DANIEL since you made move to Davinci i started to see on other channels creators are also starting to switch to DaVinci .I only dont like very poor or lets say limited transition selection .I will tell you movavi is better .I havent seen Final cut pro as this is only available on mac

Fun fact: They are called "Film Bins" in a lot of programs because back when the old timers were editing the actual film, they would cut the shots out of the roll with a razor and hang them by the sprocket holes on hooks set up in a special rack. The shots could be very long... many feet of film... so rather than letting the film create a pile on the floor, the rack was built over a special bin that collected it. This whole arrangement was just called "a bin". Shots were organized into the bins and the bins could be rolled around and organized or pulled in as the editor needed. Editing back then was done on a desk sized contraption and the film was cut into pieces and taped back together with special tape that had sprocket holes. Sound was on a seperate roll running in sync, and it was basically magnetic tape with sprockets that was also cut and taped in sequence with the film. You could build multiple tracks of sound but you could never hear more than two of them together until it was mixed down with several machines all running the many reels of sound together in synch. Man what a pain it all was.
Wow! Great info. I came from a world of 2” magnetic audio tape (before digital was a thing) so I know quite a bit about splicing and taping to edit.
I always think of how all this happened before digital.
PS: The icon for cut is a razor here instead of the scissors we are used to :)
And before tape splicing of film with a machine, there was physical scraping off the emulsion with a razor blade, and using a 'welding' solution 'Film Cement' you would place the two layers of film together, usually using a sprocket hole alignment device, but often just by eye, and hold the two layers together until it set. If done properly these joins could last 100 years or more.

I'm stoked you are teaching Davinci! I began using it a few months ago and still have so much to learn. Unfortunately, most tutorial videos on CZcams are a bit confusing for me. Your method of teaching is easier to digest... you get to the point without overwhelming us noobs. ;)
Just play with it as you go. The best way is as you need to learn a new skill in the software, tackle it then. Been using it for a few years and I still do not know everything I could, and I did actual training with Blackmagic.

Daniel when you explain it, I feel like - I can do this. Your delivery is easy to follow and you explain enough so that we can talk ourselves through something while working with it. I like that you are giving just morsels of information about the many features (because yes explaining everything all at once get confusing). For us beginners this is awesome because these tips can help us edit a video and get some bearings in the program. We can try something else next time, but the more we use it, the more we can do down the line. Wow thanks Daniel! I'm using it for 3 years, and even though now I paid for the Studio, I can tell anyone here that the free version is more than enough to edit 4k videos for CZcams.
One crucial matter for quality is the Mbps value on the delivery page. It has to be set generously, actually way over the value that people can see here and there advised.

Also, the paid version enables GPU acceleration for encoding, rather than the CPU - as used in the free version.

I have to say..Ive been a photographer since 1984. I dabbled in video this year an was overwhelmed. Ive installed then un-installed this software at least a dozen times. Completely confused and frustrated. I watched your video, worked along side it and ive got to say..pretty damn impressed with my results. Thank you so much for doing this. Haven’t used Resolve much, ever, and will begin soon. This was very well done and will cut down on my random learning struggles. Will definitely look at more of your stuff. Logical. Not excessively fast paced. You pause once in a while to let a thought sink in. That in itself is exceptional.

You are the best teacher for beginners. Not overloading us with information. Just getting us comfortable and making the software seem so approachable. I think getting comfortable with a software is much more important then all the advance features. Once you are comfortable. Your curiousity takes over and you master the advance features so much faster .

Just ordinary moment in time type videos but I had gotten so frustrated with trying to learn software and editing, I just gave up filming all together. I saw one of your videos about DaVinci resolve and decided to watch a few more and see if maybe I could learn something this time. Well, I have been learning. You explain it a way that is clear and understandable to me. Also you break it down into small sections that are not overwhelming or intimidating. I have begun filming again and even though I’m not where I want to be in my editing, I know that with the guidance you have provided and practice, I will be able to get there. So thank you again for helping to reignite the passion and enthusiasm that I had when I first began filming moments with family and friends. I've been on DR a week and it's so frustrating. A screenshot on FILMORA is a simple click on the camera logo next to the time line vid, on DR I have to clear my calendar for 2 weeks.
@@FLASHAHOLIC_TV the Help menu rocks in DR. You're looking for freeze frame. In the help menu search field type in 'freeze' and DR will animate the control in the interface in a call out form. Probably the best help system in any software just uses a different terminology. DR is just as deep as Maya.
@Soaring Vision Images I can do both, I just wish DR was more efficient as I use screenshots a lot.
@@FLASHAHOLIC_TV one thing you could try is adding the folder your system saves screenshots to, to your favorites in the Media page. Use your preferred screen grab method for your system. In the Media page you can also navigate to this screenshots folder, right click "Add folder and subfolders to Media Pool (Create Bins)" and it will add this screenshot folder to your source files which you can access from Cut or Edit pages. You can then drag them onto the timeline without having to generate them within resolve.

So far, the free version has served me well. Davinci Resolve allows me to do all the basic stuff I need to breathe life into my videos. I'm not used to editing programs that have different pages. It was a minor adjustment, yet a welcomed one. I'm able to take several duplicate clips and make one compound clip which helps since my videos are an hour long (music playlist type stuff). It also helps me keep track of things because I get confused easily 😂
PS: tysm for showing us the "bin" feature. It's something I definitely need to stay organized and on track!

Because of the major thing that happened with Filmora dissing their lifetime users, and your recommendation of Da Vinci, i set off on a NEW troubleshooting path and created my first video with Resolve yesterday. I have one more video to make today so this tutorial here will be an even greater impact for refining and doing things better. Wish i would have known about DaVinci before I paid 80 bucks for only a years use of "lifetime" Filmora. I'm pretty bitter about that even though they supposedly backtracked. I don't know what they did cause i never looked back. Anyhoo, luckily my videos are extremely simple and the free download is more than ample. Now i need to learn how to make a thumbnail. I think I saw yesterday one can make a thumbnail in Resolve which is cool, also Canva is a place to make one too i think. Glad i found you Daniel, peace.

Great job, Daniel. I've been using Resolve (free) for about a year and learning along the way. I keep a notebook of specific things I find out and effects I may want to use again. I recently was editing a client video and noticed the subject had a big pimple on her forehead. Then I discovered that Resolve has a sort of "clone stamp" feature and I was able to remove that blemish. (And the client will never know LOL) Can't wait to see more of what you discover.
As a fellow content creator that used/still using Filmora for the past 3 years. It's been really difficult trying to switch to different editing software that is as easy as Filmora. While the issues that Filmora have brought up recently made it quite unreliable. it really is one of the easiest UIs to understand. and so wanting to switch to a different software definitely proved it's challenges, I'm glad to find that you've been making tutorials for Davinci Resolve (a software I was introduced to months ago, but was a difficult switch as it seemed like a large learning curve)

We totally agree with you. Various CZcamsrs are knowledgeable and want to make a flashy video. Every breather is cut away and you have to translate everything, understand and pause your computer in the meantime. You also have to follow the mouse. In that context, another tip for Daniel, our not a rockstar 😉, preferably use mouse pointer software. On request, we can send a website that can offer Tons of possibilities. I must add that I really like the fact that you just show us what we need to 'get going as a Noob.
Thats all we want to do at the start - just create a basic video. We can learn about all the other options and button later.
Superb video. To the point and no faffing. Reminds me of learning Photoshop, looks daunting at first but with simple instruction it becomes easier. Mind you after 20 years of using it, still only know a small part! No point of getting bogged down with every minute functionality if you're never likely to use it.
I feel like I might just need to try DaVinci Resolve out for some of my old video footage. Have a play around and see what I come up with. Small simple steps always lead to bigger and greater things.
I’m a fan of knowing what you need to know and not cluttering your brain with what you don’t.
The reason I trust DR to remain free and lifetime to remain lifetime is it isn't how Blackmagic makes money. They sell crazy expensive professional cameras and boards for Hollywood-level film and editing. We get to use DR so if we get to wanting crazy expensive products, we'll maybe buy theirs. I've watched many video editing lessons. This is the best I've seen. Daniel does not 'bog' you down with too much detail. He moves it to logical conclusions in each section, gifted instructor.

This is the orientation I was looking for. You have a keen understanding of the pace that noobs need on a proper learning gradient. Have you ever considered serving as a substitute HS teacher or adjunct college instructor? You would be as awesome in that context just as you are in this one. This one may pay better, but young students need you and it’s a form of service to the community. Have you ever done a TedTalk? That too might broaden your reach to a new audience. Love you!

@@Daniel_Batal 😁 Fair enough. I was also considering the problem of the “all eggs in one basket” thing, but that’s unfair of me because I haven’t a clue where your eggs are. But your varied talents can be translated into many baskets and that’s a luxury.
Amazing video. Really liked it. Optimized media was great for resolve 16,17, but for Resolve 18 blackmagic has created proxy generator, and it's an amazing tool that comes with resolve (both free and paid version) and has the simplest workflow. You can just select the folder where you've your high res footages and then the proxy generator will create proxies, and in resolve you can switch between the originals and proxies while editing and grading and the workflow is super seamless and anytime you add new footages to the selected folder, it will automatically create new proxies. Amazing video regardless.
The only problem with this tool is the limited codec support, at least on Windows. If your computer already struggles with h264 it won't help much. The exact same proxy generation is also available within Resolve, and has a lot more options for proxy formats that are much more helpful to those with underpowered PCs.

The edit page is the most familiar coming from other software but don't sleep on the cut page. I finally started using it and it makes so much easier for me to sort video clips I want to use, put them in the right order and cut to the right length. Then I move to 'edit', well... to edit them, but jump back to 'cut' when I need to make some structural changes to the project.
It really IS useful.
I definitely think it’s useful.
The problem is that people who have never used the software get overwhelmed with the features and layouts.
I really wanted to make a simple video that was focused on someone who just wanted to learn how to get from import to export without feeling they needed a college degree to do so

I found the Cut page was useful but it was one of Daniel's video that made me aware of the Deliver and the choice box of "Entire Timeline" or "In/Out Clip" which was brilliant for working with Cut page to put a long continuous footage into much more manageable "on location" style short clips

Nice video, simple and to the point.Only thing I would do differently is your Text resize and position. Don't use the settings tab, this can lead to the text degrading (if zoomed too far) and random clipping of the text. Use the "Size" control on the "Text" tab to zoom, and then go to the "Layout" tab and use the Center X &Y to position. This will stop the issue mention. Otherwise, great work! Keep it up and welcome to the Davinci Resolve mad house!
Pro tip! What’s the pixelation ratio for each?
@@Daniel_Batal Don't know the techy stuff, do know that the "Size" control on the Text tab works as though the text is a vector so smoothy resizes, where as the "Settings" zoom control is effectively zooming on a rasterised image, hence the degradation at higher zooms

Should really be using "Folder" rather than "File" when you're talking about the Bins cos you're putting files IN there, like you do with a folder
15:29 Keyboard shortcut for that is BACKSPACE, DELETE will ripple cut, BACKSPACE will leave the other clips in place.
17:25 Most of the time I actually use "Smooth Cut", I think it's just a nicer look for a transition, I usually make it quite short too though.
19:29 The little diamonds to the left of the undo/reset are your keyframes, so if you're doing a gradual zoom change for example, you would set your first zoom level, click the keyframe ◇ then go to the end of the zoom, change the zoom level and click ◇ again, now you have a gradual zoom change, BEAR IN MIND, once the playback marker goes past your final keyframe, whatever value you changed (zoom, position, etc) will stay at your last keyframe level, You can do the same for the other changes, like rotation/position/etc
30:27 This is where you can get into using "proxies" which are basically a lower quality version of your clips just for playback during editing, it doesn't affect the overall export. (Daniel obviously covered that too 🤣 )

There seems to be need from the community to explain every road sign on the highway instead of just showing people which way to drive.
That’s what I was really trying to avoid in this video.
I’m hoping more people just start editing with the software and don’t get intimidated by all the bells and whistles.
@@Daniel_Batal It really is the best free video editor out there. I wish you could hide the functions that are not available in the free version rather than that massive popup though, it's quite annoying and baffling why they wouldn't do that. The files it exports are also MASSIVE, I usually end up using Shutter Encoder to get a smaller version

Thank you Daniel for recommending this software. I should have been aware of it a long time ago so I didn't have to spend money on Adobe subscription. The UI can be a little bit tough to get used to at first but so far, my recent shorts were made with Davinci and the export was a great result. BTW, are you going to do small tutorial videos of how to edit a certain thing (like masking, green screen, audio effects) like you did with Filmora?

Hey Daniel, thank you so much for putting this video together and making the beginner steps so easy for me to learn DaVinci Resolve. I've imported my clips and been working on them, however, I have some overexposed elements in the centre of the video screen where the main studio lighting was too powerful/bright and my singer was wearing white and is overexposed. Everybody else on stage is fine. Colour is good. It's just my main subject is overexposed and I'm thinking it's because of the poor gamma latitude on the sensor that is used in my 7D Mark II. I've tried to pull the levels down using the 'highlights' features you showed here but to no avail. Are there any other settings I can use to reduce the overall brightness besides the 'offset' master? And does da Vinci resolve have a 'sharpen' option? Does 'superscale' have anything to do with sharpening video? First time use are here and would really love your input. I can use the rest of your videos to help me sort the rest out. Cheers.
Super scale will upscale your video file and it improve sharpeners but it also adds a lot of information because you’re raising the pixel count (resolution).
For overexposed footage, I’d get familiar with the Curves feature.
If it’s just one person in frame who is mostly overexposed, you could add a serial node with a area mask and invert it as to affect not the area in question

I downloaded and tried Davinci once, but as stupid as it sounds, I had no idea how to crop a video so my browser was no longer in frame and it was just the YT video I was reacting to, and that kinda put me off Davinci until I ran across you and Casey's channel who also does a full 4.5 hour tutorial on Davinci. This is a really good how to video for noobs I have had davinci resolve since 16 and just watching this video I have learned a lot, and you put it in a way that is very easy to understand without sidetracking, which most other davinci how to youtubers do all the time making it very hard to follow, so many thumbs ups for sticking to the basics and keeping it simple👍👍👍
I have watched 10+ video's on DaVinchi Resolve and how to use it and so far you are the only person that hasn't lost me with nonsense. Thank you for making a video new people can latch onto and excel from as new editors.

@@Daniel_Batal I was able to fully swap from Movavi over to DaVinchi today because of this video teaching me all the core concepts. I then extended on that having a baseline and after about 10 hours of messing with 2 minute clip and exporting it in various ways I’m on a roll and fast 🤘🏻

Daniel just wanted to say that I’m a Noob to DaVinci Resolve, I’m a retired IT Tech and was wanting to get into Video Editing but didn’t know which software to use. After some research I came across DaVinci Resolve. I at first was looking at Adobe Premier Pro because everyone over the years I heard it was the best. I didn’t want to pay a monthly payment to use software I like to buy and its yours, Old school if ya know what I mean. I came across your DaVinci for Complete Noobs and found it to be right on, not to heavy but simple enough to understand. It’s a pro level editing software which means it has a steep learning curve and high system demands.
The upside is that once you get comfortable with it, you’ll never need another software.
