Two main reasons why some smaller and ethnic stores don't accept credit card or if they do, they charge 3 to 5% more. First reason is, cash is hard to track - therefore, can hide income from taxes. Two, the credit card processing companies charge the shop about 3% commission. So if a shop is operating on very small profit margin, having to pay this commission directly cuts into their profit, turning it into loss. Even gas stations in most cases have two prices listed, one for cash and another for credit card.

Hi Navankur: It was quite funny to see you guys driving around in my neighborhood. The area around Oak Tree Road in Edison is also know as Little India. The India Day Parade goes through main sections of Oak Tree Road and over 20,000 people attend every year. Top politicians including the NJ Governor himself attend these celebrations. The Mayor of Edison, Sam Joshi, is an Indian American.

Hi, the reason behind the 3% is that card companies charge them a certain amount per transaction. Its especially bad with American Express, where some outlets would outright refuse to accept it.
