  • Welcome to Rangeless! In this episode, we take you on a journey to the bustling city of Singapore, where we had an eight-hour layover in Changi on our way to Vietnam. Despite the short time, we managed to leave the airport and explore some of the best attractions the city has to offer.
    Our first stop was Gardens by the Bay, a nature park located in the heart of Singapore. The highlight of this attraction was the Supertree Grove, where we were amazed by the towering tree-like structures covered in vertical gardens. We enjoyed a leisurely walk around the grove, admiring the stunning views of the Supertrees from the ground. It's worth noting that visiting the Supertrees is free of charge, making it an excellent attraction to visit on a budget. We highly recommend visiting Gardens by the Bay to anyone visiting Singapore.
    After Gardens by the Bay, we headed to Chinatown, one of the most vibrant and culturally rich neighborhoods in Singapore. There we visited a traditional hawker center, where we sampled some of the local food. The flavors were incredible, and we couldn't get enough of them and the prices were very reasonable.
    Finally, we visited Jewel Changi, a nature-themed entertainment and retail complex located at Changi Airport. The beauty of the indoor waterfall and the lush greenery left us in awe as we watched the Skytrain glide past before catching our flight.
    Overall, our eight-hour layover in Singapore was a huge success given that we only really had about 4 hours of time spent traveling and going through customs, etc. We would highly recommend visiting these areas to anyone who has a layover in Singapore or even for those who are planning a trip to this beautiful city.

    Soon Kuey is made with shredded Bamboo shoots, turnips and dried shrimps for its fillings. The sweet dip is sweet soy sauce meant to go with the "kuey". This is a traditional Teochew (one of the major chinese ethnics in Singapore culture) snack, it is a diminishing recipe as it is tedious to make, and youngsters do not fancy them anymore. Glad you tried them!
    As for wanton noodles, it is a Cantonese ethnic food but of course we all eat them regardless of our backgrounds, there is also halal version. The soup at the side is for drinking before the meal to warm up the stomach, and after to wash down the meal too. You can also have the noodles in soup version too. We take alot of hot soups here as we believe it is good for digestions, and also it helps hydrate our body in this humidity.
    Hope to have you back here soon! Do try Bak Chor Mee, a very local Chinese noodle you can never find in any other Chinatowns on the world! And don't forget our local malay food!!

    Singapore 🇸🇬 is not your typical South East Asia city that you have visited i.e. Thailand🇹🇭, Philippines 🇵🇭, Malaysia 🇲🇾, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Vietnam 🇻🇳, Cambodia 🇰🇭, Myanmar 🇲🇲 or even Brunei 🇧🇳. A combination of Modern Architecture surrounded by old British 🇬🇧 colonial buildings with lush foliage on the skyscrapers. Very westernized and contemporary yet still preserve the old rustic looks of old village settings. The price of accommodation and food tends to be on the pricey side if you dine on a mostly touristy flank. Go to hawker centers for cheaper options in Singapore 🇸🇬. There is plenty of it here and to approximate is beyond comparison. Hope you relish the adventure of staying here in Singapore 🇸🇬.

      Yes thank you for the advice 🙏 From our short time there, it seemed to us that Singapore is like nowhere else in the world. It is a beautiful city that surpasses most of the world's other large cities in terms of cleanliness, infrastructure and transportation and quality of life for its citizens.

    Eating soon kuey was common during my mum's time. I seldom buy it myself. You dip it into sweet black sauce and optionally, chilli sauce to eat it. It is a very traditional Singapore food. Usually ate during breakfast or teabreaks.

    You made good use of your time. You knew what you wanted to see within the time you had, and you made it to your destination. Good job with the navigating the train lines.
    If I were asked what one should do with an 8 hour Layover/stopover, and the travellers are new to Singapore - no experience with the heat, humidity, public transit, or our hawker centres - I would advise them to explore Jewel. This keeps them comfortable (no heat/humidity), and saves them the need to learn and navigate our public transport (not that it is that complicated). If they have heavy luggages, they can check their luggage to their next flight if possible, if not, there is a baggage check, but at a cost (about S$15 for up to 24 hrs, varying due to luggage size). They would then be free to explore Jewel, the Canopy Park (ticketed) with its various (ticketed) attractions - the Mirror Maze, the walking Net, the jumping Net, etc).
    Because it is a stopover, travellers may also be tired or in need of sleep. There are lounges you can use to refresh yourself (showers, beds) - prices will vary, and may depend on what benefits you have from cards or membership. One can use the 8 hours to rest and recover from the earlier flight. Or prep for the next flight.
    There are also food options, tho a local might say that the hawker-style food is not as authentic, or not as cheap.
    But good use of your limited time.

      Thanks! We weren't sure if we were being too ambitious trying to squeeze everything in in such a small amount of time! But it worked out in the end and we were able to explore Jewel also!

    • @angeluscorpius
      @angeluscorpius Před 7 měsíci

      @@austint5139 Jewel is open 24 hrs, but individual stores within would have their own operating hours. And the Rain Vortex (i.e. waterfall) only runs between 11 am and 10 pm. At 5 am, you will see a hole in the roof, looking like the Eye of Sauron.
