The reason the fans love sean is because on ESPN when asked about his first title defence, Sean told a story about a dad with two daughters in San Diego and referred to him as the better man. And Sean's honesty towards how impressed he was that someone who was his fan could be doing well not in spite of him, but through him in some way.

Self-esteem issue, comes with being condemned verbally & physically. Hence, does not see the belt as a reward for his work. Yet, fighting is the only thing that makes him feel valued.
I grew up with a bunch of Sean Stricklands in the early 80's and 90's. I'm so glad they're still making them even if they are in limited quantities.

The huge difference is that Sean props up the broader society and not himself, which is the exact opposite of that most famous people, who are brands in and of themselves, do. Not that they’re not thankful to the rest of society and not that they don’t share the same views, but Sean is explicit about it and think that is what makes him real and others gravitate towards that
People forget this guy was abused majority of his life. Got in a car accident where he suffered brain damage & was told basically he could never do the only thing he loved again. Okay so I was on the fence about him but after watching this interview I’m now a fan. He seems so real and just an injured soul that I wish the best for him. He’s also interesting and tragic. I'm 3rd generation Iron worker. We can't even keep track of all the buildings we have built. I've torn down buildings my grandfather built. If your child goes to school in my area there is a 90% chance my family built that school. We also go to the food bank and rarely have hot water or electricity. Have licenses but can't afford a car or insurance. Have to rent due to a dump of a house being valued at $400,000. Sean actually understands this and so much respect to the guy for not putting himself on a podium.
