Η περιοχή αναφέρεται και είναι γνωστή από τα μεσαιωνικά χρόνια με την ονομασία Alechimmo, στο στενό της Λευκίμμης είχε διεξαχθεί η περίφημη ναυμαχία μεταξύ των Κορινθίων και Αθηναίων κατά τον Πελοποννησιακό πόλεμο. Σε αντίθεση με την υπόλοιπη Κέρκυρα, δεν είναι ορεινή, έχει χαμηλούς λόφους με ελιές, και στα πεδινά καλλιεργούνται εσπεριδοειδή και αμπελώνες με κρασί γνωστό στην Κέρκυρα.Υπάρχει η ομώνυμη κωμόπολη της Λευκίμμης, άλλως καλούμενη Πεντάχωρο, ένας εκτεταμένος ενιαίος οικιστικός ιστός αποτελούμενος από πέντε χωριά: τις Ριγγλάδες, τις Αναπλάδες, τους Αγίους Θεοδώρους, το Ποτάμι και τα Μελίκια.Η Λευκίμμη διαθέτει λιμάνι που εξυπηρετεί πολύ κόσμο και συνδέεται με το λιμάνι της Ηγουμενίτσας.
The area is referred to and known since medieval times under the name Alechimmo, in the Strait of Lefkimmi the famous naval battle between the Corinthians and the Athenians took place during the Peloponnesian War. Unlike the rest of Corfu, it is not mountainous, it has low hills with olive trees, and in the plains are cultivated citrus fruits and vineyards with wine known in Corfu. There is the homonymous town of Lefkimmi, otherwise called Pentachoro, an extensive single residential network consisting of five villages : Ringlades, Anaplades, Agioi Theodorou, Potami and Melikia. Lefkimmi has a port that serves a lot of people and is connected to the port of Igoumenitsa.
