  • In this video, I head over to RideNow Powersports in Austin, Texas to test ride BMW's Baggers, the R18 B and the K1600 B. Unfortunately my audio cable dislodged from the GoPro, so the audio is crap. I had to do a voice over to share my thoughts about the two bikes. Thanks to Nick, BMW sales and Steve BMW regional rep for organizing.

I've had my R18 Bagger for nearly two years now. The only negative comments come, at least in my experience, from Harley riders who have never ridden the BMW. I've ridden both, and I realy don't have anything negative to say about Harley. They look good, depending on the model, and I love all the customization possibilities they bring with them. Would I swap my BMWfor one? Absolutely no way. If I had wanted to be one of millions of others, I'd have bought a Harley. If I wanted to buy an overpriced bike, I'd have bought a Harley. I want to be different and the BMW is a powerful eyecatcher with heaps of power in Rock Mode and comfortable to ride. Ok, the Marshal sound system is good but I never use it. I also rode the K1600 Bagger two weeks ago whilst mine was in for a service. had it for two days. Great bike, very comfortable and fast. I wouldn't swap my R18 for it either. The vibration on the R18 is a bummer sometimes, but you get used to it. The K1600 is smooth as silk, as you mentioned. I live in Germany and had it over 190 kph (approx 118 mph) on the Autobahn and didn't even realise until I looked down at the speedo. Had crash bars, front and rear fitted to my R18, as well as a luggage rack and sissybar. Looking for a set of spots for the front crash bars but BMW say the like are not available for the bike, something to do with its Can Buss system.

Thank you for checking out the video and sharing your expert insights. I loved riding the K1600, but I would most likely buy the R18 for the same reasons you mentioned. It is fun and has character. I also like Harley’s and probably the only one I would buy is the Breakout because it looks cool and not everyone has one. Street Glides and Road Glides are all over the place especially here in Texas. You really have to spend a lot on third party after market stuff to even begin to make yours unique. Too expensive!!!

No No No, thank you for organizing the test ride. That R18 Bagger is a solid bike and for the price / incentives should be reviewed by more people looking at the category. It's an amazing cruiser / bagger!

That was such an awesome test ride demo there. I did enjoyed watching you accelerating and picking up the speed on each of R18B and K1600B. I do also agree with you the K1600B as preferable as for a long distant ride and sport tour styling. I can't imagine how smooth and quiet the 6 inline cylinders on the K1600. I used to ride on a K1200RS (4 inline cylinders). It ran very smooth. I do now enjoy riding my new R1250RS and I love it. If you can test ride a K1600GTL, would be nice to see the comparison between K1600GTL and K1600B. Cheers!

ThNk you for watching and commenting. It was fun testing those for sure. I wish I could test bikes every week. Unfortunately it’s not easy to test ride bikes outside of these organized test ride events. Next I’m going to try testing a Harley Street Glide to see what the R18 B competition is like to ride. I love my RS and glad to hear you are enjoying yours too. Such an amazing bike. I don’t really understand why more people don’t buy them.

Great review and very informative. That K1600 power is pretty impressive!

Thanks for checking the video out. It was a lot of fun trying them out. The R18 B really surprised me. All the negative press was dispelled. I could definitely see myself cruising around on one of those. Next I need to setup a test ride on a Street Glide.

The K1600 you are riding isn’t a Baggar! It’s called the Grand America. It’s the Baggar with a top box. As a result, it’s restricted to 102mph! Enjoyed you’re review, they are two amazing, yet different bikes!

Nice catch. Thanks for watching and commenting. Actually the demo day was a special test ride of BMW’s two baggers. Unfortunately at that time, they didn’t have a k1600B available, so had to run with the top case, which didn’t impact the test much as the roads we were on restricted us to about 65mph or less. It was a fun day checking out those bikes.

Nicely done. I have a R1250RS which I love. By far my favorite bike. I’m buying the R18B tomorrow to add to it so my wife can ride with me. She isn’t comfortable with the RS pillion.
As an added note. I did the Bren tune and air intake kit on the RS and it really helped the bike and the shifter catch. Highly recommended.

Thanks for tuning in and commenting. I’m considering new headers and a tune in the future. I don’t ride 2up, but I can imagine the RS wouldn’t be comfy for a passenger on more than an hour ride. I really enjoyed the R18B only down side would be no backrest for your wife unless you are getting something after market. Anyway, congratulations on the new purchase. Enjoy!

The k1600 is nice but I notice with the top case at hwy speeds the wind pushes against your back pushing you forward....didn't care for that and also the k1600 wasn't a B model that you were on...I also didn't like how it's limited but a b.t. tune takes care of that

Negative Harley Rider press.. LOL - but at 6’3” the seating position is not ideal and leg cramping and knee position not ideal. I have an order in for a K1600GA with a tall seat option and forged bars. Hoping it will be better… nothing is as comfortable as the R1200GS, but it is a tall bike and a pillion on the back has to do some climbing to get on.

Thank you for checking out the video and commenting. I have a friend that’s about the same height as you and he told me that R18 is ridiculously uncomfortable for him to sit on let alone ride. Good luck with your K1600 that bike is so smooth.

6’5” First Edition here and no problems (+20mm factory seat height option & floor boards) - 50yo, fit and active, but carrying some old sporting knee injuries. I really don’t get the discomfort reports, other than thinking those riders who are used to forward controlled v-twin machines can’t process the initial alien feeling of mid-controls ?
The sheer number of comments like “a CrUiSer MUST hAve FoRWarD CoNTRols” indicates to me that it’s more of a mental barrier than a physical one.
