That speech was 💩 Rocky Jr has a point. His pops has been a lingering shadow and a disaster by allowing Tommy Gunn to live in his house. He took Rocky Jr room too. He lost all his wealth and moved his son into the ghetto. Now his son is educated and doesn't want to live in the shadow of his disaterous dad. Rocky is a goofball. If you noticed in Creed, Rocky Jr moves away to be left alone. He knows his dad is a disaster who makes a lot of stupid mistakes I.e, getting in the ring at 60 while simultaneously being diagnosed with "irreversible" brain damage 🤷🤷🤷

I love the entire saga, but I can see a few things that I don't like.
Rocky was about to give up many times, but Mickey, Adrian, Apollo, Duke, even Adonis and Marie, help him.
His son needs to fight for he worth, but he's alone; don't have that help.
In that context, Rocky is so hypocrite.

Very much so, you can see he feels guilty over how he treated Adrian in the past so being there with Rocky to visit her is nothing more than a reminder of how bad he was and he wanted to avoid that because what could he do to make it up? It's too late for him in his mind.

When Dixon breaks his hand in the fight, Antonio Tarver (who plays him) had actually broken his hand for real, punching Stallone on the hip. Stallone wrote that injury into the script on the spot.

  • @Sogekidan
    @Sogekidan Před rokem +32

Maybe I can give some context over Rocky's son and his attitude towards his father. My own father was a junior high art teacher as long as I could remember, meaning in my small town, there was a really good chance people would know who he was. Even my friend's mother had him as a teacher. Because of that for my whole life, through out my teenage years and even in high school I was known first as "Mr. Sanchez's Son" and not Danny. Other teachers and adults would as me how he was doing first before even talking to me about anything else and by the time I was old enough to be in his class room I was actually sick of it myself. Don't get me wrong, he was VERY much like Rocky too, kind, warm, told bad jokes and a great teacher who helped the community many times. But because of that I felt like I couldn't ever be more than his son til around the time I moved out of the house/town and was over 500 miles away. I wasn't ever a dick to him about it but there was some resentment there during my teenage years. When you can't escape your parents shadow it does affect you overtime. While Rocky's son is relatable for me, his attitude wasn't indeed the greatest.

Paulie is very aware of how awful he is. He's one of those people that probably had some pretty severe childhood trauma and never received help so he self-medicated with alcohol. He has those moments of clarity, though, where he does selfless things, despite being selfish and bitter most of the time. And you can tell in those moments how ashamed he is of himself.

"What is it you said to the kid? It ain't about how hard you're hit, it's about how you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. Get up!"
Fun Fact: Pedro Lovell reprises his role as Spider Rico, the boxer defeated by Rocky in the opening scene of Rocky (1976).
Authentic Battle Damage Fact: The bout between Rocky and Dixon was filmed with actors Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Tarver really hitting one another. According to Stallone, not a single punch in the fight was pulled, and every hit on film was a hit for real. Furthermore, Stallone has revealed that the scene where Rocky is knocked down for a 9 count, and is trying to get to his feet by taking hold of the rope, but is having difficulty focusing on it, is completely genuine; Tarver really did knock him down, and he really couldn't get up.
Location Location Fact: During preproduction, as the filmmakers tried to find a good location to shoot the fight, they met with constant obstacles - every suitable arena was booked out. Sylvester Stallone knew that HBO had an upcoming PPV event with Bernard Hopkins taking on Jermaine Taylor in the main event, at the Mandalay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Stallone suggested that the film could piggyback the real event, using the real HBO format, the real crowd, even the real press conference setup. As such, the press conference scene was shot only moments after the real press conference with Hopkins and Taylor, whilst the scene when Rocky walks through the curtain and down to the ring was shot using the real Hopkins/Taylor crowd. Stallone was hoping that the crowd wouldn't boo or cause any problems, but as he made his way to the ring (as Rocky), the whole building gave him a standing ovation and began a "ROCKY, ROCKY" chant. The crowd was never told to stand up or to chant - they had done it completely on their own, and according to the filmmakers, by far the biggest cheer of the night was for Rocky, not for any of the real fighters.

Sylvester Stallone once said that he had written several drafts of the script where Adrian was alive and Robert (Rocky Jr. ) was in the Air Force. Rocky expressed desire to fight again, and his family were justifiably perplexed. Sylvester didn't find that emotionally engaging or interesting.
He said that if we the audience were to get back behind Rocky as an underdog, Rocky would have to be at a place in his life where he felt like 'less than zero'. In order for that to happen, the most precious part of his life had to be gone.
That way, Rocky's desire to fight again is born out of more than a desire to prove that he can still do it. Now, it is born out of a place of deep grief and rage. This is about Rocky getting rid of the need to fight (the beast inside, the angry stuff in the basement) so that he can start to heal and move on with a new part of life.
I loved the relationship between Rocky, Marie, and Steps. The movie doesn't cheapen Adrian's memory or push her aside. She is still very much the heart of the movie. Just like she is the "core" of Rocky's own heart. Still, there was enough there to know that Marie and Rocky did care about each other. Rocky didn't have to feel as alone in life as he would have without Marie, Steps and Punchy. The moments shared with Robert are some of the best in the franchise.
It's things like this that make 'Rocky Balboa' my favorite film in the core Rocky series. It's all about heart. The last thing to age in a person is the heart. If you can remain optimistic, grateful for your blessings in life and "keep moving forward", you are rich.

Im speaking for myself but I believe alot of people out here watching your reactions, we saw these movies as kids so Paulie didn't really piss us off like what you see Paulie as. That is two very different perspectives. I feel this movie really showed Paulies guilt toward Adrian and that he really wishes he could change his past. Its a great life lesson because it shows just how much what we do today will impact our futures. Without Paulie, Rocky doesn't have his Adrian. You are an amazing reactor!

    • @bradhorowitz2765

Absolutely agree. As you get older you notice or spy attention to certain details. As kids, rocky is this superhero who overcomes troubles. And Adrian, paulie are all there for the ride and you enjoy them for their quirks. As adults, you notice more about the subtle moments, how the Characters change, things you get more annoyed by, and some of the moment that reflect the times. Also, as adults perhaps the feelings of loss and time resonate more. A skids we don’t really get that.

Not only was Mills a referee but he was a boxer with a 10-1 record, he was also a district attorney for Nevada and a Judge. Mills refereed over 100 title fights. Was aloud to be with them when he hit the top, and when they lost everything they gave him a room in the house when they barely got through day by day. In the sixth he is still obnoxious, but like a brother to Rocky and no matter what kind of personality he still has means as much to Rocky as the other way around as they enter old age. I enjoyed watching it with him and seeing his reaction for the first time. I talked with my son about his speech and how true it was. A great way to live your life with integrity and courage. ❤

The fight in this movie actually took place at a real boxing event and took place before the real fight. It was unannounced and the reactions from the crowd were supposedly organic with people cheering Rocky. Supposedly they filmed 4 endings so the real ending would be unknown before the movie came out. People said the crowd were more into the Rocky fight than the one that night.

I’m not seeing anyone answer your question in these comments, so I’ll answer it here. When Dixon told Rocky “You’re one crazy old man,” Rocky’s response was “You’ll get there.” Letting him know, someday he’s gonna be just like him, where Rocky is now, wanting to do something crazy to get whatever is left of the fighter in him out and free.

Great reaction JL. This was the best way to end the franchise. Yes, he's in the Creed movies, but it's not his story. And what he said at the start of the last round was :
Dixon: "You're a crazy old man"
    Rocky: "You'll get there.

Nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. It's not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." that means a lot coming from Stallone. He was completely at the end of the line before Rocky. He had nothing. But he refused to give up, and he pushed forward and followed his dream, and he became a superstar.

Your reactions always have a lot of heart, and depth. No surprise you resonate with Rocky.
You know, when I was younger, I couldn't stand Paulie. But after hitting 50 years old, all my own regrets, my failures, the things I ain't proud of, they threaten to make me bitter. And I know, Paulie was always bitter, always an asshole, but now I just feel sorry for him, ending up with nothing, and no one, even if he deserved it. "I treated her bad, I don't have to think about this." I sympathize with the regret. I don't excuse it, but the part of me that sees that no amount of penance, regret, no effort i could make now can change the past, that part of me feels bad for him.
