Border is a 1997 Indian Hindi-language epic war film written, produced and directed by J. P. Dutta. This film is adapted, dramatised and fictionalized for the screen from a true happening during the Indo-Pak war of 1971 called the “Battle of Longewala”. One long night, 120 Indian soldiers successfully defended their base in Longewalla against the vast Pakistan infantry and tanks. Border recreates that night of tragedy and valour. Border was Dutta's dream project. Screenplay and execution of it done brilliantly by the director. He not only captured the essence of war but also paid homage to the indomitable spirit of the Indian armed forces.
The film opens before the declaration of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. At Indian Air Force Base western sector in May 1971, we see the flying practice by Wing Commander Andy Bajwa played by Jackie Shroff with dashing, confident and convincing performance. He is briefed by his superiors that he and his squadron need to move to the Jaisalmer and create the new air base there. He should take command of Hunter Squadren which are ground attack aircrafts to support the Indian Army.
23rd Battalion, The Punjab Regiment, North-Easternn sector with 2 JCO and 32 OR Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri played by Sunny Deol as surdar with a powerful voice and performance. Here he received the order that his company will go to Rajasthan on advance post. Kuldip’s wife Preeti played by Tabu called her dad and request him to stop the transfer of Kuldip because of war but Kuldip warns her dad that if you did what she told you then I will divorce her. Later the conversation happens between Kuldip and Preeti where Preeti said: Remember you had taken Dipu’s (their son) oath that you will never leave me. Kuldip said: I did. Don’t forget that I had taken an oath while taking commission in the Army. I had done it even when I was born on this soil where I grew up and I had taken an oath on those Himalayas too which has been protecting my country for 5000 years. I had also taken an oath on those 50 crores siblings who have been born on this soil just like me. Your Kuldip can anytime sacrifice his child for them. This one scene is enough to know how he thinks, his commitment towards duty and patriotism. And superb dialogues full of emotions and patriotism, we can see this kind of dialogues threw out the film written by Director’s father O. P. Dutta.
