    Ok so for real here's my comment. So I'm South African, but I'm one those-didn't-grow-up-during-Apartheid South Africans so sometimes I feel far removed from what is supposedly meant to be the black experience. I went to watch this movie because of the hype and to see if it would really be worth the watch and it was. There were two moments which I felt summed up the movie for me. The first was when T'challa meets his sister in her lab and they do this little hand shake coupled with the "Wakanda Forever" cross. I was, like, "YAAASSS black people do that hand shake all the time!" The second moment was when the one tribe (which was based off of Sotho people) used their traditional blankets as shields. I was never ready for that moment. When I left Black Pather I realised that I had actually been downplaying just how much I personally needed to see a story like this. That just because I'm a post-apartheid baby doesn't make me less included in the black experience. Ok bye (Thanks for the video Evelyn. Also I think I would be a lot like Shuri).

      I was fascinated by your comment about not growing up during apartheid. I'm a black american and I didn't grow during the civil rights movement or desegregation but I don't feel removed from the black experience. Those things aren't meant to be our black experience. They're a part of the history of things our relatives and others experienced and we have our own current experiences that are different. We acknowledge and learn from those experiences past and present.

      Before Africans were drove of fertile land into arid areas, emollient did flow through the air. Each kidnapped African forced to be a slave, had beautiful teeth, strong bodies, and beautiful hair. When you see African children starving, it's because of colonization by the colonizers, who killed and took over.

    Just some quick thoughts:
    The thing about Killmonger's "death" scene was he decided to take after his mother's ancestors and not his father's because he didn't know them and couldn't relate to them. Nakia was Killmonger but with a soul. Chadwick could get it any day of the year. Shuri must be protected at all cost. N'Jobu broke my heart when he & Erik met on the ancestral plane. Like you could tell that he was heartbroken by what his son had become. T'Chaka & Zuri ain't worth a damn for leaving baby Erik behind. And the Black Panther Original Score is lit. Get into it.

He thought it was beautiful and he was happy that T’challa got to see his Dad. Watching your video I realize it might be because he wants to talk to my Dad, who he is named after and who passed away before he was born. Love the breakdown, Evelyn. I'm not so sure about the irreconcilable differences part. What I saw in Killmonger's was an internalization of the colonizer's zero-sum philosophies. He believed he would either have to be the domineering despot or a perpetual political prisoner. It never occurred to him that his family and country might accept his valid concerns about isolationism and global Black suffering, let alone accept HIM. I think he was wrong.

    I think I relate with T'Challa. When you want to get along with everyone, and everyone to get along. Even those who just don't want to. When you give both your elders and your younger ones a voice because you respect what all have to offer. When you are badass and can kick major ass when needed, but most of the time you just want to handle things with an easy even swag.. When you try and make the best out of duty and leadership, but still want to get some fun out of it. When you have a loyal small group of support system that picks you up, supports you and encourage you when you are down.. I am T'Challa. 🙅

      eon001 my friend an I had a convo about this for a whole hour. I think I would have liked to see him finally lose his composure at the end and show he still had emotions, but he really didn't have any anymore. So, to me, it came off as being extremely scripted and awkward. But I still think he did a pretty good job and he's still the best "villain" even tho he isn't even one.

    • @renemorgan1997
      @renemorgan1997 Před 6 lety +24

      Killmonger the man was cold. Killmonger chose to become a cold blade of vengeance against the tribe that killed his only living parent. Killmonger shot his girlfriend to make a profitable kill without hesitation. That’s cold-blooded. Killmonger was a cold-hearted focused man with a personal unyielding goal of conquest over oppressors. A living blade has no heart, soul, or emotionality of any kind.
      So, Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of Killmonger was bloody brilliant.

    • @eon001
      @eon001 Před 6 lety +3

      michuki yea I think they missed an opportunity for killmonger to show some vulnerability in the ancestral plane flashback scene with his dad. I would have liked to see him weep a little bit. Although that might have made him too sympathetic so I see why they didn't go that route.

      Go back to that father - son moment. Killmonger‘ s father cried the tears his son no longer had the soul to give...My brother next to me at the movie 🎥 🍿 cried for both of them. In this unspoken war , all suffer. Much is lost - sometimes our humanity grows cold. That is the true tragedy. There has to be a better way to win freedom for us all.

    • @molina616
      @molina616 Před 6 lety +16

      eon001 I will say this tho: the reason I thought MBJ still did a good job despite not showing the emotion I specifically wanted was because his lack of emotion/cold heartedness was addressed. Killing people without hesitation, killing himself when he could have been saved, etc. But in that scene with his father, we saw a bit of that as well when his father began to cry and seemed hurt when he essentially asked "are you not going to shed any tears for me?" And had that line not been there, I wouldn't have been okay with that entire scene. But because his father said that I was able to understand that this guy became emotionally stunted when he was traumatized discovering his father's lifeless body. It helped me understand the characterization that was given to him, even if I didn't particularly like the dialogue (which is subjective of course). I think that MBJ did a good job portraying what was created for him. And it was such a refreshing take on Marvel's "villian" because we've seen them try to use villians that they THINK are powerful and absolutely menacing but they always miss the mark. But HERE we get to see someone else who has an extremely different mindset willing to sacrifice his life. I'm just glad we are getting Marvel movies with substance so that we, as a collective group, can have these discussions and actually make conversation instead of just saying "well it was another super hero movie".

    Thanks for opening up the dialogue, Evelyn!! Few Black Americans know the 1st slaves were in the Caribbean (Haiti, Dominica, & Cuba in like 1513--way before USA in like 1680 to 1700). The treatment was even worst because the Spaniards tried to work them 12 to 16 hours --killing many from exhaustion. Some were even taken to Mexico - but not many survived. If we as Black Americans were not so strong & adaptable, we would have died from diseases & overwork conditions too. So, that is why we should take care of each other with a kind word or deed (Black, African, Caribbean, Brazilian/South American. We are all trying to take care of family, community, etc & want the same things out of life. So when I travel, I get positive vibes & warm greetings from those who look like me & other minorities. Black Caribbean immigrants and their children have also fought against racism in America because it affects all of us. Black people need to come together against oppression because the White man doesn't care that my parents are from Jamaica; he just sees me as a Black woman. We all were ripped from our homes and did the best with what we were given.

I definitely think the movie has open up a new perspective and hungry for every brown person. As a filipino, my culture is definitely influenced by colonizers. For a long time, i was ashamed to be filipino because I didnt want to be called a fob when i moved to america. I really wanted to fit in. But now, not only i want to embrace my filipino culture, the movie even inspired to to really tap into my people’s pre-colonized tribal culture. Even though Black Panther was about celebrating African culture and it’s beauty, i cant help to be inspired and be proud of my culture. With that said, i thank you for always leading the way.
