  • This video is compares two experimental rocket test flights: the McDonnell Douglas DC-X from 1995 and the SpaceX Starship SN8 from 2020. The resemblance is uncanny.

McDonnell Douglas must be kicking themselves . .

For some reason, the team that was choosing which project to go forward with chose the Lockheed Venture Star, which never even got as far as a finished test vehicle.

@@jmcenanly1 A Wikipedia article on DC-X suggests that NASA had worked more closely in the development of Venture Star and felt a connection to the project -- and felt shamed by the success of DC-X. So, maybe a bad blood situation resulted in the choice of Venture Star?

Fun note: DC-X was ofc the subscale version of the actual vehicle called DC-Y/DC-1, which is actually just similar in size to the Starship itself

To my understanding the DC-X never flew by aerodynamics only.

      Not even Starship.
She performs a controlled fall, the little wings only act as differential movement aerodynamic brakes to stabilize the fall but do not generate lift.

@@cattiviktgeniodelmale3423 still that is only controlled by aerodynamic surfaces. DC-X never shut down all it's engines during flight

It doesn't count with engines on. It's belly flop then.
