- Hey guys, I thought it would be beneficial for some to show the hangar doors I built on the 100X60 Airplane Hangar shop building I built.
The one door was my own design and the other is a common hangar door design in my area that I think is an affordable easy door to build. I built the one hangar door for around $1500.00 dollars.
Both doors are 50X11ft built from 2x2 square thin wall steel tubing.
The Hangar shop is a Steel building kit that I put on columns and footers.
This was primarily built by myself with some help.

Hi Jonas, I have built a few doors in my life which is about twice of yours and hat is off to you. This was one of the main reasons I subscribed to your channel was because you are not like most people. You can actually walk and chew gum at the same time no problem. That's what I like about you and I think you have done a bang-up job on those doors for the amount of money Invested. Great job chum. Nice useful video. There are lots of ways to build hangars and their doors all depending on how deep your pockets are. I built a 30' x 30' shed/hangar with sliding doors for less than £1,000. ($1,500). Not as pretty an Jonas's buy hey I am a mean old bugger. Regards, Jim in NI UK

Interesting video. My father and I built a nice 50 ft. wide hangar door that was a “5” fold (5 ft. panels, 5 on each side of center). We fabricated the panels with a torsion box structure out of plywood with interior foam insulation. It folded to the inside of the hangar. Easily opened by a single person, no cables, no motors, no electricity, excellent sealing against the weather. Worked great and was copied by several people on a residential airpark. btw I grew up on a farm in Bliss Idaho.

Love it! Built my 42' bifold door for my pole barn hangar out of wood with the help of my dad. Gotta say I'd love to hear more about your structure on your doors...sounds like you started a little light on the 1st door you built. Mine is way too light in my opinion and I can't open it in heavy winds, but with the correct bracing it has done really well in keeping the planes safe.

Well done Jonas. I've been waiting for one of you guys that fly together to come up with a video on your hanger doors. I'm going the hydraulic route. I really like how you did the last door. Unfortunately I don't have the height for that design to open inside the hanger but it would be the cheapest and the least amount of stress on the structure as you pointed out.

I really like those doors and really admire that you just built them yourself, rather than just drop thousands for someone else to come do it for you. Hat is definitely off. A few things I've noticed:
5:24 The Crosby clips look like they're rigged backwards on that wire rope. The saddles of the clips always go on the long, or live end otherwise, they WILL slip. "Never saddle a dead horse". They make fist grips that can go on either way, but those aren't them. On the second door, 11:27 Those clips are installed correctly.
The other possible danger I see is the winch. If that is what is holding the door up, it could be a real problem one day. They look similar, but the difference is, a winch is for pulling, but a hoist is for lifting things and has some sort of brake. Usually, it's electrically operated; when the motor starts the brake releases and off you go. Just about every winch I've seen has nothing but gear reduction to stop it from turning if enough force is exerted. If the door is counter balanced enough that the winch/hoist is only for moving the door, then no problem. Otherwise, if there's something that mechanically holds it after the door is raised (say a chain grab or similar), also, no problem.
Hate to see someone hurt or something broken. You might want to swap those cable clips around the proper way before anyone walks under that thing when it's open. Check the Crosby Group website for very good rigging info.

as a door tech for over 35 years myself I would of used a shaft and drums on door #3 instead of so much cable, by using cable on drums you could of got some gear reduction action going in there but I guess to each their own. but they work so I will give you that, great job.

Since you don't like hinges, I guess bi-fold was out of the question. They work great as far as snow. Also very safe in higher winds. The newer ones use wide straps instead of cables. My door is 45 feet wide and about 16 feet tall, 18 ft to the eaves. 2 stories at our office end of the building. Our door has needed no real repairs in 22 years. The building was from R&M steel out of Boise.
I didn’t have the head room for a bifold. That’s one thing that is a downside to the bifold. They are great doors though.
@@JonasMarcinko that is a financial consideration the "extra hight" needed for a bi-fold can be a chunk of $..my "by-pass-doors" SUCK, ZERO head room,extra nito.in strut just to clear vert.stab.

Good door. I need a hanger door about 36 feet wide and 9 feet high. I really think your second type would work for me. Do you have sketches of the frame and track placement? Also the gage of the corrugated metal on the outside?
Higher Power Doors are the best doors! Don’t build one get a Higher Power you won’t be disappointed. They are basically the best tugs of hangar doors

Wow that’s great ! I could build stuff like that I’m sure but it would take me a life time you have some amazing energy there . My rental uses these large 3 or 4 inch wide yellow straps with the hinges in the middle . straps look very strong but the system looks very $$$$$ . Great vids congratulations again 👍

Quick visual feedback for modification. Take off the barrels and reduce counterweight by the doors (the door beam on the cable).
That was a Great series on Your Pole Barn Build .Will be Building a 48x60 Pole building Man Cave shop..With a lean too on one side.Will be great help always like new ways and young Ideas,,Especialy the Rank a underground air system for cooling and help with Heating. Hi Jonas, I built a door exactly like the last one you showed and it works great. Except I used a regular garage door opener in the center with counter weight on the end. It was a 40 foot door. John

Hey Jonas I built a door very similar to your second one but I did it out of wood 2x4s and laminated 1x4s for the horizontals. I first started with garage door tracks for the outside tracks but the rollers kept popping out. Do you have center supports or a strut for the second door? I'm thinking I need to add a strut down the center to keep mine from bowing/sagging. It being wood instead of steel is probably my issue. Thanks for posting and looking forward to your response!

Great job on all the doors especially the last one in this video! I'm getting ready to have a hangar built and watching your videos, I might try erecting it on my own instead of paying Thousand$ to have someone else do it. I was also going to order a Higher Power door but the 30-36 week wait times is unacceptable to be without a Hangar Door.

Jonas, Nice video. I have a 45' x 12' opening on my wood frame hanger. I would like swap out the 4 roller panels for a door like the 2nd one you built. Does the wood header or frame need to be reinforced to utilize a door like yours? How much clearance on the 12' vertical would I loose?

Jonas. You should totally consider starting a second CZcams channel where you fabricate things. Just everything from airplanes to your Ride it board, to anything really. I find your few video's that you did fabrication work on this channel were some of the most entertaining videos for me personally to watch. Im sure im not alone on this opinion either. You have a gift of being able to build things, rather great i must say. I think you should use it to possibly start another channel that can be HUGE! Idk, just a thought, an idea. Maybe you don't have the time, or maybe it just doesn't interest you in the slightest. We will see :)

Jonas Marcinko - he is correct Jonas. I believe the same about your build ideas. Necessity is the mother of inventions and you are the mother of all creations needed.lol.. You have some of the best creation ideas for practical applications that have come to us viewers in a long time. Your ideas prove that one doesn’t need to throw money at a project that is founded in a solid idea/design. The only idea I take issue in is when you chose carpeting in a hanger. It’s works great but I would worry about the spread of a fire inside the hanger or a firefighter and the toxicity level that will come from the hanger that even a small fire would create. These hanger doors all have merit in each of their designs and you have worked out the kinematics for each design and that’s 99% of the engineering involved and rest is load stress on material. Great job all around. What no Sylvia this time?? WTF we like you but we love her now that she’s a part of your life. Listen we would much rather listen to her than you babble on about hinges!! Great video! The last hanger I owned had sliding doors which were a real pain to maintain. Sure could have used someone with your talent back then. The 12V system is really impressive as well as our strip was remote with no access to the grid. Again, great video!
I've never built a hangar door, but I used to design man lifts and elevators. Those doors are heavy enough to squash people or shit-can an airplane. Side bar: I knew a guy that built components to re-fit all the antique hangar doors in use by the RCAF. Rumor has it that one door dropped and cut a CF-18 in half.

how much was the hanger kit?
Helpful video, thanks for posting it! I am planning on building a very small version (only about 7'x7') of the 2nd door in the video (the one that opened out and provides shade). I would like it to be as light as possible, provide shade when open, and be as weather tight as possible when closed. I'd appreciate hearing any tips or ideas that would help identify the best/easiest/cheapest way to accomplish that. Thanks!
7x7 would be great size for that style of door. I don’t think you’ll need any counter weight. Aluminum tubing would definitely make it light. But may not be necessary.

Probably could have used a single aluminum I beam on the inside to prevent the warping. Or for light weight, a tension wire on a couple of posts to push where it's needed, but this door would need to take compression.
