- In this DIY auto repair video, young mechanic Aiman will show you how to remove the AC Compressor (with Clutch) for Gen II Honda Insight. Gen 2 or 2nd generation Honda Insight Hybrid IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) Hatchback covers model years 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 & 2014. The process should be similar for the CR-Z as well.

In order to remove the AC compressor, you will need to jack the car up, remove the front passenger side tire, remove the splash guard and the bottom engine shield. The reason for replacing the AC compressor with a new unit (actually we bought a remanufactured part because even after market AC compressor for Honda Insight is very expensive, let alone the genuine OEM one, is because the clutch pulley was wobbly and making noise. First we replace the idler pulley & tensioner, which is the most common cause of failure, but it didn't completely solve the problem. What are common reasons my Honda Insight has air conditioning problems? The most common reasons a Honda Insight ac isn't working are a refrigerant leak, an electrical climate control issue, or a problem with the air conditioning compressor.
Honda Insight:
The Honda Insight is a hybrid electric vehicle that was manufactured and marketed by Honda in its first generation as a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999-2006) and in its second generation as a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009-2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2019-present). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability. EPA estimates for the first-generation Insight were 61 City/70 Highway/65 Combined.
Second generation (ZE2/ZE3; 2010-2014):
The new Insight includes Honda's fifth generation of its Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system. This system mates an internal combustion engine with an electric motor mounted directly to the engine's crankshaft between the engine and transmission.

Good vid. Just to let you know, the vacuum pump is only meant to draw a vacuum in the lines before recharging. You will need a recovery machine to recover any remaining refrigerant unless you want a big fine from the EPA.
Nice video. I liked how you addressed the safety part of disconnecting the battery at the beginning. If possible, can you pin the other videos (belt and reinstallation) for folks who want an easier way to access them?

Hi Aiman - great video ...thank you! how has the RYC compressor worked so far? any issues? Would you recommend this over the OEM?
It's been over a year and a half and still working fine. If you could afford it, OEM is a way to go especially if you're paying someone else to do it. Labor is too expensive it's beyond comprehension. Aftermarket is always hit & miss...
If the air only blows out in the bottom at your feet and hardly anything comes out of the top vents i need to replace the ac actuator?

On my moms 2011 insight does not blow cold i emptied a small can of freon in it and still nothing. Should i replace the ac relay?
I Literally have the same problem. The air only works first thing started up and last almost an hour and after that hot freaking air

Swap out the ac compressor fuse/relay with a new one . That wat i did and got cold air to come out . The part only costs about 10 dollars
