- A tutorial on how to dye shoes, boots and any synthetic leather or suede material using acrylic paint. I can not stress enough that you are staining not painting the material, so make sure your paint is watered down and DO NOT use a paint brush to apply to leather as it will leave brush strokes. It will take a few coats to get proper color saturation so just be patient with it and let every coat dry fully before applying the next about 24 hours. and again do not use this method on real leather or suede as it will ruin it. Any questions please feel free to ask :)
I did this to my suede stilettos, they looked a little weird at first but I used fine sandpaper to rub it back to smooth and they look awesome now!
How did the painted boots last over time? Did it run when wet! wear off? Chip? Thanks!
The suede looks matted and shiny in the video. Great idea using sandpaper to fluff the material.
This worked great.
I had white children's dress shoes that needed to be cream. I used two coats of cream then added a coat of steeped tea for the right color and that worked over the acrylic paint great too.
Thanks!
thank you so much for this ! watched many videos and this is the only one which actually gave me a solution ! so good to be able to do it without having to spend crazy money on dye and stuff !
I bought some sandals at Payless no less! apx. 3 yrs. ago - really unique so bought beige and grey. Wore them so much the beige ones were looking really awful. I have a bunch of these acrylic paints, some matte, satin & gloss from Michael's for different projects.. I'm so impatient I just grabbed the bronze colour and (no water) just used a brush to paint them.. Perfection!
Zoe How did the painted boots last over time? Did it run when wet! wear off? Chip? Thanks!
Thanx! I just bought some white faux leather Lugz because they didn't have black ones in my size. I already have acrylic paint. I'm definitely going to use this technique.
This worked perfectly and I didn't have to spend any money as I already had acrylic paint in the house
I dyed a real leather jacket years ago with watered down paint and it turned out beautiful
Great video I read the same thing about synthetics and I panicked, so will definitely be trying this!
thank you so much. I am an aspiring designer and I really needed to learn how to die synthetic leather because I am Vegan and I would like to design clothes and I finally learned thanks to you. :)
This is a great video! Cant wait to try this!
Thanks! This helped a lot, now I can finish my costume :)
regular acrylic paint isn't water-based, so even though it was thinned with some water to apply it to the boots, she might have actually made the shoes a little water resistant now.
This was very helpful and the best I've seen! Thank you
Thank you so much for doing this! It was really helpful
This was extremely helpful thank you! :D
Thank-you can't wait to try this with pink
This worked like a charm, but I had to do about 5 coats to get it dark enough to pass as black leathet. Thanks for this video
Did it stay after the time?
Great video! I also found shoes for my costume but they arent the right color. This is super helpful :D
Exactly what I needed! (Except from mine is black to cream) thanks!!!!
Great tutorial! I'm going to try my purse straps. I want to darken them. Thanks💞
you are a genius! tank you so much!
Thank you so much for this!! U saved me and some shoes!!!! ;)
would love an update if the paint is still going strong after all this time
Kiralee would be good enough for a costume as she said. But for sure would not hold up for every day use. This isn't actually dying it is painting, and paint is only a top coat. Depending on the material of the faux leather, there are dyes that may absorb into the material and make it permanent
@@aaronsecosystems7941 how to make it permanent? What kind of dye?
@@ediblelipstick109 use a water resistant sealer
joy luist use angelus
joy luist Angelus leather paint and finisher, or Angelus Suède dye and finisher. When using on canvas or fabric add Angelus 2-Soft or Gac-900 these work also when painting on denim, cotton and other textiles when mixed with your acrylic paint.
Perfect, thank you! ❤
I've bought some black faux suede thigh high boots and was thinking of colouring them teal/turquoise as the character I'm cosplaying has teal/turquoise boots. Would spraying them or using the wet paint be a better soulution?
This was so helpful, thanks!! I will be dying a pair of sandals for a costume. Just a question - I need to get a somewhat dark burgundy color for mine. Would it be better to start out with a neutral tan color or black? Those are the only options for the shoes I think would work best, but it seems like trying to dye black shoes a redish color wouldn't work. What would your suggestion be? Thanks so much!
will it work on the heel if I wanted to cover that brown on my heels? My heels are the same material as yours. Thank you.
I have used vinegaroon on reall leather with amazing results. However, I have some synthetic leather that I will try this technique on. Thanks!
oh my you just saved me a ton of money. I really dislike discolored shoes they look so shabby. Thanks
I'm definitely going to try this out! I have a pleather jacket that I tried to just paint straight on top of and the paint is chipping off, so hopefully this will work.
Hi...did you try this? it worked? I have a faux black leather jacket with some spots chippin off too
I'm planning to cosplay as Emma Swan from Once Upon a Time but the boots I ordered aren't the same color that Jennifer Morrison wears on the show.
I have some pu leather / suede planners but they're all darker colors and I want to make them lighter colors would I need to do a white wash first?
if I want to draw a pattern on the leather, would it work? lets say I have a white leather and want to dye just a one color figure, red, on it, would it work by using duct tape to draw the area and applying the red paint?
Do you think you could dye white faux leather pink with this method? I'm trying to make a costume and I expected the sleeves of the jacket I bought to be a material I could easily dye but it turned out to be pleather and I'm just trying to work with what I have as I don't have much time or money.
I have a thin suede material trench coat(Vanilla colour) I wanted to dye it to Midnight Blue.Does it work with Acrylics paint like U do?
Welp! I am going to try this on a pair of knee highs I just got but I have a question;
The boots I got are flexible and bendy but feel like leather (they are fake) and are a little cracked/worn, I was wondering if this method would still work? Sorry to rush you but I need them black by three days so if you can reply that would be great!
I have a light pink faux leather skirt that the color got a little messed up on BC of a pair of jeans in the wash, would this work for it? it would it like crinkle and flake off? could I still wash it?
Thanks for the info! worked perfectly on my shoes!
So I bought some cheap black fake leather pumps from a thrift store and for my costume I need them to be a dark blue. Will this method work and if not, what could I try?
Thanks. Exactly what I needed to know. You've done the research for me. :)
Do you have to re-apply after rain? Anyone know if you need to seal them then?
Hi thanks for this tutorial Will this work with a nude/blush suede heels to black and how many coats ?
so light brown to black would work awesome. :3
Hi!
I was wondering is this method changes the texture of the fabric at all
wil ll this work on the edges of my couch.. its synthetic leather 🤔
i'm trying to make burgundy suede sneakers a shade darker... Would brown paint work?
Thanks for this. I need to touch up some faux leather dinning chairs and i have not been able to find anywhere where i can buy dye for this. I will try this when i have got some time to mix and match the colour i need x
hazel brown hey quick question, how did it work? i’m about to try this on dinning chairs as well and i’m curious
I'm thinking of doing this for some boots I wanna wear in a couple weeks! Being a water-based paint, will it seep off in the rain? Can you seal it with some kind of water repellent?
What should I use to dye or paint timberland boots
Does the paint wear off the zipper at all once you start wearing them?
Any advice about dying a black synthetic leather jacket to a dark red?
I wanna dye a faux leather jacket from red to brown. will this work?
Great video! :) Does anyone know what will happen to these shoes in rain??
I will assume that you will seal the paint with a clear shoe polish on the synthetic leather??
I am going to do it on a thrift store flat wallet. I have sanded, painted and sprayed /paintbrush coated with polyurethane or wood varnish. I PREFER TO paint on the seal after of course from the beginning covering hinges and screws, fasteners with masking /paint tape.
Love the Bob Ross fan brush
That is literally a Bob Ross paint brush
Would black work on a bright orange bag please ?
How long does it take to dry? Can you use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time? TIA!
Would it work from brown to gray? I want to dye my bomber jacket
How long do you wait between coats of black paint?
will this work on black waterproof timberland boots
The one that l use is wash off when water pour onto it what solution to it
Thank you so much, it's been really helpful. I'll try it right now!
Does this work on Under Armour ClutchFit Drive?
Thank you!!
Did this ruin the grain of the faux seude BTW?
does this method work on black boots that need to be lighter? I have black boots that need to be hot pink... I would think more layers would work but I wanna know if anyone tried yet
hi what if i wanna dye a tan faux suede peep toe bootie white?
If you have to wash your boots will it come off?
Could I do this to a neoprine material?
I’m trying to dye a faux leather basque would this work ?
I have an old Coach tote that's patent leather and it looks horrible. Color transfer, worn off color and tons of black marks that look as though someone skidded across it with an 18 wheeler. My question, has anyone tried this technique on patent leather and what were the results? The tote is trash anyway so I'd love to experiment on it ;-)
Thanks!!
will this work on motorcycle race boots?
Just thinking.........I wonder what you'd use to paint wedge sandals that are made of a canvas type material - can't see any videos on this. Any suggestions?? Like I said I get impatient and decide to do things sometimes at 3 a.m.! I like the shoes, but am not "in love" with them so maybe I should paint them tonight?? lol.
Did U ever do it?
How long do you leave it on I'm wanting to do a belt
Any ideas on how to turn royal blue into plum? 😅
Does this method work on synthetic patent leather?
How do you protect the buckle?
hey is it okay to use poster colour?
Will the paint eventually start to peel?
This is fantastic! I'm thinking about doing this for a synthetic leather bomber jacket. Not sure if it'll work the same, but I guess I'll find out! Is this waterproof, or does it run when it gets wet?
Hi, did you try it with the jacket? it worked?? I have one that is chipped in some parts and I'm wondering if this method will make look good again
Could I paint my nike sneakers with acrylic paint?
Hi! I’ve been looking around for a tutorial on how to dye faux suede for months. So happy to finally have found this! I’m going to dye a pair of thigh high boots. The material is quite thin, not thick like the boots in the video. What I’m scared of is for the acrylic paint to bleed through the fabric and onto my socks, etc. have you experienced this?
These boots are years old now and I didnt experience any bleeding through and once its dry it should be fine but I cannot guarantee it as mine were thick. If it were me I would try it then wear them for awhile to see you can always were thigh thighs under to protect your skin but I think it should be fin.
Try using scotchguard as a "sealer" if your fabric is compatible with doing such. If it's not, look into mod podge waterproof sealer or other fabric compatible sealers.
Actually I need to turn suede into leather, is it possible?
and how long does it take to dry?
Heyy I need to dye the bottom of my shoes can this work ?
Is the paint washed way when wet
Wonder if I could do this for sailor senshi cosplays.
I'm trying this for alois boots XD
Thank you
In your opinion, would this work for PU fake leather pants? Thank you so much for making this tutorial, it's going to help me update soo much of my closet
Chocolatetresses dyed a pu jacket with a Fit the kit and it worked
@@andreat.8078 Could you link what you used to dye it? And how did it turn out??
So you’re saying it’s easier to go from a darker color to a lighter color?
Can I dry it with a hair dryer?
Great idea. Thanks for sharing. Have you ever tried this method from black to a lighter color? I have black lace on gray boots and I need green for my costume. Any thoughts?
Thanks!!
yes I'm getting medium brown ones, but I need them to be any ivory/tan color!!
I have never tried to go lighter it may work but may need more coats
How did it hold up?
Can i paint taupe boots lighter?
Can this paint also work on fake "leather" jacket? I bought this jacket years ago & the fake leather is peeling off. How do I put it back or make it look like it did when first bought? Id never buy real leather because its worthless compared to the animals suffering. It is never worth the money no matter how much selfish impulses kick in. Also is there such thing as fake nubuck? If you dont know what it is plz look it up. I want this boots that say it contains fake nubuck but im hesitant because im a cruelty-free shopper.
Would using a painting sponge be an okay substitute for the washrag?
I don't think so. It's better to use a cloth or old rag.
How long does this take to dry
thanks for sharing
Hello my question is can I use my hobby spray painter and once the paint/dye is dry is it wise to use a sealer to protect the shoes
Jeff what kind of sealer?
i bought a mudd kenny tote from kohls (not that its that important just for reference) and its faux leather and i was wondering if this method would work and if someone could tell me if it did and what they sealed it with, because this is super helpful
brennabelkonen Americana Multi Surface paint, found right with the Plaid brand used in this video, is under $2 a bottle and includes a primer and sealer in the formula, so it will seal up for you on its own. Otherwise, I'd prob use polyurethane bc that's my jam.
Will this method work well for bendable garments such as a glove? I am attempting to make a replica of Michael Jackson's original glove which was made with a cream colored golf glove which is difficult to find so I figured I could dye a white glove.
