  • The 'Little' Fugue in G minor, performed by Dorien Schouten for All of Bach, is found in many copies from Bach’s day. Around 100 years after his death, it was published no fewer than four times in rapid succession. Bach’s pupil Johann Georg Schübler thought the theme was so successful that he made a fugue out of it himself. So it was an immensely popular piece. It is not surprising, as the music is bursting with enjoyment. It conjures up a picture of Bach writing enthusiastically and enjoying his own theme while composing. It’s as though he can’t get enough of it, as it is a relatively long time before the second entrance appears.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on October 1st 2015 at the Bovenkerk, Kampen. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

This is so far the most articulate expression of Bach's fugue in g minor I feel I have heard. So much going on in any of Bach's work but often musicians sound as if they are battling instead of dancing in their heart playing this music. Thank you for your dedication to this excellent performance. You have brought out the magnificent nuances which often are muddy and lost in so many other performances of this music.

What a beautiful performance of this magnificent piece. I love that you can follow each voice at all times and yet hear how they blend to form the harmonies and meta-themes. It is the perfect performance for learning about this music, which is what I did (I’ve listened a dozen or more times, mostly with sheet music in hand). Beyond that, this performance shows the dark grandeur that most organists bring out yet goes beyond and shows Bach’s pure joy that some interpretations miss. Bravo.
