This tale reminds me of some of the old folk tales I cherish from my youth and younger days. My bride's Pappa would tell us stories of similar events while sitting around a campfire strumming a banjo. So much wisdom, no batteries or WI-FI required. 👍👍
I miss the company of men around a campfire...Great story! The Last Wagon with Richard Widmark came to mind (you remind me of him) and old Store Bought was Walter Matthau. I am willing to bet that his retelling of the story is quite different.

That is a wonderful story sir! I was never a fan of people that thought they were the best because they bought the best stuff. I won a local shooting match with an old mini-14 that I bought for $400. They only guy that got upset was the guy with a several thousand dollar (he bragged to everyone) modern rifle that looked like a Marine should be using it a 2000 yard sniper rifle. His scope bases were probably more than my rifle and I was using steel case Russian ammo. We were shooting different sizes of pop bottles at 100 yards from the standing position. Smaller bottle more points. I got double points for not using a scope. All the other 30 some people there had fun. After this jerk lost he was complaining that I only won because I didn't use a scope. A lot of people there were using open sights but it was the only thing he felt he had on me, I guess.
That is a awesome story. Keep the stories coming. It makes me think of a old friend who's past away now. But he could tell the best what I call whittling stories we would just sit around the wood stove make coffee , whittling and trade stories.
