    Spoke with Lyle at C&S Corvette who was gracious enough to walk me through the problem....AND IT WORKED. I manually elevated the headlight and will order a rebuild kit as well as visors for my C5. Happy, happy....joy, joy.

    Of all the videos I've watched on this you're the only one that has explained why the plastic coat everyone says use brass which is why I bought them however I'm going to reorder the plastic one because that makes total sense. So much more Than saving a dollar like everyone else says is the reason they used plastic thank you

    Thanks a bunch Lyle. Mine are still work but I was thinking brass gear when replacement time came. You saved me from screwing up again.

    Doesn't the Headlight Control Module shut off the motor based on increased current draw? i.e. The headlight opens/closes until it hits the mechanical resistance of the assembly (or some obstruction), this resistance translates to the motor via the gear+wormdrive and this increases the current draw from the motor, triggering the shutoff?
    If this is the case, why would it be dangerous to have the brass gear in place? If it gets caught, wouldn't the motor shut off the same way it does every time it's used? I believe this is the principle used by many low-rise/sleepy-eye headlight kits for the C5.
    Totally understand sacrificial parts! Just curious why the motor would keep running in the brass gear scenario you mention, and if that's the case, how the control module knows to shut off with standard up/down use and why it keeps running when the gear strips out.

    I believe those are the same ones in the kit I put in my C3 (video on my channel ;). They work great!

    What could possibly keep the headlight from raising that you would need a breakable gear? I used a metal one when the plastic gear's teeth broke and never thought that it would be a issue. Ice, maybe? Don't get me wrong, Corvette engineers know more about it than anyone and that was their choice so it has to be right. I got to say, you got me on this one. Thanks for the video.

      @johnwilson668 Před 3 lety +1

      I guess if you turn your headlights on while a girl is sitting on them it could be an issue. Other than that I can't think of any other reason for them to use a cheap plastic gear except for cutting production costs. If they saved $5 per headlight going with plastic gears it really adds up. Lol

      It can happen! Im in the middle of a nightmare led upgrade on my C5. Raised hood, raised lights, installed led bulbs fr Amazon. Then i i attempted to lower my pop up lights... the control arm that raises the pop up light assembly, snagged on the body of the bulb where the fan is housed 9005 high beam led bulb was listed as compatible in same style by multiple brands... now I am watching gear replacement videos!

    Good video. A similar video for C4s would be nice. I have an 85 and an 88 so I have to deal with both C4 headlight motor designs. I think there were a few wiring changes within the 88-96 style

    Hahaha..Guess I will have an issue at some point cuz I replaced the gears in my 2001 with brass ones 2 years ago. Not sure what glue I used but I clamped it back together for 4 or 5 hours before reinstalling. I haven't had a issue since. Funny, this is the first time I have ever heard that plastic gear should be used rather than brass. Makes sense, tho.

    Hi Lyle, thanks for another great video!
    Question: Can the 97-99 motor be retrofitted on the 00-04 C5s? And is it worth doing it?

  • @johnsmithth3318
    @johnsmithth3318 Před 2 lety

    Yeah I've got to replace the right side. I was going to replace with the brass one until seeing your video, thanks. Should I replace both sides?

    • @csvette
      @csvette  Před 2 lety

      While you are in the one unit and have all the tools out and everything fresh in your mind, I highly recommend doing the other one. Saves you time and effort in the long run. Lyle

    Can't get the passenger-side headlight to come up manually on my 2001 C5. Was told the headlight motor needs to be replaced. My thought is that end-cap that glues on the motor popped off after I replaced the motor gear a couple of months ago. Ideas?

    • @BouldersBloom
      @BouldersBloom Před rokem

      I imagine you solved this, but you can use a square drive drill bit of the correct size to turn the motors manually if the (ridiculous) plastic manual actuator has broken. This works on the 01-04 and likely 97-00.

    Lyle, what do you think about the LMC5 Steering column lock module for the 97-04 C5? On my 02 z06 I had to connect the brown wire plus the other wires to get mine to work.

    • @csvette
      @csvette  Před 3 lety

      The brown wire addition is common for the early cars--rarer on the 01 and up cars. I have had very good luck with both the unit and the company in terms of support. Lyle

    I plan on changing my headlight bulbs on my 2001 C5. The problem I have is I can't figure out how to adjust the beams so they shine further out in front of the car.

    • @csvette
      @csvette  Před 3 lety +1

      Both the Vertical and Horizontal adjustment fittings are accessible through the pop-off cap on the inboard side of the black headlight bezel. that is how you adjust the beams upward to shine out further. Lyle

      @@csvette Thanks. I figured it out. Sacrificed some knuckle skin but it all worked out. Still looking for a good Corvette shop in the north east FL area. Most shops have no clue what they are doing. Thanks again.

    Is headlight "shake" in 1 hadlight on 2002 related to this issue? Or is it caused by something else? Thank you Lyle

    • @hummer3524
      @hummer3524 Před 3 lety +1

      My 03 has driver side shake, it is from one of the slide brackets worn out. Headligjt has a little play in it when they up which causes it to shake.Some of the corvettes forums have a fix for but I have just lived with it since I don't drive a lot at night.

      You really can't. Small differences in the headlight assembly itself between 99 and 00 make it impossible. Lyle
