to include all mods for pulling things around.
      CAT and AIR both deleted.
Based on I'll presume your knowledge in things, I'll presume the truck can yank 11K 5th wheel around with little to no issues? Or should I expect to run into something else?
Cooling system completely re-done with dual trans coolers added on ( I'm not a fan of burnig down transmissions).
I look forward to your detailed reply.

My 1986 OBS F-250 with the 460 did it with 3 cylinders at 60psi. The others were at 100 and 125. Right now it's got a new 7000.00 dollar 468 in it with Eagle H-Beam Rods, ICON Forged Pistons and 1969 429 DOVE-C Heads on it. The Intake is a Weind Stealth. I put a Comp Cams .564/.574 Lift Cam in it with 226/234 degrees duration at .050. 111 Lobe center. I just got it running and broke in the Camshaft. Now I'm putting in the 2nd valve springs. The best part of it is that the Truck only has 74,455 miles on it.

My 76 F 250 Hiboy I call it "The Beast" has a beefed up 460 when I started towing 8-9000 lbs it started breaking things . First my U joints I had to go with a bigger custom made drive line with bigger U joints then the it broke the rear diff. Here in So Cal going up the grape vine doing 60 pulling 8,500 lbs.trying to keep my foot out of trouble.

Sure sounds like a beast! What did u do to beef up the 460? A month ago or so I followed my buddy up the grape vine in my 460, he has a new HD2500 Chevy with a 6.4 or 6.2. Try as I might he kept pulling on me. I need a bit more power for sure! Still made it up tho no issues just a bit slower.

It was a few years back. I took out the stock 390 out to install the 460 (not offered in that year/model) it is a 4 bolt main 060 over, can't remember what pistons , stock crank. with roller rockers and cam (can't remember the duration and lift) I had the stock heads gone through a lot of porting on the exhaust, a Weiand Stealth Dual Plane Intake , Edelbrock Performer Series 750 CFM Carburetor, MSD distributor and a multi spark discharge module also a set of nickle plated mid length headers. So far It has broken my motor mounts , U joints and differential It has a pretty calm Idle though but it will light up 35 inch tires and it's suicide past 85 mph (old 4x4 suspension) it gets 13 to 3 mpg

I watched this video and immediately started having deja vu. That sure looks like highway 152! Then I saw the sign for San Luis Reservoir and it all made sense. I haven't been down that stretch of road for 12 years, but it's still very familiar.
I think I have a very similar truck, but I haven't done any heavy towing with it. As others have mentioned here, turn off the OD, especially on grades. You might have to slow down a bit, but the truck won't be struggling as much. Mine has the 4.10 rear end. What's your axle ratio?

I am about to embark on a pretty crazy schedule of 460 swapping my 03 crown vic. Shooting to have a turbo kit ready for this summer. Plan being to tow my fun deck hurricane or some jet skis. Will be going through a bunch of mountain hills, so I am curious if the turbo will help. What transmission do you have?
I have already sorted the braking kit out, so I will be able to stop with whatever the build is rated for.

That's how they burn up, pushing od button to off is the same switching it to tow haul mode on a modern truck, it increases line pressure, firming up the shifts and it downshifts as you slow to a stop adding engine brake effect, along with locking out 4th gear

  • @billybutcher9912

Possible reason for a jump in RPM while only gaining a few MPH… transmission getting warmer. Hydraulic oils do not like heat. Torque converters are less efficient… engines spins faster with less torque moving to driveshaft.
