This is unique footage of the great Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).
He is seen at home, working on a canvas.
I'm just astonished it exists - I never imagined I'd see film of him painting - you even get a sense of his method of applying the oil to the canvas.
Also present in this footage are Renoir's youngest son Claude, 14, who stands by to arrange the palette and place the brush in his father's hand, and Sacha Guitry, the man who made this film in 1915 and who appears midway through the film sitting down and talking with the artist.

Yes, the old boy certainly was determined to paint. His struggle is legend. The adhesive tape wraps to cushion the palms of his crippled hands. The pain he endured. And for a long time, the poverty. Yet it was he that sustained Monet and his wife, even as he raised his own large family. This film was made in 1915, not 1919. He was 74. He died in February of 1919.
Have you seen the 2012 movie RENOIR by Gilles Bourdos? It’s a sumptuous feast of color and atmosphere. Frustratingly slow as a movie but in every way a marvelous recreation of the Master’s last year of life.
Renoir was a heavy smoker. Lived to be 79 when the average life during that time period was 50.
Renoir's intentions as an artist were best summarized by his own words: "The earth as the paradise of the gods: That is what I want to paint."

Amazing he got anything done with so much chatting. This was just before he died. He had severe arthritis in his hands, which you can see. Sure loved to smoke.

amazing to see him still at work - and to be able to judge a little of his method of applying paint to canvas. glas you like the music - it seems to give the right reflective mood for looking back into the past.
Amazing he could still paint masterpieces with the rheumatism having left his hands in this shape!!!

yes, amazing - the way people just adjust to disability (his hands are so twisted and deformed by the disease ) and get on with things is inspirational!

yes, i agree - he just seems to go on with without reference to his crippling condition.
I love the way he somehow manages to hold the brush and the cigarette in the same hand in spite of the arthritis. I wish we could hear what they are saying.

yes i've often wondered about the conversations they were having and wondered if lip-readers could say what they were? though if revealed maybe the discourse was banal, which could be interesting too - a real insight into the ordinary character of these artists, Renoir, Monet and so on.

Yesterday, I saw the Renoir exposition at the Kimbell Gallery. It was amazing to see the actual paint textures made by the greatest artist in history. I will treasure that hour for the rest of my life.

This is one of my favourite films with yours. Remembering me like the Tate Galery, whence my cousin headed in Front of me, I was allmost like staying out... they asked me if I wanted to wear a students ticket (because my family members had bought that one family ticket). But when I met on Degas, old memories went overwhelming. It's beautiful when you one day or two arrived on the original.

It seems that the footage was shot in 1915, and released in 1919 by Sacha Guitry? Jean Renoir describes Renoir's struggles to continue painting despite extreme infirmity; but the work of painting seems always, in the sunshine, to be happy. When "the sun was too low, and the shadows were no longer luminous. Then his body got the better of him. His pain would grow sharper....". Jean Renoir notes that his father's last painting was of flowers: "An infection which had developed in his lungs kept him to his room. He asked for his paintbox and brushes, and he painted the anemones which Nenette, our kind-hearted maid, had gone out and gathered for him. For several hours he identified himself with these flowers and forgot his pain." (Renoir, My Father 458) (I agree with the suggestion to play this film at .5 speed, even though this affects the music. The film was probably shot at 16-20 fps, though if the camera was hand-cranked the frame rate would vary. ) Thanks for sharing.

yes, it's hard to imagine continuing to paint with such arthritis but then he had i guess the courage to think 'what else i there to do but go on'
i suspect it is an oil given the way he is applying the paint?
and it would be interesting to have a lip reader of French to be able to reveal what they are talking about, don't you think?

hi Nathan. yes, amazing he could keep painting at all. and so great seeing him at work, creating paintings that we now see as masterpieces, influential and iconic.

I don't quite remember this recorded scene. But if given a choice, I would bypass the arthritis part. That was excruciatingly painful... no fun at all. I do have the left eye twitch and some remnants of the arthritis right hand and right hip. I am also an artist now and have "practiced" replicating "woman reading" easy to do. My home has many prints of my paintings. One of my favorites is "luncheon at the boating party" and "two sisters (On the Terrace)" has special meaning to me. But my all time favorite is "Dance at Bougival". An interesting record of my journey.

I'm obsessed with the Impressionists and any rare live footage is fantastic, Monet footage is great too. Amazing thing about Renoir is his son went on to be a celebrated film maker as well, 2 greats in different mediums.

i'm fascinated by the Impressionists too - and would hate t think how long i can sit in front of a Monet waterlily painting in London!
very interesting how people can be at the top of two professions - Robert Helpmann used to perform a lead role at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stafford in the afternoon and then train done to London to perform with Fonteyn at the Royal Ballet!

The man that sat down and is talking to him looks like the same guy who is talking to Monet in your other video of Claude Monet...I love Monet and would love to learn more about Renoir...it looks like he has the same problem with his hands that my friend has and she is always in great pain...thanks for the films...

This is the year he died yet he seems active, alert, focused, talkative and personable. It would be interesting to know what painting he was working on or whether he was going through the motions for the film. Too bad film had no sound.
yes, with the Claude Monet footage you can see the painting, here not. recorded not long before sound came in in film. it could have just been staged for the camera - i suspect it was.

+Richard Peninger yes, counter-intuitive - i lived in Paris as a kid and restaurants back then were often filled with smoke - a diferent time and attitude about smoking.

Yes, in his later years, his Arthritis was so bad, so painful, he was confined to a wheel chair and his wife or someone had to assist him with putting brushes etc in his now deformed hands. You can cripple the body, but you can't stop the drive to create.
