How Does The Honda Ridgeline Tow at MAX CAPACITY?

- The Ridgeline is a great day to day vehicle. It rides smooth on the road, and is easier to live with on a day to day basis than a 1500 series truck... But how well does it tow when you need to tow something that weighs 4,500 to 5,000 lbs?
On a side note - for 2022 I would like to start a build series on my 2010 Camaro SS. It already has headers and a full 3 inch exhaust, but I want take it to there next level with a Cam and some other goodies... We shall see..

Great review. The Ridgeline is an excellent midsize truck; the best midsize IMO. I owned a '08 and absolutely loved it. I currently own a '21 and love it too. They tow my 2500 lbs boat and camping gear very well!
Thank you! I appreciate it! It is for sure a great and reliable midsize truck.
Thanks for doing this. Your testing services is appreciated.
Haha, no problem!
Great video, I just watched it as I was driving my 07 ridgeline with 177,000 miles on it while towing a covered trailer loaded with a mechanical bull setup in it with the total weight being at right about the max of 5k. Pretty much all highway for about an hour and fifteen minutes, with no real issues whatsoever. She definitely worked a bit harder than her normal everyday routine requires, but other than guzzling gas she performed very respectably for a maxed out haul.
Yeah, these little things are more capable than they get credit for. Such a great overall vehicle
I have a 2006 honda ridgeline, almost 400k miles, engine was replaced, original transmission, I towed a 3000 LB pop up camper, no issues at all, but gas milage was too great.
Wow.. Im now at 208k - original motor and trans.. Did you have to top off your oil between oil changes? Im noticing that I have to watch my oil level between changes.. Not sure how much its consuming yet, but keeping an eye out now
I'm at 310K and about to get the timing belt done again
@@703Speed main bearing cap side bolts is common oil leak in Honda Ridgeline 1st Gen, easy fix
@@mocheeks709 Thanks for letting me know
Jack up the front end and shake each tire 12 & 6, 9 & 3 o'clock position. It could be a control arm ball joint or tie rod. If you have moment on any bolts or noise when moving the tire have someone look on the other side to see where it is coming from. Worst case scenario it's your rack and pinion clunking. Whatever you do make sure you use jack stands and wheel chocks as needed. Looking forward to your update.
Thank you for your comment! It is in the shop right now, i get it back Tuesday. I believe it was the strut tower mount. They are also doing the timing belt because of the mileage. I will update you Tuesday when I get the car back
@@703Speed sway bar link?
JB-Weld noise is rack or a strut mount my guess also
When all you got is what you got I respect it
PLEASE Remember....It is not about the trucks ability to "Tow" or pull the trailer. Engines can do it, but you need to worry about the axles, brakes, and the trailer driving you. That is where the accidents happen, when the trailer drives the truck (brakes are under powered for the weight, wind blows and trailer acts like a fin, swerve/turn becomes wobbles you cant recover from because trailer is too long or heavy).
I hate to say I've gone over the tow rating with my '06 before when moving pavers, tile, and lumber before (when I had nothing else because my K1500 was down and out). I'd say the main things where the ridgeline lacks for max towing is engine power, braking, and the macpherson struts make the rear a little soft leading to wag the dog issues over about 40mph. The 6 cylinder is nice, and usually handles the job well enough, but I've definitely hit situations where I've had to drop it to first gear just to get it up a hill. That was with a 1000lb trailer, with 3400lb of lumber, and 1000lbs of pavers in the trailer, and another 1000lbs of pavers in the bed. Even with much smaller loads though, the rear struts tend to be really soft.
Now for the ridgeline bragging bit... They handle the mud and sand really well. I've even pulled an F250 4x4 out of the mud with it, and driven up muddy hills where other trucks couldn't get the traction to make it up. They are great vehicles.
I have a 13, favorite part of these trucks is the engine doesn't care if its revving high, it sits at 4,000rpm with out breaking a sweat.
True! Love the look of the G1.5 exterior wise, as well as the updated gauge cluster.. Does yours leak by chance?
@@703Speed no leaks or issues, except rock chips on the body by the side windows because of how the body work move out from the windows, so a few tiny rust spots that I fix every spring (live in Alberta, winter is a pain on cars here)
Prolly the lil plastic from the steering to the power steering pump those break on every vehicle horrendous sound but then again the suspension could be shot
sounds like your sway bar link.
From listening to a video sounds like a CV joint.

When should I use my D3? I'm pulling a 1982 4 Winn's 180 mercruiser 18 foot boat and yes it's the cuddy cabin style boat
I never used D3 when towing. I guess its personal preference. You can use D3 at all times when towing, or never. Up to you
If you tow your boat regularly, i'd advise pulling the boat tight to the roller. I had a boat the was a bit back end heavy and it would bounce if i didn't get it pulled tight to the roller, after a while it bounces and beats on the bow and can hurt your fiberglass.
Do you push the button on the end of the gear shift to tow basically puts you in Hondas version of tow haul mode keep the tranny from working to hard. I have a 2013 sport 100,000miles and the trucks been flawless we go skiing every weekend I have 2 kids the trunk is so handy load everything up in the trunk and it doesn’t clog up the cabin thanks for the vid
I did not push the button, I just let the car do its thing. It is a very handy little truck
That's what I did with my 07 before I got the 23. It has paddles so you can lock it in an even more precise gear.
The Ridgeline has a transmission cooler so that's always a good thing
Mine is a 06 and have 262.000 miles and still runs like new. Now I know I can tow a small camper with no issue lol, quick question...does your navigation quit working as well? My unit under the seat is shot and honda wants....hold your breath....$4k for a new navigation unit and said screw that lol and my hood latch broke as well, I just use a needle nose to pull it open lol
My Nav still works.. *knock on wood*. I had an issue with setting the clock for a few months - it wouldn’t let me change the time. It fixed itself tho lol. My hood latch also broke last winter. I got it replaced. Other than that she runs well. 210k on the clock now. She does consume a little oil between oil changes.. does yours as well?
Was it the cv joints ?
Did well pulling it. As far as acceleration, you weren’t even really getting on it, so it wasn’t working terribly hard.
Honestly, if I were towing that type of weight often, it would probably not be in a midsize. You don’t see many trucks pulling that sort of weight anyway.
Always liked the Gen 1. Currently have a 2021 with the 9 speed. Getting ready to move 5,000lbs worth of car on a U-Haul and may film it too since everyone says they can’t tow anything.
Yeah true, it did do pretty well. Just had the timing belt replaced after this video and have noticed it has a lot more of its power low end again, so it cruises a lot better now than it did believe the belt was replaced(for the second time). Very true, if I was towing this weight often I’d either get a GMC Sierra 6.2 or the 3.5L Ford F-150. I like the Gen 1 too, because it’s unique looking and also very reliable. I also love the G2.5 - the front end looks way better than the G2. I’d be interested to see how your truck pulls with the extra 30 hp u have as well as the 9 speed
@@703Speed never responded. Pulled the full 5,000lbs with no issues over multiple 6% desert mountain grades in AZ summer heat at the speed limit. The extra power and 9 speed made it a non-event. The engine sometimes works hard on big hills, but that is a function of its NA design and doesn’t hurt it.
Is this mileage really that bad compared to others in its class? Serious question.
know this is a long delayed comment but had that same clunking noise! turned out to be a loose strut tower. tightened down and all set!
Similar thing. Got a new strut mount
Common problem, towing wouldn't cause that.
@@kevinredden just kind of interesting that it didn’t happen until after I had towed something
@@703Speed For me it happened, oddly enough after replacing the front sway bar links.
What kinda temps does the engine and transmission have when towing your boat, also what kinda mpg are you getting while towing the trailer on the highway driving!! Also is the rpm gonna be lower when the vehicle is newer like in the 2023..😊😊😊
My car doesn’t show the trans temps. Engine temp towing is exactly what it is without towing
Nice Doggo..
Look at those chem clouds
Lol
Sorry I know this a old video just wondering if this can tow a 2013 civic si coupe ? With a uhaul trailer etc the rear of my car is gutted gross weight stock is like near 3k pounds, if i got a 2012 honda ridgline could it tow me car to the track ?
I have an 06 with 275,000 miles, and im about to pull a polaris rzr 150 miles and up a mountain into west virginia. Wish me luck...
Good luck.. You should be fine. How's your trans holding up? Making any noises?
@703Speed Running beautifully. Never had an issue. I think it will make it fine too, it only worries me a little because I've never pulled anything heavy with it. The truck didn't even have a hitch when I got it, so it had probably never even towed a trailer before I bought it.
@@redsynister4836 Same thing with mine. Now its pulled a jet ski, four wheelers, boats, and its been great. Tranny makes a weird click noise shifting into gear (R or D).. That's happened in the last few thousand miles. Shifts well tho. Idk what's up
No problem, I had a first gen Honda Ridgeline for 13 years pulled 4,000 lb trailer with all my gear all over the United States, never let me down ,waiting for 2024 Ridgeline trail sport I'm going to buy another one.
Do you still have that same Gen 1 Ridgeline?
@@703Speed no I sold it to my neighbor down the road he still has it, runs good, 180,000 miles.
@@mocheeks709 Awesome. What do you drive now?

Hi did you figure out what the cause for the noise? My car is making the same noise. Thans
It was the strut top mount
@@703Speed Thank you
what is the brand of the tire?
Nitto Terra Grappler G2
Don’t you need a 7 pin connector for a trailer brake controller?
This trailer has surge brakes
Ridgeline comes with 7pin connector and is pre wired for a controller
What size camper does this tow?
Not sure. Up to 5k pounds
What tow hitch is on your ridgeline?
Some aftermarket hitch.. Can’t remember

Great boat and truck but boat only weighs 2300lbs maybe 3000 with fuel and gear.
Thank u! Between boat, trailer, fuel, and gear total weight is 4720#’s
@@703Speed great truck and boat. Had a 219 and towed it with my Ridgeline everywhere!
Front end noise is likely stabilizer bushings......it was on my 08'
I always laugh at the term "NART" (Not a real Truck).....My 2008 Honda Ridgeline has a higher bed & tow capacity than the equivalent V6 Toyota Tacoma.....I don't get why haters compare the Ridgeline to V8 Trucks? Seems kinda unfair
