I actually really liked Iron Flame! I was engaged the whole time and could not put it down! I gave it 4.5 stars

Agree with the slow beginning of Iron Flame, but really liked the rest of it.

I fully agree with you. It was too long, too boring, and a lot of things just 'happened' to be very convenient. I listened to the audio, and the narrator really got on my nerves so that didn't help either. Fourth Wing was at least entertaining, this one suffers as just a filler book. And on top of that it almost feels as two seperate books. Part 1 could have been a book on it's own if fleshed out a bit more. I'm disappointed. Such a highly anticipated read and it ends up being 3 stars. Such a shame.

I enjoyed fourth wing even though i thought i wouldnt. If was far far too long in my opinion and Violet really bothered me. But it had good bits, so i will read the next one in the series and hope Rebecca tighten it all up a bit😊

I read this and got confused initially, so I had to stop & reread Fourth Wing. The second time I started again, I enjoyed it. I forgot who her friend group was. I enjoyed reading this book for what it is, and yes, their training is the real killer, not the enemies. Andarna is my favorite.

I struggled the same way and I have this feeling that’s reminding me of my relationship with the blood & ash series. Where book 1 was amazing and then each book after I really struggle through and struggle with the world building. And I continue them and have fun with them but don’t fully understand or enjoy things?? And I’m hoping maybe this is just second book syndrome here.

I felt the same way about Iron Flame, there was so much repetitiveness with it and I kept going from engaged to bored and then back again. I gave it like 3.75 because I can't quite fully justify a 4 when I found over half of it boring

I loved The Fourth Wing! And I agree about Dain. He just annoyed me at how much he pushed Violet to be a Scribe. I feel that Violet was testing herself, see if she could be a Dragon Rider.
I also believe Dain was very jealous of Xandan. ❤😊

I read the audio & had a lot more fun, because the narrator made it engaging and the action sequences were done very well. Teddy Hamilton only narrates the last chapter, so that was a bit of a let down. I do suspect that if I read it physically I probably would have had similar reactions as you.

I swear somewhere said he’d have such a bigger part in the audiobook for this book!

I agree with you that the first part was long and not as entertaining. I borrowed the audiobook from my library and the book is over 28 hours long. There were some aspects that I liked and some I didn’t understand. I would like to have heard and explained what happened to Xaden at the end of the book. Maybe it will be in next one.

I totally spoiled Iron Flame for myself. I was probably around the beginning of part 2, and I was on AO3.... I didn't think they were going to have a last page spoiler in the first sentence of a summary. And I was just like, oh, okay, cool.
When that moment with Ridoc happened and then a later one with Sawyer, I was screaming. I was like: Omg, REBECCA!! Trying to do that to two characters in one book, how could you?!?! I was dying. Thank god they're both okay.
Yoooo, wait a second. With those spoilers at the end, I didn't even think about that? But I think Xaden was like 17(?) when the rebellion happened. So he was probably betrothed as a teenager? And he must've resumed whatever agreement/treaty stuff his dad had going on with Poromiel once he bonded to Sgaeyl, probably more likely in his second year though when he joined leadership. But that is a good point that I hadn't really thought about. They make it seem like him and Liam were fostered together throughout their whole childhood or something, instead of only for a few years after the rebellion.

This was a tough one... On the one hand, I was entertained for most of it, on the other, many parts were juvenile and it felt a little too YA at times (ahem I'm prob not the target audience at 44 years old). I didn't love the push and pull of Xaden and Violet's relationship here. She didn't forgive him for keeping her in the dark about things but she didn't outright fight with him on it and it was getting frustrating and repetitive. This was especially pronounced when she speaks to her mother in the middle of the book and certain things come to light and she never confronts Xaden about them... Is it realistic? Yes. Do I want to read about it for 400 pages? I'd rather not. Additionally, Xaden being protective and threatening people to protect Violet immediately AFTER she took care of business in a life-threatening situation was just embarrassing and awkward... Dude, wouldn't it have been better to strangle the guy BEFORE or WHEN he put her in danger and not AFTER?
I did love the development of the dragon world... I love Andarna, I love the whole Tairn-Violet-Xaden relationship. I did in fact like Cat and I actually ship her and Aaric (she does want a crown).
As for the last pages.. it wasn't a complete surprise for me, although I initially thought it was Violet who would go through with it but I'm excited for the next book in that respect.
For the next book I predict - AariCat relationship, Drake will come in and possibly date Mira, Xaden's mother will make an appearance, where is Aetos senior? is he going to be the real baddie? I wish I'm wrong but I believe Xaden will run away and Xaden and Violet will be apart for maybe half of the book... but he'll learn stuff... You gotta trust the process.
