      I am a run and gun doco guy working in the humanitarian space - Africa, Middle East etc - mainly for RedR Australia. I also have an XC10 which is just awesome as I look just like a tourist...lol. But the C200 is also awesome. The two cameras work really well together. Thanks again. I love your work and really appreciate the sharing of your experience. Useful info from someone with real world experience. Cheers.

    Been following you for quite a bit now, since your first C200 vid. Have really taken advantage of your videos so, the least I can do now is show my support via your luts. And of course, I also get some luts haha. I will be using them soon since I am currently renting the C200. Also, I plan to watch your movie on Amazon really soon. Keep up the good work my friend!

      Hello, if possible, it would be very interesting to see a more advanced color grading workflow with the C200 footage, with HSL, power windows, tracking, to see how far the Canon Raw Light footage can be stretched. Also interesting to hear your opinion on the quality of sound via cameras XML, as compared to a double system recording. How is the quality? Does the fan make a lot of noise if mic is mounted to camera? Thank you for your work.

    Thanks for the video! I keep meaning to learn Resolve (and color grading in general) but I only do very basic video work occasionally and usually only shooting my music gear) so I keep on using Sony Vegas to get OK results quickly since I'm familiar with it after nearly 10 years of using the product line . (I'm using a C100 MkI to a Ninja Blade and recording DNxHD files)

    • @JohnLRice
      @JohnLRice Před 6 lety

      The Vegas product line changed hands, from Sony to Magix which is fine, but they implemented internet connection authorization (like monthly I think) which doesn't work for me since I keep my DAW/NLE computer disconnected from the internet and any network. So I'm still on the last version of Vegas Pro Sony put out but I think at some point as technologies change I'll want to upgrade to more modern NLE software . And yes, I'd love to get into a C200, but I don't have the funds right now. ;-)

    Another great vid! Thank you. So you'll really go through all the raw footage, grade it first, and then export to edit? What if you need to change a look or you end up not liking it when you get to the edit? Do you save the RAW files as well?
    I'm still figuring out a workflow I like best, I hate round tripping but seems least destructive at this point. I'm going to be sharing some of my finds on c200 soon too via my channel. Just trying to get through this move I have going on.
    Also, I just got my Video Assist HD from BMD, def a huge jump in color from 8 bit to 10 bit HD, have you tested the UHD on your 7" Video Assist, I know its only 8 bit, was there any noticeable difference from that to the internal? Worth it?

    • @RetroRecipesKitchen
      @RetroRecipesKitchen Před 6 lety

      I would assume the best way to attack this would be to Color Correct in DaVinci, so the exposure and WB is correct. Then, when you export to the ProRes preference and import into your edit suite, you can cut, add effects and then actually Color Grade from there. If you're exporting as a 10-12Bit file, it shouldn't be difficult to make corrections. But that's just my thought.

  • @stephencox9507
    @stephencox9507 Před 6 lety

    Great work on the vlog, please keep it up, I own a C200, I love Resolve and use it all the time, but I have not been happy with BMD's implementation of Canon Raw Light. With Resolve's raw controls inoperative for CRM, there is no control of the colour space conversion in the de-baying process and noise in the blacks is a serious issue in low light footage. I have found this is fixed by using Canon's Raw Development software and de-bayering CRM into it's correct colour space, rendering out ProRes 4444 master files and deleting the CRM's. The PR 4444 files are 12 bit, they're a delight to grade with, they have all the dynamic range, detail and flexibility of the originals and a big plus is that Resolve plays them in real-time and they're are only slightly bigger than the originals. I was hoping to be able to work straight off the CRM's in Resolve as one might with R3D's, but after extensive testing, I don't think BMD has gotten it right - at least not yet. Hopefully future updates will make all the tools available, but at the moment (for me) the conversion just ain't right.

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety

      Very interesting! Thanks for your input. I think the noise issue in the blacks might be clog2 vs clog3. Resolve doesn't tell us which one we're looking at, but I suspect its clog2 with its 2 extra stops in the blacks that are pretty noisy. I have been reluctant to use the Canon Raw Dev because having a fluid color balance in Raw is the thing I most like about the grade in resolve. I really hope the next version of Resolve gives us access to the Raw panel..

    • @stephencox9507
      @stephencox9507 Před 6 lety

      Yes, you're right. De-bayering to Clog3 seems to deliver a better result in low light and clog2 offers more range in bright light. Switching between them in CRD you can see which one works best. I agree, no-one seems to know exactly how Resolve is handling this and without access to raw controls, we just don't really know what's going on. Hopefully BMD is getting some pressure on this . . . Cheers

    Thanks so much for sharing all this information. Really appreciated! I have 3 questions I hoped you could help me with. 1. Currently the exfs data is overlayed over the 16-9 frame. Is there a way to have this information (iso,fps,etc) outside the 16-9 image? I know the c300 mark 2 does this and was hoping the c200 would do also. 2 How much record time do you get on a 256gb cfast card? 3. Could you suggest the most affordable cards? Massive props, and thanks again : )

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety

      Glad you're getting something our of it! Not sure about the overlays and the c300. My BM screen itself is 16:9 no there isn't anywhere for them to go outside of the image. I do use the 'display' key to toggle them on and off to compose with. I'm getting around 36 minutes of Raw on a 256g card. The cheapest and most reliable right now is the Ego disk - amzn.to/2hhx1Ht - Everyone is hope they launch a 512g soon.

    Loving your videos. Have you had a chance to compare the C200 with the Red camera image? We have been Red users with a Scarlet-x and are considering ditching it for the C200. The C200 will be a lot more flexible on wide range of shoots. We are just worried about the losing the cinematic look and feel of R3d footage. Any thoughts?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks! I've shot a lot on red in the past and have never been a huge fan. The image quality to money and time spent ratio has always been behind the curve, for me at least. I think that Canon's clog2 and clog3, both of which the C200 shoots, are easily as cinematic, if not more so, than the image you're getting from your Scarlet-X, and its a lot cheaper and easier to work with than the Red. I know a lot of people who own and shoot with the Red camera, get a great result and love it. I'm just not one of them.

    Thanks for this! Really useful, I'm just looking at which speed SD Cards I would need for the MP4 footage. Which do you use?
    I read that the MP4 codec is 150 mb/s - Will the Lexar 1000x (Reads at 150 mb/s, writes at 80 mb/s) be fast enough? Or would I need to get the Lexar 2000x (Reads at 300 mb/s writes at 260 mb/s) A little confused!

    Great video! I'm a professional photographer that is trying to get more into video. I have a Canon 1dx ii and I think it takes great video, but it's obviously lacking the CLog and raw capabilities plus more that the C200 has to offer. So, is it worth saving up the money and getting a C200 to add to my two-person business since we are going heavier and heavier with video all the time? Video is starting to become more important and lucrative for us than photography, so I am willing to save the money over time to get it if it is truly worth it. Thank you ahead of time for anyone that answers!

      Not sure of your workflow or format but it could be that your proofing player just isn't displaying your render correctly. Have you tried to bring the render back into premiere? Does it look different or the same? Quicktime player tends to screw things up and isn't really a good way to proof the render. You could always try a different player like VLC or Switch to see if the render looks the same.

      there is a new contender on ebay now. its like breakout cfast to msata or something thats not esata. it ships straight outta china.

      Billy Huss I don’t. I just grade the raw itself. That might change with the new codec next year, but for now I don’t think the proxies add that much.

    Hello man. I have a ninja flame that can record 10 bit but not 4k. The Cfast cards on my c200 can record 4k but not 10 bit. So is it safe to say that something has to be sacrificed?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 5 lety

      The c200 shoots 12 bit Raw 4k internally. You really don't need to use a external recorder with it.

      Crimson Engine wow!!! Thanks man... I’m still learning this camera. This thing is a journey, you’ve made things easier to understand. Thank you for that. Just saw your video about taking my film making to the next level. I need to get off of CZcams so much and start shooting. That was my huge take away. Thanks.

    great work..ursa mini pro or c200?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety +1

      c200 all the way. I really wanted the Ursa mini when it was announced but rented it for a weekend and realised it wasn't for me. Some people love it and it suits their needs, but glad I waited for the c200. trying to get my hands on the EVA1 to see what all that is about...

    • @alexmainwaring
      @alexmainwaring Před 6 lety +1

      I think it really depends on what you'll be shooting. I consider the Ursa Mini a studio camera as in you'll probably want a few helping hands when you go out and shoot; whereas it's much easier to go out and shoot something solo with the C200. Both cameras provide a beautiful image, but I personally think I'd get more use out of the C200.

    How many minutes of 4K raw can you put on one 512gb card?

    Does that circle at 7:04 track the face if you move around?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety +1

      It can, but you have to tell resolve to track it. It easy for short shots without much movement. It can be tricky if you have a long take and the person moves behind things.

    How do you get to the 120 fps option? I can only get to 60fps.

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety

      The 120 is only for the mp4, not the Raw. You have to alter the shooting mode, then the frame rate

    • @calvinonkeys
      @calvinonkeys Před 6 lety

      Oh yes. I'm trying to use it on mp4 but I'm not sure how to do so. Do I switch to "slow motion mode" then what?

      do you know if 120 fps is recorded in 8 or 10 bit?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety

      its 8 bit and its pretty heavily compressed. If you were to cut it with raw footage, the drop in quality is noticeable.

      Your videos are great. It helped me make disicion about c200 and eva 1. I will buy c200. How hard to make clip in post prodact RAW file? Color grade men sad that r3d raw from RED good more then from canon RAW.

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety

      You're welcome. I find the c200 footage easy to edit, but you need the right workflow, which I will outline in a future video. The c200 has around the same latitude (number of stops) as the Red cameras, but I much prefer the Canon color science over Red colors. Its largely personal taste.

    When we go to a theater, all we see is, a color of about 12 bit - a between muddy 8 bit color and 32 bit crisp color bit. 12 bit color depth is the main player in the industry. To me, your 32 bit color made the main subject look to much like a cut out of the background - a green screen affect look in a way. Your foreground and background looks too separated, too clean (fake look). Your overall image look somewhat way too harsh. Have you try to limit your image to 12 bit and can you show us? 10 bit color from this guys look so professional, just as the way I see in the theater or a 4K movie. mattscottvisuals.com/

      @Crimsonengine  Před 6 lety

      Hey Phal, thanks for watching. The max color bit depth of the c200 is 12 bit in raw, so thats what all these images are. If you're a fan of Matt Scott and his visuals, he's the one you should be talking to. He has a bunch of Tutorials on that site that looks great. He's from Hobart, which is one not that far (in global terms) from where I grew up in Melbourne.

    Why Davinci over Adobe?

    • @dcd6115
      @dcd6115 Před 6 lety +2

      Because Adobe does not support Canon Raw Light at this time.

    • @Crimsonengine

      Premiere has some great grading tools, but nothing like Resolve. Also, what Bob said is true - only resolve can read the c200 raw files.
