  • "I never thought I would get anywhere in the guitar game because I just didn't have the discipline. But I think it was through the cool side of punk and hardcore that let me see that you didn't have to rip technically to express something unique and exciting to people or to say something cool." In this episode of String Theory, we speak with Walter Schreifels about how the hardcore/punk scene broke barriers in his career, playing with Quicksand and Rival Schools, his inspiration to pick up the guitar, and more.
String Theory is a web series from Ernie Ball that explores the sonic origins of some of music's most innovative players.
Walter Schreifels relies on Ernie Ball Power Slinky electric guitar strings. You can find them here: ernieb.al/powerslinky

Walter Schreifels and Bob Mould are like the unsung songwriter-guitar heroes of the entire punk/hardcore/alternative movement from the late 70s-2000s. I'd put them right up there with Kurt Cobain.

This guy has done so much for punk and alternate music. I owe him a huge debt that I'll never be able to pay for the inspiration he's given me

Quicksand's album Slip came out in 1993,and I got to see them opening up for Anthrax that same year, and I still jam Slip in my car TO THIS DAY. Rival Schools United By Fate was an excellent CD too,Look up Good Thins here on CZcams. Good stuff, and also check out the latest Quicksand release Interiors. Walter has had a long career and I've always felt he was always under the radar,so it's cool to see that Ernie Ball has him and Fender has his bass player Sergio Vega both on CZcams with in a couple of months from each other.

There are a ton of great string manufacturers out today, but I choose Ernie Ball. I love the tone and feel when I string them on my Kiesel.
