  • Here is a video I captured on a maintenance visit to St. Micheal's Church in Charleston, SC. So many were so eager to comment on the other video that I uploaded a couple years ago about how "squeaky" the clock was.......well that was before I became the caretaker.
Well I have been the caretaker of the clock for 2 years now and it is doing great, all the squeaks are gone, and she is running smoothly and on less weight. The clergy at the church said "it is running like a digital watch", so that was a very nice compliment, especially since this clock is approaching the 250 mark.
I repaired the Quarter chime levers last fall 10' and it now sounds out the tune correctly. The lowest note (the 4th note in the chime sequence) lift lever had been misaligned for many years so it had not been chiming correctly the last 30 years or so.
Well it is all back up and running great and just wanted to show her off.
There are several "wear areas" that we are going to work on in a mechanical restoration over the next couple of years, but even with some issues she is running strong! Enjoy

The best part of the video is at @1:28 when the gears and flywheel for the large bell clapper spring into motion. You can just sense the power of the mechanism at work.

It's the second or third time I see a chair in front of a tower clock hahaha. Maybe the owner likes to sit there watching time pass? I'd definitely enjoy doing that, the sound is so awesome and calming at the same time

    Hey Man,
We had an awesome time in Charleston as always, and we of course spent a few hours up in the Church steeple me working while my wife tried out our new camera.
I have cleaned up the movement a lot, so glad it looks better. And I think I'm going to have the C-clamp plated for CJ when the restoration takes place, its almost a permanent fixture.
Yeah I found out "The St. Michael's Chime" was played on the carillon not the clock, only us clock guys realize the difference.
    Thanks

Even before I read the comments my favorite part was...
Yup, the 2x4's with the C-clamp holding the pallet fork in place. Now that's a C-clamp :)
You're obviously a man who knows how to see what it takes and follow through with innovation. You said you want to have it plated? haha, I would think pearlized is in order myself. Beautiful work.

It is the St. Michaels chime. It actually is the same chime as the old London Exchange clock, and when I say the old one, I mean before Westminster Chime (Big Ben) days. The famous St. Michael's clock chime was named from the cimes that come from the bell ringers in this very steeple, but not from the clock. Most people are a little disappointed when they hear this chime and its not the St. Michael's chime they are accustomed to hearing from their grandfather clock.
    Thanks

Hey Dan. You have that strike train looking and sounding great! It's so different from the St Micheal's chime of a house clock. Did you do anything to the chime rope drum? It looks cleaner. (maybe just the camera angle)
It's fun to see the C clamp still on the verge. (It doesn't seem to be hurting anything). I'm surprised they didn't allow something for fine adjustment of the beat back then other than the single bolt. Hope you and the wife had a good anniversary!

WOW! nice lil gem of a vid! Im doing a extensive research paper into the hstory and development of clock chimes. I found this as i was trying to trace the history of the St Michaels Chime, can you give me as much history as you can on this and why this differs fro the familiar 8 bell sequence. Im guessing that this repeats its 4 bell sequence for each quarter.....once at 1/4 past...twice 1/2 past and so forth. Im tryint to collect as many different chimes from all over the globe and turn it to musical notation with a bit of history. your more than welcome to have a copy (pdf) when im finished

The way these clocks work amuses me! What powers this device? I know things like this have existed in the days before electricity, and it's always been something I've wondered

Like Longcase clocks, and better quality wall clocks, they are weight driven.

It's funny, I just noticed that the lifting/warning fork for the chime in this movement is shaped almost identically to the strike lifting/warning fork in a circa 1930 Ingraham mantel clock I own (although of course it is many times smaller in the latter). Do you think the designers of the Ingraham movement knew of this clock or at least of the maker? It could also be just a big coincidence.

I'm trying to figure out what is powering this clock with no obvious visible cable or rope wrapped around the weight drums. Ghosts?

    • @towerclock1843
      @towerclock1843  Před 6 lety +1

haha! if you watch the very first oft he video, you will see on the 2nd wheel arbor, there is a chain sprocket and chain. That goes does to the autowinder, that the cable and small weights are attached to power the clock.

Yes this clock is nearly 100 years older. This clock was put into service in 1764 and the great clock of Westminster was 1859.

Doesn't really have a name, its a double 3rd or alternating 3rd. It was used at the London Exchange originally so it was copied here on this clock. The clock now at the exchange is of course Westminster. After Big Ben's popularity, this chime basically became non existent.
