It’s the same as brown/navy/dark colored canvas/leather sneakers to a suit. But you’re right, it often comes down to the fact that they are probably the closest to a dress shoe that they have. In some cases it’s acceptable, because no one expects a middle schooler to spend his money on high end dress shoes, but beyond a certain age chances are high that you will need them at some point so it’s probably a good “investment” (or let’s say “well spend money”)

You might want to reconsider the title of this video - people who sell "boat shoes" might agree.... LOL How about "Stop Wearing Boat Shoes as Dress Shoes" or something like it? It's great you explain what you mean in the video, but the title is a shocker - the title is why I watched it, because I know you like your Sperry boat shoes, and boat shoes are on your list of shoes to own. (I really appreciate your videos - they are well done and to the point. Thanks!)

I agree wholeheartedly - with a possible exception. I attended a fairly preppy college in New England. Wearing topsiders with khakis, a sport coat, and maybe a tie was extremely common. Doing so wouldn’t make you appear to not know what you were doing. In fact, you’d be right in line with others. This was many years ago, however, so maybe things are different now. Bottom line, I guess, is: know your environment and use your judgment!

A slight note on why I think this is worse than wearing a sneaker with a suit: boat shoes can come across as you just genuinely not knowing that they are in fact casual shoes, whereas people at least know it was a deliberate choice to wear white sneakers. A surprising number of dudes kinda think anything in black or dark brown leather is automatically "dressy". Although, you should not wear either to a business meeting (or anywhere you are REQUIRED to wear a suit really).

Ilham Nandana - IDK. I think casual bottoms (jeans, chinos, 5 pocket pants, shorts), are perfectly fine w/o belt. If OTR suit has belt loops I think either w/belt or bracers are the most acceptable choices. Odd OTR wool trousers & more refined chinos. I think the respectable choice is to wear a belt. It's easier get away w/o belt if suit jacket or SC is involved and pants absolutely fit perfectly w/o belt.
