I'm still trying to get used to my new video camera and I keep experimenting with its settings. I have no idea how cameras work because all I do is point them at me and then press record. However, I really like the wide angle view of this camera which captures the entire guitar and both my hands. In this video, I just ran through an old piece titled Matud Nila (translated as: They Say) by Wenceslao "Ben" Zubiri (September 28, 1911 - November 9, 1969). I must have played it a million times already, so it took me 15 minutes to read the entire piece and was able to play it right away. That's the advantage of being able to read notes (standard notation, not just tablature).
"Matud Nila" is a classic Kundiman from the Visayan region of the Philippines. Kundiman is the Filipino term of romantic songs. These songs are used to serenade women as part of the phases of Traditional Filipino courtship. Traditional courtship may also include writing of love letter for the woman which is usually given through his trusted friend. It is a very beautiful song about a man, pleading for love from his beloved. It is part of the Filipino culture for woman to consider the opinion of her family and relatives before deciding to be in a relationship with a man. This is a very sad song about a man's expression of love and hope despite the suffering of being deemed unworthy by the people around them. The song ends with a message that he will keep on yearning for her love with the hope that his beloved will not be persuaded by the prejudice of others.
