  • In a story by The Ringer's Howard Beck about MVP voting, Dallas Mavericks fans were upset at the idea that Luka Doncic does not contribute to winning. Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye agree with Mavs fans and scoff at the idea that plus/minus numbers can correctly illustrate how valuable a superstar player like Doncic is, especially in a playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

    The reason Joker's on/off is so high is because when he goes to the bench at the start of the 2nd quarter, so does Murray, KCP, Porter, and Gordon (or several of them). So it's not Joker's on/off, it's the starting five's on/off. Jokic is hugely important, but it's a team of guys just slightly below all-star level so without him they can play close but their bench is thin so they get 4-6 minute stretches with guys far below that level. Murray/KCP/MPJ/Gordon/Jokic vs Jackson/Braun/Watson/Holiday/Strauther. Yeah, I'm thinking that's a pretty big on/off.
    Luka by himself can cause a massive dropoff because he is such a big scorer and great passer (like Jokic) and although Kyrie is good as well, he missed a lot of games early so when Luka sat there was literally no offense happening.

    The on off number are such a pathetic stat. It's so lineup dependent it's crazy. Mike Malone takes most of the starters off when he takes jokic off, that's why the on off are so big. Yet Luka a lot of the time plays with 3 to 4 bench players. Basing your argument on on/off is pathetic.

      Honestly. At its' surface, it seems like a good stat, but there's so much noise that it's impossible to standardize.
      Does your coach sit all starters together? How deep is your bench? Are your off minutes usually in blowouts? Are you sitting out more against easier or harder matchups?
      If anything, it seems like the stat tells you more about coaching strategy than player talent.

    • @chiefwahoo6408
      @chiefwahoo6408 Před 27 dny

      Same thing when they compare "time of possession" between Jokic and Doncic. This includes the time bringing the ball up and allowing the half court offense to set. Luka brings the ball up, Jokic usually does not. Usually Murray brings the ball up, lets the offense set up, then hands it off to Jokic at the top of the key, when they run their two man it's usually Murray handling the ball. It's a completely nonsense stat I see all the time to discredit Luka.

    As much as on/off numbers can be misleading, the eye test agrees with them. When he’s not out there the ball moves so beautifully and people play much harder on defense.

Now this part is my opinion, but I think all ball movement is positive in the long run, even if you’re not always getting the best shot because when guys touch the ball more it’s easier to get in a Rythym. I’ve heard many players talk about how hard it is to shoot when you’re just standing in a corner. I mean look at Luka, most of his career he’s struggled to hit catch and shoot threes because he needs to dribble to get his rythym.

      luka is not overrated, if you are in denial about how hurt he is cause hes giving you 30-10-10, then you simply need to grow up and admit you dont understand how this is happening.
      And anyone who says dumb things like "what has ky done since Cleveland", needs to reevaluate their common sense. It's idiotic reasoning like that why dallas didn't hesitate to get him for chump change.
